2009 Miguel Merino Mazuelo de Quinta Cruz Rioja

SKU #1071081 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2009 Mazuelo de la Quinta Cruz is one of Rioja’s rare pure Mazuelos from a single parcel. Aged in American and French Allier oak over eight months, it has a lush bouquet with notes of blueberry, cassis and blood orange. The palate is well-balanced with a fleshy, inviting entry. There are layers of precocious licorice-tinged dark cherry fruit that lead you all the way to the sumptuous finish with exclamation marks of orange chocolate. Drink now-2018. (8/2012)

K&L Notes

We are very pleased to be focusing our Spanish direct import program in Rioja, and most fortunate to have begun working with one of Rioja's most beloved vignerons, Miguel Merino. A longtime participant in the wine business, having sold wine for wine distributors in the States as well as having worked as an export manager, Miguel found success along every step of the way, and then decided that rather than retire, he wanted to fulfill his dream of owning vines and making wine. Based in the Rioja Alta town of Briones, Miguel Merino makes--as he likes to put it--an "updated classic" style of Rioja, all from his own 2 hectares of vines and several hectares of vineyards owned by a close friend. All the fruit is from sloped vineyards (Miguel is a fan of his slopes) within the cooler climate Rioja Alta town of Briones, which makes these wine a terrific showcase of the terroir (especially in a region where wines blended from various villages are more often the norm). This is a truly unique wine, a single vineyard Carignane (Mazuelo in Spanish) from a cool, Atlantic-influenced climate. Bright, nervy and red fruited, this is quite an original single vineyard wine, and if you want to see what Carignane can do on its own, you definitely should check it out. Is one of the very few Mazuelo wines in Rioja, but also one of the rare single-estate brands in the region. This is a direct import for K&L. Joe has found another gem. Great acidity, easy drinking and a nice soft palate. I had it roast lamb. It was perfect.

Additional Information:

- This red grape goes by many names, including Carignane, Carignano, Cariñena, Mazuelo, Moestal, Roussillonen and Samsó, which can make things confusing. A native of northern Spain's Cariñena DO, this grape is also found all over France, particularly in the Languedoc-Roussillon, and is also planted in substantial amounts in Italy and California. A bold, spicy, tannic grape, you'll frequently find Carignan blended with softer, fruitier varieties like Grenache.

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
