2007 Produttori del Barbaresco "Montefico" Riserva (Pre-Arrival)
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2007 Barbaresco Riserva Montefico is all about energy and sheer power. The Montefico is quite virile, even in this vintage, with a certain austerity in the tannin that will require time in bottle to soften. Dark red fruit, leather, anise and spices are some of the notes that wrap around the insistent, pointed finish. There is plenty of nuance here, but not the early appeal of the year. This is a great showing, but readers will need to be patient. Anticipated maturity: 2017- 2029.
Cherry and strawberry flavors are augmented by mineral and tobacco notes in this intense, harmonious red, which is almost chewy in texture and leaves a mouthcoating essence of sweet fruit on the finish. Combines finesse and power. Best from 2014 through 2026.
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Medium red. Musky aromas of chocolate and mint, with a slightly leafy quality. Sweet but reticent, showing a fine-grained texture but rather medicinal, bound-up flavors. Finishes with a substantial dusting of tannins. The most Barolo-like of these 2007s and in need of patience.
I like the licorice, lemon grass and blackberry aromas to this young red. Full body, with firm tannins and a fresh finish. Turns racy and chewy with a polished texture. Better in 2014.
Wine & Spirits
A transparent red flavor of forest berries is firmly stated even as this wine is more tannic than most of the 2007s from Produttori del Barbaresco. The structure, both in terms of alcohol and tannins, is present through a long finish. This needs bottle age for that structure to mellow.
