 The 2008 Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile is now in the market and readers shouldn't miss seeking it out. This is a gorgeously matured dry Riesling classic from Ribeauvillé that drinks perfectly today and pairs with many kind of dishes. The wine has an intense citrus color and opens with a very clear, deep, dense and aromatic bouquet of dried fruits along with herbal and mineral aromas. Full-bodied, pure and elegant, yet complex and mineral on the palate, this is a silky textured but well-structured dry Riesling with intense and persistent fruit, fine tannins and lingering salinity.  A perfumed note of citrus peel and soft pine create a bracing nose that nonetheless suggests ripeness. The body is lithe and light, with a backdrop of stone and subtle nuttiness. With a little more air, the characteristic notes of mature Riesling appear: some lifted chamomile and candied orange peel, but only in their early stages. Concentrated and rich, with strong crushed rock and smoky, flinty nuances complementing nectarine, apple and pear flavors. Trimbach's "Cuvee Frederic Emile" is sourced from the Gaisberg and Osterberg Grand Cru vineyards. Each year it's made it's held back for at least five years before release. This has been sitting in the Trimbach cellars ageing since its bottling in April 2009 and it shows in the incredible complexity and rich aromatics. Powerful and layered, the nose shows notes of dried peaches and apricots, roasted almonds, petrol and wet hay. The palate is bold and round with a savory nuttiness. There's still incredible acidity and the capacity to age further is evident. You could drink this now (because it's delicious) but you could hold this for several more years. An incredibly special bottle of Riesling to add to your collection.

This wine is spectacular! How rare is it to be able to buy a reference point wine that is considered to be one of the greatest wines from a region for under $60? The Trimbach Riesling "Cuvee Frederic Emile" is one of Alsace's greatest wines and the 2008 might be the best rendition yet. This wine is loaded with petrol, iodine and citrus notes with a racy palate of crushed rocks, menthol, nut skin, white grapefruit and saline flavors. The energy here is off the charts with an incredibly long finish that almost vibrates on the palate because of the complexity and acidity that this beauty packs. I have already consumed 3 bottles of this beautiful elixir and intend to buy many more to enjoy over the warm weather days that lie ahead.

Riesling

- While the rest of the world has often misappropriated the name--Welchriesling, Riesling Italico, Gray Riesling and Emerald Riesling are all names applied to varieties that are NOT Riesling--this exceptional German varietal has managed to maintain its identity. Perhaps its biggest claims to fame are its intoxicating perfume, often described as having honeyed stone fruit, herb, apple and citrus notes, and its incredible longevity - the wines lasting for decades. Aged Rieslings often take on a distinctive and alluring Petrol-like aroma. Within Germany, the grape seems to do best in the warming slate soils of the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Other German regions that turn out great Rieslings include Pfalz, Rheingau and Nahe. German Rieslings are made in a range of ripeness levels. The top wines are assigned Pr├Ądikat levels to describe their ripeness at harvest. These are: Kabinett, Sp├Ątlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese. Riesling has also achieved acclaim in France's Alsace, the only region in that country where the grape is officially permitted. Alsatian Rieslings are typically dry and wonderfully aromatic. Austrian Riesling is also steadily gaining praise and fine Riesling is also produced in Italy's Alto-Adige and Friuli, in Slovenia and much of Central and Eastern Europe. In the New World its stronghold is Australia, where it does best in the Eden and Clare Valleys. It is also planted in smaller amounts in New Zealand. In the US, winemakers are eschewing the syrupy sweet versions of the 1970s and 1980s, instead making elegant and balanced wines in both California and Washington State.
