 (made from 90% roussanne and 10% marsanne, mostly from the granitic soils of Mauves, with the vines ranging from 8 to 60 years old): Bright yellow-gold. Intense, spice-accented aromas and flavors of poached pear, honey and tangerine. At once rich and lively, with strong back-end cut and stony persistence. Shows very nice definition for a rich wine.  A lush, toasty, buttery style, with creamed peach, white corn, piecrust and glazed pear flavors. Very flattering, revealing a buried blanched almond hint that keeps this honest through the finish.  (11/2013)

From the importer: "The vineyards for Céleste are located in Mauves on granitic slopes. It is the only white produced by Jean Louis Chave which comes from granitic soil. This wine is now available since 2009 thanks to the purchase by Domaine Jean Louis Chave of a well reputed historic St Joseph domaine. The wine is so stunning, Jean Louis continues to plant more Roussanne on the unplanted granite soils of this newly acquired domaine. This white St Joseph differs from the white Hermitage in that the soil of white Hermitage (clay and limestone) gives softness and suppleness to the wine whereas the granite soil expresses a wonderful minerality which perfectly accompanies food and gives an additional sense of vivacity." 14% abv.

Marsanne

- If you've ever enjoyed the white wines of France's Rhône Valley, then you've probably inhaled the intoxicating honeysuckle and almond perfume of Marsanne. Most often blended with Roussanne and, increasingly, Viognier, Marsanne adds body and perfume to the wines of St-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage and St-Péray. It also planted in small amounts in Australia and the United States, where California's Rhône Rangers have embraced it. Aliases include Ermitage, Hermitage Blanc, Marsana and Grosse Roussette.

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
