2004 Smoky & Peaty Tobermory (Ledaig) 8 Year Old Hepburn's Choice K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1192851

Nearly half of Tobermory's production is dedicated to peated malt whisky. This is known typically as Ledaig, but for some reason that word never actually makes it onto our independently bottled offerings of this special whisky. Labeled here as "Smoky & Peaty," for those of you who've been following us for a while you'll know that we love these young Ledaigs. This is the third young smokey Tobermory we've offered and shockingly the price is the same as last year's even though this is a year old (and arguably a better whisky). The rugged peaty malt that comes out of this distillery is unlike anything from Islay. The smoke is more earthy than oceany (for some reason it's really reminding me of Port Charlotte today). Herbaceous and intense, the dark earthy peat is balanced by a wonderful sweet malt. This is way more in balance than even our last Ledaig and feels more put together than the even the distillery bottling. Amazing what only 8 years in a refill hogshead can do when the spirit is on point.

WOW! As someone who has long loved single malt scotch, and yet is fairly new to the business of REALLY learning about their nuances (Thanks, David), I am super excited to say that this is one of the most interesting things I've tasted in a long time. A full-bodied and intense experience, this exclusive bottling of a Tobermory (Ledaig) is balanced and robust. The co-mingling of the earthy smoke, vibrant fruit notes, and long finish make this a superb example of Island whiskies! Get one while they last.

This is one of the better Ledaigs we've tasted. Considering this is the same price as the 46% standard bottling I think it's a steal. Last year we destroyed it with a nice 7-year-old "smoky island" whisky from this same distillery. Here we have a whisky that's listed as an 8-year but is actually closer to 10 years (distilled 2004 - bottled 2014). It's a slightly cleaner version of this special malt than last year's offering from Exclusive Malts. It's old, better, and the EXACT same price. NO BRAINER! Stock up before the geeks realize what they're missing and it's gone forever.

Those who enjoyed the Ledaig cask we did with the Exclusive Malts will really dig this one. The peat is clean and fresh, the flavors are pronounced and linear. It's Island whisky without the medicinal notes or the oily, dirty smoke. It's just peat and salt and bright, fresh flavor.

This is one single malt that I think one would never be tired of drinking. It has nice smoke aromas but they are not too heavy. The smoke is followed by nice round and fruity (but not too sweet) malty flavors. It is a very pleasant everyday treat.
