2011 Te Whare Ra (TWR) Chardonnay Marlborough New Zealand
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2011 Chardonnay is scented of white peaches, lemon curd and baking bread with hints of almonds, gingersnaps and orange blossom. Medium to full bodied, there's just a suggestion of oak complimenting the stone fruit and toasty flavors with refreshing acidity, a silken texture and a nice long finish. Drink this one now to 2016. (91+)
Te Whare Ra is a small, organic, family-run winery in Marlborough's Wairau Valley that we loved so much we decided to import them directly! TWR is available in the USA only at K&L Wine Merchants. Jason and Anna Flowerday are the husband and wife winemaking team behind TWR. All of their wines are hand-crafted with love and attention. Only 280 cases of the 2011 Chardonnay was produced from 30+ year old Mendoza clone Chardonnay vines at TWR's Home Block. Grapes were hand picked and gently pressed to top quality French Oak barrels (40% new), and the wine was left on its lees for 11 months. The wine is rich and textural but also bright and energetic. Showing aromas of ripe stone fruits and almond paste, it's got stone fruit flavors as well, with some bright pear notes accenting the ripe, soft core. The oak is very well integrated but adds some nice spicy, toasty notes to the midpalate before TWR's trademark minerality takes center stage in the long and balanced finish. A wine of great quality and purity.
