Valdespino "Inocente" Single Vineyard Fino Jerez (375ml)

 The NV Fino Inocente must be one of the few wines in Jerez that is still fermented in 600-liter American oak botas, which is an incredible amount of work compared with fermenting tens of thousands of kilos of grapes (or even more) in a big stainless steel tank. This method was the norm of yesteryear, but is so labor intense that it was discontinued in most wineries, and gives a big diversity of wines, as each barrel has its own character, which contributes to the complexity of the blend. Furthermore, the bottled wine is on average 8 to 10 years old. One other thing that makes it apart from other Finos is that the grapes are exclusively from the high part of the Macharnudo vineyard, so this is a single-vineyard Fino. The nose is very complex, showing the effect of the long lees contact: chalk, dried hay, aromatic herbs and salty almonds. The palate is full, but at the same time elegant and balanced, powerful and fine, with the texture of a Meursault rather than a Puligny. A very complex wine, that manages to be both powerful and elegant. Inocente is great value for money. Drink 2013-2016.  (8/2013)

That almond flavor is seasoned with sea salt notes and moderated by firm acidity that refrehses the substantial weight of the wine, while smoky aromas give it an extra touch of complexity. Arguably our best and most serious fino, Valdespino is unique in that they still ferment their finos in older oak barrels, not in stainless steel like everywhere else. This special fino hails from the Macharnudo Alta district, rated the best in all of Jerez for the quality of its albariza (chalk) vineyards. As an aside, the increasingly tough to find connossieur favorite, Equipo Navazos Fino, is sourced from Valdespino, proof of the terrific quality of their soleras. The quality of this wine for the price is simply incredible, and it should drink well for many, many years to be sure. Jancis Robinson writes: "Intense, for purists. Can you imagine being able to buy a top producers, top wine at the peak of its development anytime that you want it? Think of 8 year old half bottle of Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet "Clavoillon" sitting on K&L's shelf for under $20 and that will give you an idea of the type of value the Valdespino Inocente Single Vineyard Fino offers. Cinnamon and I drank this last night with tapas that I through together with oil packed tuna, mayonnaise and sherry vinegar on top of crackers. The great average age of the Inocente gives the wine a classic marcona almond nose and a dry, concentrated palate impression without being austere. This wine balances great complexity with easy drinkability like a great bottle of tete de cuvee Champagne. You can't afford not to try it!

This is a delicious and interesting Fino that would go well with some hard to match foods like olives, nuts or soups. The Valdespino Inocente is clean, crisp and dry like one would expect, but it also has a wonderful salty flavor like a good Manzanilla. This Sherry is delicate and fresh and should be consumed in one setting.

This could well be the best fino I've tasted to date. And one of the best Spanish wines I've ever had - all at under $20 for a half bottle. If you're looking for perfection in the fino style, if you're seeking out the benchmark, than I would say that this is it. Citric, saline and appley, with a wonderfully pale straw color, the purity and minerality of this wine, made from grapes grown in pure albariza (chalky soil) on one of the best vineyard sites in all of Jerez, is breathtaking. I urge you to try it and see for yourself.

Here is a fino that doesn't pull its punches. This is a full flavoured sherry, with an invigoratingly mineral-salty & flint-nose. Something akin to wet clay comes through on the palate, along with plenty of yeasty, mushroomic character, finishing with plenty of tang and a light dose of nuttiness. Delightful and distinctive!
