The Clos Kalinda 2005 Saint Emilion represents the first private label Bordeaux for us since I have been at K&L (pushing 24 years). This astounds me since one of our two owners, Clyde Beffa, who does all our Bordeaux purchasing and travels to Bordeaux at least six times a year, has been called Mr. Bordeaux by a number of the chateaux owners. In any case, this is a first, and it is a wonderful production for near-term consumption. A blend of Chateau Sansonnet primary label juice and what is used for their second label (young vines), the bouquet is well opened and distinctive, with focused fruit components of black cherry, spicy clove-like tones and hints of toasty oak. This carries over into the mouth to an open and upfront wine with soft tannins, excellent balance and viscosity, wonderful complexity, and a finish that is warm and silky. Anderson says that this will be our house red for the next several years.
