2010 Beckmen "Cuvée Le Bec" Santa Ynez Valley Rhône Blend
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
(made from 44% syrah, 34% grenache, 13% mourvedre and 9% counoise): Inky ruby. Ripe, smoke- and spice-accented black and blue fruits on the nose and in the mouth. Lush and open-knit but energetic as well, showing a suave floral quality on the long, sweet and gently tannic finish. An impressive example of this bottling, which has long been one of the Central Coast's best QPR wines.
"A fabulous wine for the money" remarked Robert Parker on the 2009 vintage of the 'Cuvee Le Bec' Rhone style blend from Beckmen Vineyards. "This is a fabulous set of wines...I was especially impressed with the reds. The estate works almost exclusively with biodynamically farmed fruit, uses indigenous yeasts and (with one exception) has a very refined approach to cooperage." (08/11) The 2010 vintage promises a strong follow-up. Composed of a similar Grenache and Syrah-based blend, with portions of Mourvedre and Counoise rounding things out, this flavorful red offers a ripe nose of red and black fruits, spiced with minerals, cracked pepper, and herbs. The palate is fruity and rich, echoing the berry and spice elements in the nose, but balanced by savory elements and a fine acid backbone. A little bit of the Rhone in Santa Ynez! Perfect with lamb sausage or a juicy burger topped with pork belly.
