2013 Bodegas Puelles Blanco Rioja

SKU #1150966

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north-facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. This white wine consists primarily of Viura, but also has some Garnacha Blanca, Malvasia and Chenin Blanc in the blend. Bright, clean apple and citrus flavors combine with terrific minerality to make this perhaps one of the best young white Riojas I tasted this year-to-date. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish Wine Buyer)

This is another fantastic wine from Puelles. If you are looking for a refreshing summer white to pair with shellfish, you found it. This wine has a little more body than most whites with this much acidity and minerality. The citrus and tropical fruit notes carry the acidity into a long finish. This is deliciously well-suited for those hot, late-summer days.

This is one of my favorite white wines in the store, and it is not for those of you who like heavily over-extracted, over-the-top, oaky, full ML style Chardonnays. It is really dry, clean, crisp, mineral-driven style of white wine with tons of character and a mouthwatering set of flavors. The nose will remind you of dandelions with lime zest fruit undertones that carry over to a bright, flashy set of flavors, and a bright, fresh finish. The Bean has demanded that I bring home, as with previous vintages, several cases of this Gem for our near-term, shellfish dining enjoyment. ***** 12.0% ABV *****

Another very tasty offering from Puelles. This light white has a lovely citrus nose with hints of vanilla and fruit. The taste is well balanced with an almost tropical offering and just the right amount of acid. Very easy drinking.

Super Bargain alert! Here's a great under-the-radar white wine for only $10 that should be seriously considered! Tasty and well-made, Puelles blanco is a light-bodied white Spanish blend that delivers an exotic citrus-like aroma with a kiss of vanilla. The blend is clean and fresh, and offers up a silky texture with tropical notes and the flavor of a crisp green apple. This is the perfect party wine: all you need now is good music and laughs!

The Puelles Blanco is undeniably a top white wine deal every year! Vibrant citrus and refreshing acidity shine with nice weight and minerality that keeps you coming back for more. This should be your house white wine for summer!

My favorite white wine value in the store, Chus Puelles' white wine is based primarily on Viura grapes, which give the wine a bright, citric and green apple character, as well as a clean, crisp chalky minerality. Most of the fruit in this wine is grown in the village of Abalos, one of the prime Rioja Alta villages. At under $10 it's tough to find a dry white that consistently hits the spot like this one.

This crisp, refreshing bottle of white Rioja is in the style of the cleanest and freshest Sauvignon Blancs, but with a flavor profile all of its own. This wine makes a great aperitif as well as a partner to everything from white fish to cheese. Yum!

I love this wine!! It’s refreshing and crisp with sharp acidity and flavors of lemon curd and lime zest accompanied by an almost ocean-like salinity. The Puelles Blanco fits seamlessly with fish dishes or fatty cheeses like a triple crème.

The best white wine deal in the store -- period. Hands down. End of story (drops microphone and walks off stage). The refreshingly citric acidity is zippy and lively on the palate, but there's plenty of stonefruit and mineral goodness on the finish. For $9.99 you're getting a whole lot of wine for your money. Case up. 12 bottles still won't be enough.
