2009 Sean Thackrey "Orion" St. Helena Red Blend

SKU #1070187 95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Saturated deep ruby. Wonderfully primary flavors of blueberry, blackberry, huckleberry, black olive, licorice and mint hint at a liqueur-like ripeness, but a subtle suggestion of chlorophyll gives the nose pungent lift. A wine of outstanding intensity and sap, conveying a lush texture and lovely savory complexity to its Syrah-dominated flavors of black fruits, minerals and smoke. Boasts an exhilarating balance of sweetness and acidity, with the extremely long finish energized by floral and pepper notes and framed by perfectly buffered tannins. This splendidly complex and concentrated wine still needs time to achieve its full potential. (4/2015)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Elaborate and impressive, in the manner of Sean Thackrey, a big, rich, alcoholic wine with massive flavors. The blackberries and currants are swamped with black pepper and various exotic spices, and the finish is thoroughly dry. There’s nothing shy or subtle about this wine, but it does express what California’s sun does so well. (10/2011)

K&L Notes

From enigmatic producer Sean Thackrey, comes another of his highly-allocated wines, this time a Rhône-style blend. Always quick to sell out, the previous vintage received 95 points from Robert Parker, who wrote: "Marching to the beat of a drummer largely unknown to any other winemaker in California, Sean Thackerey continues to produce some extraordinary wines, in this case from a field blend planted in 1905. This is clearly a Rhône Ranger blend, with a dense ruby/purple color and loads of incense, camphor, blue and black fruits, earth, and spice. Full-bodied, rich, and bursting with personality, the wine is unique/singular, with an intensity that has to be tasted to be believed. Drink it over the next decade or more."

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
Specific Appellation:

Napa Valley

- America's most famous wine region, which encompasses a varied geographical territory running about 20 miles long from the San Francisco Bay northward to the foot of Mount St. Helena. Napa's great diversity, both in terms of climate and terroir, has led to the creation of a number of smaller AVAs like Stags Leap District, Rutherford, Howell Mountain, Oakville and Mount Veeder, among others. Cabernet and chardonnay still reign supreme, but just about everything under the sun is grown in Napa Valley, in quality levels ranging from $2 jug wine to $500 a bottle California cab.
