2008 Blason Franconia (End of Vintage)

Giovanni Blason and his consulting enologist Andrea Rossi have turned this 37-acre property into a juggernaut of affordable quality wines. Giovanni and his wife Valentina own this winery in Gradisca d’Inzonzo, 3.75 miles from the Slovenian border and about 20 miles north of Trieste. Franconia is rarely seen in the U.S. (the name of the grape has nothing to do with Franken wines of Germany), and it's a shame. This is a ruby red wine, with a distinctively herbal aroma and flavor, and a velvety mouth feel. Best of all, it is quite low in alcohol, making it just the red to gulp down when eating minestrone, perhaps, or rustic pasta tossed with speck and cheese.

from northern Italy’s Friuli region (which was Austrian controlled until the end of World War I). Please don't confuse the grape Franconia from Friuli with the German region of Franconia, (why do people get confused about Italians grape varietals I do not know?). Once you have tried this, you will never confuse the grape again. It has broad perfumes of black cherries, violets and rose petals. On the palate it has a soft brambly fruit, hints of cola and soft tannins. Give a light chill and prefect with grilled portabella or burgers.

The 2008 Franconia (100% Blaufränkisch) has a nose of juicy red berries spiced with anise and herbs. On the palate, meatier flavors come forward, adding complexity to the essence of just-ripe red and black berries. Young, lively and fresh, this red has slightly higher acidity and is lower in alcohol, making it ideal with the famous regional prosciuttos, salumi and cheeses. This wine also complements the traditional Fruilian dish of seasoned boiled pork sausage and turnips known as musetto with brovada.

We just landed two exceptionally drinking Italian reds in the 2008 Podere Ruggeri Corsini Barbera d’Alba* ($14.99), 13.5% ABV, and 2008 Blason Franconia* ($9.99), 14% ABV. The Corsini offers tons of bright, flashy raspberry to jasmine-like fruit in a full bodied, structured, integrated package that is just a joy to drink now. The Blason Franconia (also known as Blaufränkisch) is also a really wonderful drinker. Medium-deep ruby in color, this Gem provides an intense, focused spicy anise to herb clove-like aromas and set of flavors, with excellent balance and a rich long mouthfeel and finish. According to Anderson, these two Gems will be our house reds for the month. (Jim Barr)

- Once named Enotria for its abundant vineyards, Italy (thanks to the ancient Greeks and Romans) has had an enormous impact on the wine world. From the shores of Italy, the Romans brought grapes and their winemaking techniques to North Africa, Spain and Portugal, Germany, France, the Danube Valley, the Middle East and even England. Modern Italy, which didn't actually exist as a country until the 1870s, once produced mainly simple, everyday wine. It wasn't until the 1970s that Italy began the change toward quality. The 1980s showed incredible efforts and a lot of experimentation. The 1990s marked the real jump in consistent quality, including excellence in many Region that had been indistinct for ages. The entire Italian peninsula is seeing a winemaking revolution and is now one of the most exciting wine Region in the world.
