2008 Shafer "One Point Five" Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon
This is so balanced and delicious now. Love the leather, forest floor and fresh mushroom character with dark fruits. Full and silky with ripe berries and spices and just a hint of wood. Velvety texture. Give it another three or four years of bottle age.

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five should turn out to be just as good. Slightly more powerful with sweeter fruit as well as more glycerin and fat, this is a big, full-bodied Stags Leap Cabernet offering abundant notes of roasted herbs, chocolate, cassis, incense and earth. Drink this deep, powerful 2008 over the next 10-15 years... Introduced several years ago, the Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five cuvee is aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. It is meant to be a reference point Cabernet from Stags Leap priced lower than Shafer’s limited production, usually monumental Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon. (RP)

Bright, deep red. Aromatic, rather claret-like nose combines currant, tobacco, black licorice and minerals; more red fruit than black. Much less forthcoming on the palate than the merlot, showing strong soil tones and minerality to the cherry and cedar flavors. Finishes with broad, dusty, palate-saturating tannins. A serious, ageworthy wine with attractive floral lift.
Full-bodied and rich, as all Shafer reds are, this wine’s blackberry, blueberry, currant and cassis flavors were aged in 100% new French oak, but the smoky wood overlay is seamless. The tannins are big, and the wine has a drink-me-now sweetness, but it really needs time.
Rough-hewn, chunky and extracted, with dried herb, leather, dried berry and sage. Not the typical Shafer polish, but consistent with the One Point Five style. Decant. Drink now through 2018.
