Lustau "East India Solera" Sherry

SKU #250001 92 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark This is a selection from botas of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez raised separately and then blended to age for three years in solera. The result puts the sweetness of the PX in front, with flavors of plum jam and tobacco. The salinity of the Oloroso brings freshness and fine minerality that play softly in the background. Inner quote mark (6/2011)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This is a ripe, honeyed style of Sherry with deep brown sugar and cinnamon aromas. Its solid palate is under control and not syrupy, tapering into brown sugar and fig flavors. Chocolate and fig notes linger on the long finish. (MS) Inner quote mark (6/2018)

91 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Full of toffee and caramelized nuts, this sherry is rich and frankly sweet, but it has a lot of character. Rather subtle prune note at the long finish. Inner quote mark (10/2018)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Mid nut brown. Lots of raisiny sweetness on the nose, but much more complexity on the palate, burnt orange and bitter toffee adding freshness to the sweetness. Incredible length. 17.5/20 (JH) Inner quote mark (3/2017)

Lustau is an incredible producer of sherry. The East India Solera harkens back to the day when trading ships would sail around the world with casks of wine and sherry onboard, whose flavors would be influenced by the warm tropical weather on trips to places like the East Indies. Each wine (Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez) is matured separately in its own solera for 12 years. Once blended together, the resulting sherry is returned to barrel for another 3 years ageing. The resulting blend of sherries is just hugely complex. You get the sweetness of the px and the nuttiness and rancio of the oloroso that has so many flavors going on that every time you smell it you pick up different notes. I think this would appeal to lovers of Madeira as well as sherry lovers. The wine is perfect with nuts and aged cheese or just drinking on its own after a meal or an evening nightcap. I also find that it actually improves and gains more funky complexity after being open a few weeks. An excellent wine!
