 The 2013 Perlato del Bosco is a pure Sangiovese from a vineyard located just beyond the property's main house. This is Tua Rita's biggest seller when it comes to the USA market and with good reason. It shows a unique identity with bright berry nuances backed by tangy spice, candied orange peel and blue flower. I'm also told that this is the most difficult wine to make. Sangiovese is a difficult grape to manage and special root stocks (33-19) were selected to delay ripening in order to produce smaller and more flavorful clusters. This in itself is a risky proposition because the chances of bad weather increase the longer you wait before harvest. The wine sees eight months in neutral barrique. The bouquet shows a floral component with rose petal and lavender. In the mouth, it offers amazing potential and fullness. This is an amazing value-buy. (ML)  (1/2017)

 The 2013 Perlato del Bosco is wonderfully finessed in the glass, with silky tannins and expressive aromatics that give the wine its sense of polish. Sweet red berries, mint, cinnamon and wild flowers add nuance on the rich, expansive finish. This is a classic example of Suvereto Sangiovese, where the warm, dry weather yields ample, generous wines. There is plenty to like here. (AG)  (10/2017)

This gorgeous Sangiovese is what enthusiasts look for for under $20 but rarely find. Coming from one of the region's treasured, multiple 100-point award-winning producers, Tua Rita's Perlato del Bosco is a superb find. Aromatics include a mix of balsamic, sage, and ripe red strawberry lead to deeper red fruit flavors with hints of mint and tobacco. It is also a tremendous food wine and one that it all to easy to pull the cork on as it is drinking perfectly at this young stage. While its price point seems to indicate this is some kind of second or third wine, 2013 Perlato del Bosco is a handcrafted, small production gem that many wineries would be proud to have as their flagship. Drink now or hold for the next five to ten years.

This is very plush, fresh, and balanced, showing plenty of ripe plum, black cherry, wild herbs and a hint of orange zest in the nose. I enjoyed a glass (or 2) of this while I whipped up a mélange of sautéed vegetables with a salad of fresh tomato, basil and bocconcini. This would be equally wonderful with some meat on the grill or a simple plate of cured meats and cheese.

What's not to like about this wine? It shows velvety tannin, soft fruit and great lift and freshness. This is the perfect Summer dinner wine as it can stand up to hearty BBQ dishes, but is softer than many Italian wines and ready to drink now, so it's easy to drink at a picnic as well. The nice scores are well deserved on this guys and will be one of my go-to reds for as long as we can keep it in stock.

- The most widely planted grape in Italy is Sangiovese, a high-acid grape with moderate to high tannins, apparent earthiness and subtle fruit. It is thought to have originated in Tuscany and its name, which translates to "blood of Jove," leads historians to believe it may date all the way back to the Etruscan period, though historical mentions only go as far back as the early 1700s. Though planted all over modern Italy, the most significant wines made from Sangiovese still come from Tuscany: Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino. Sangiovese must make up 75% of a blend from the Chianti DOCG t be labeled as such, traditionally allowing for Canaiolo, Trebbiano and Malvasia for the remainder, though more recently small proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot have been allowed. In Brunello di Montalcino the wine must be made entirely of Sangiovese. Prugnolo is Montepulciano's name for Sangiovese, and it is used there for the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wines. In the DOC of Carmignano Sangiovese can be blended with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. There are also Super Tuscans, IGT wines that blend Sangiovese with large proportions of Cabernet or Merlot. Elsewhere in Italy it is a workhorse grape, though it does find some success (though not the longevity) in the Montefalco and Torgiano wines of Umbria as well as the foundation of Rosso Piceno and a significant element of Rosso Conero from the Marches. Like Nebbiolo, Sangiovese has struggled to find footing outside of Italy, though in recent years California wineries have been having better fortune with grape plantings in the Sierra Foothills/El Dorado County, as well as Sonoma County and the Central Coast.


- Once named Enotria for its abundant vineyards, Italy (thanks to the ancient Greeks and Romans) has had an enormous impact on the wine world. From the shores of Italy, the Romans brought grapes and their winemaking techniques to North Africa, Spain and Portugal, Germany, France, the Danube Valley, the Middle East and even England. Modern Italy, which didn't actually exist as a country until the 1870s, once produced mainly simple, everyday wine. It wasn't until the 1970s that Italy began the change toward quality. The 1980s showed incredible efforts and a lot of experimentation. The 1990s marked the real jump in consistent quality, including excellence in many Region that had been indistinct for ages. The entire Italian peninsula is seeing a winemaking revolution and is now one of the most exciting wine Region in the world.
