2014 Raul Perez ''Ultreia'' Bierzo

SKU #1347031 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The red 2014 Ultreia is Mencía from various vineyards in the environment of Ponferrada, where the soils are rich in slate, complemented by some 20% of grapes from the zone of Valtuille. It follows the same modus operandi as all the reds: fermentation with full clusters and indigenous yeasts and aging in used, well-seasoned, neutral barrels for one year. There is a mix of floral, spicy and balsamic aromas, subtle with an earthy background. The palate revealed some earthy tannins and fine, focused and subtle flavors

K&L Notes

Raul Perez, born into a vine growing family in the village of Valtuille (El Bierzo), is the single most important winemaking and terroir hunting figure in Spain. This is no overstatement. From Ribeira Sacra to Gredos garnacha, Perez' influence has touched many of the country's top winemakers as well as an important number of more recently emerging D.O regions. El Bierzo always has been home base, however, and there is no more impressive range of wines from this important region, wines which showcase the varying terroirs and vineyard expressions, as that of Raul Perez.
