 Smoothly seductive in bright red-berry and pomegranate fruit, this young Zinfandel comes from mostly Dry Creek Valley vineyards. Rippling in baking spice and subtle vanilla oak, it’s a complete wine, with balanced acidity and mellowed tannins. Clean and long on the finish, it will complement rather than overpower a meal. Duckhorn Wine Company's excellent value Decoy Zinfandel is sourced mainly from Dry Creek Valley in Sonoma County, and was aged in 40% new oak barrels. It may not walk or talk like a Duckhorn--renowned for its Napa Valley Merlot--but this purveyor of "everyday wine for the well-informed" has made the right choice in sourcing from a Zinfandel hotspot. From the winemaker: "This is perhaps the richest and most robust expression of Decoy Zinfandel we have ever produced. Aromas of spicy dark fruit flow from the glass underscored by oak-inspired notes of vanilla and clove. On the palate, flavors of ripe berry and bramble mingle with hints of Christmas spices and mocha with polished tannins and lingering acidity adding to a long, satisfying finish."

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
