*96 points, Ultimate Spirits Challenge Top 100 of 2020* Ocho's tequilas are made by Carlos Camarena, a third-generation Tequilero, and Tequila Ambassador Tomas Estes. And each vintage -- yes, these are vintage designated tequilas -- comes from a single estate with its own mesoclimate, making them the most terroir-driven tequilas on the market. The NOM 1474 or Tequilera Los Alambiques actually represents the very same facility where the famous Tapatio and El Tesoro are made, the famous La Altena Distillery. This collaboration seeks to distill the purest f...

Wine & Spirits: "Named after the village celebrations for which mezcal was originally produced, El Jolgorio Mezcal presents a study in agave species with nine different bottlings. Each one is made from wild-harvested varieties by Zapotec distillers, with the names of the villages, makers, agave types and age inscribed on each bottle. The Mexicano, made by Valentín Cortéz, is wonderfully herbal, almost oregano-like, with mineral notes and a light, plummy sweetness. The Arroqueño is made from an enormous variety of agave, blended to yield a magnificently f...

Azteca Azul is produced by one of the finest highland distillers in the world, Tequila Supremo. Known commercially as Casa Camarena, the famous house was established by Augustin Camarena in 1938. The prominent agave-growing family founded the town of Arandas and multiple distilleries. The woman who runs the distillery, Dona Elena Herrera Orendain, is Tequila royalty. The great-great-granddaughter of Don José Cuervo, she's built Casa Camarena into Jalisco's fourth largest distiller that you've never heard of. Despite their size, their commitment to qualit...

THIS ITEM CANNOT SHIP. This distinctive aged tequila comes in a handcrafted, hand-painted, Mexican ceramic bottle. Produced in Jalisco from 100% blue weber agave, the tequila is twice distilled and aged in fine oak barrels. With smooth flavors and aromas, this tequila is beautifully well balanced.

This K&L exclusive is made of rare agaves that were roasted, mashed, fermented, and distilled together. Sierra Negra is an Agave Americana, akin to Arroqueño, but with a shorter lifespan (12-15 years) and thinner leaves which have a distinct black spine running up and down their edges. It grows wildly, but is also cultivated by a select few intrepid souls. Alberto Martinez, producer of this incredible mezcal is one of the few distillers left in Santa Catarina Alborradas. The altitude is about 6,500 feet above sea level at the distillery and Alberto's fie...

This blanco is wonderfully supple with butterscotch flavors that come from the five day fermentation of the agave. There is no barrel aging yet it tastes so rich! Guillermo Erickson Sauza, a fifth-generation family member, produces Tequila Fortaleza using traditional techniques. This is a beautifully hand-crafted, stone-milled tequila. Tequila Fortaleza is produced entirely within the walls of their estate, using centuries-old traditional methods which, although very labor intensive, create a tequila that is unequaled in taste and smoothness. Using an ol...

Tequila Tapatio "Excelencia" Extra Añejo Tequila (1L)
Top Pick!
The oldest expression from Carlos Camarena's Tapatio brand is finally available stateside. Rich and butterscotchy and with hints of black pepper and citrus, it is distilled exclusively from perfectly matured agave at the famous La Altena distillery in Arandas. When they tell you how this stuff was made, it just boggles the mind. Distilled in 2000, this is the official SECOND batch of Excelencia. It was filled into the same barrels as the first directly after they were dumped and aged for four years before being transferred into glass containers. There it...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Close your eyes and you might think that’s tomato juice in the glass. It’s clear, but the fragrance is zesty, lemony and yes, fresh tomato-like. On the palate, dried oregano and green pepper come forward, plus a trace of tomato savoriness, and it finishes light, with lively lemon zest. It’s mouthwatering, with moderate alcohol feel. (KN)" (04/2014) K&L Notes: This is such great tequila that it is well worth spending the extra dough. All the bright agave floral notes jump out at you on the nose, and the palate packs a strong ...

This espadin (A. Angustifolia) mezcal is the perfect place to start for anyone looking to explore the world of quality mezcal or for a relatively inexpensive option for your mezcal based cocktails. It's very approachable and laden with sweet agave fruit. The smoke component is decidedly there, but not very intense. A rich texture makes this a delightful sipper or stout component in a mezcal variant of the Last Word.

Siembra Valles Ancestral is a project conceived of a love of history and a desire to know tequila from its roots, celebrating its true identity and a curiosity of what the past once tasted like. With agave untouched by machine, the Ancestral boasts the complexity of nature's flavors and the skills of tequilero ancestry. It begins its journey through time in the pristine blue agave fields nurtured by the Rosales family’s team of expert cultivators, jimadores, and a lowland terroir. The fruitful plants can credit their rich flavors to a pesticide-free land...

From the distillery of Enrique Fonseca, the man behind the legendary K&L Fuenteseca, comes this value-priced label of liter-sized tequila that seems almost too good to be true. I'm willing to bet we'll have a problem selling the Cimarron selections, rather than the ridiculous success we should experience, simply because people will wonder why it's so cheap? Don't let the price tag sway you, however -- this is clean, fresh, easy-drinking tequila made from 100% agave that is definitely up to Enrique's high standards. The reposado is mellow and soft on the ...

YOLA Mezcal has reached perfect balance between authenticity and aesthetics. Created in collaboration between Yola Jiminez (of La Clandestina Mezcaleria fame), Lykke Li (Swedish songwriting sensation), and Gina Correll Aglietti (chef and stylist), YOLA counters the patriarchal system which is so ubiquitous in the Oaxaca. YOLA is run by women and bottled by women. We've seen time and again that no palenque succeeds without the aid of a strong women, and YOLA provides a place where the women of Oaxaca can have steady work. In addition, they happen to be ma...

Rey Campero "Tio Ramiro" Cuishe K&L Exclusive Single Batch Mezcal (750ml)
Top Pick!
This extremely rare batch of Cuishe is why we make a point of travelling to visit producers. Originally not for sale, we were able to taste this extremely special batch while at the Rey Campero Palenque in Candelaria Yegole in February, 2020. This batch alone would have made the nearly 4 hour dirt road journey worth the trek. This was distilled by Romulo's father, 'Tio Ramiro' - who taught Romulo how to make mezcal. This superlative batch was destined for family gatherings and celebrations, just resting in a giant food grade tote off to the side of the t...

Enrique Fonseca distilled this expression in early Spring 2010, with three-quarters of the bottling made in a double-copper column still with removed plates to achieve a lower distillation proof and the remaining quarter made in an alembic pot still. Half of the run was then stored in American white oak previously used to age California red wine, and the remaining half barreled in used dark French oak. The casks were then stored for seven years at 3,800 feet elevation in a cool-climate subterranean barrel room.

Koch El Mezcal is one of Mexico's most sought-after brands. We've waited for years for this special brand to arrive and now that it's finally here it's selling out as quickly as we can get it. Don Julio "1942" Añejo Tequila (750ml)
Top Pick!
98 points Wine Enthusiast: "A stunning limited-edition añejo. The golden color and caramel scent hint at what’s to come: sweet agave flavor, a lingering whisper of smoke and mellow notes of tropical fruit, Sauternes and butterscotch. (KN)" (05/2011) K&L Notes: Cannot be shipped, will call pick up only. Don Julio is particularly proud of this limited-edition Añejo, and rightfully so: "I established my first tequila distillery in 1942 and to commemorate that very special year, I have created Don Julio 1942 as a unique and limited edition I personally sel...

This wonderful Mexicano (Agave Rhodancantha) was distilled by a high quality palenque in Santiago Matatlan. El Samaritano is the personal brand of the distillers, the Blas Family. The family has been making mezcal for three generations and still makes uses traditional artesenal techniques. The patriarche, Ambrosio Martinez Blas, has been working in the palenque since he was a young boy and plans to leave the distillery to his son. They'd never used Mexicano before and this special batch yielded less than 700 bottles. It's won double gold at the San Franc...

The Ramos Family doesn't usually have much Arroqueno, but you can see a few massive plants as you walk you walk through their fields. The massive sword like leaves tower above all but the tallest Karwkinskii and their ashy color distinguishes them from other A. Americana in the field. The 2019 harvest only yielded about 100 liters and the family consumed or sold about half of it in the 4 months between when it was distilled and when we arrived. One taste and you'll know exactly why. This excellent example of the already well-liked varietal offers an incr...

The follow up to the unbelievable first batch of Huerta Singular, the Las Antenas highlights a completely different terroir with the same goal of creating a completely unique example of blanco tequila. The over-ripe pinto Blue Weber agave for this batch was grown entirely in the mineral-laden caliche soils of Vista Hermosa in Michoacán. The ground is rich in calcium carbonate at the high elevation field. Just over five thousand feet from the sea level, the agave was left to ripen in the field after the quixote was cut resulting in an ultra-ripe "pinto" o...

This tequila is aged two to three years in oak barrels and has a beautiful silky smooth character that does añejo right: rich, but not cloyingly sweet. Before starting Lalocura in 2014, Eduardo Ángeles spent years working as the fourth generation master distiller of his family’s label Real Minero, where he combined a lifetime of working under his father, the late, great Don Lorenzo with a degree in agricultural engineering, and a philosophy that is all his own.

Lalocura's clay pot distilled mezcales have built a steady cult following of chefs, writers, and mezcal-heads, who turn up at the palenque each day hoping to spend a few hours listening to maestro mezcalero Eduardo "Lalo" Ángeles tell stories. From Mezcalreviews.com: "Mal Bien Espadin is produced by Don Juan Hernández Méndez in Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca. He is a fifth generation mezcalero and he follows the traditions and processes that his family has been using for over one hundred years. This mezcal smells of roasted meat, ground corn, and pine tar. On the palate, there are notes of leather, caramelized banana, and barley."

In the early spring of 2019, the K&L buying team travelled to Oaxaca to search for incredible small batch examples from Mexico's very best producers. We visited the Ramos family rancho expecting great things. What we found were three exquisite micro batches offering unprecedented flavor and rarity. The creators of Mal Bien Mezcal are building incredible partnerships with their producers. They've become like family and after sitting with Emmanuel for lunch we ventured into the locked shed behind the house where the family stores their mezcal. This insane ...

Los Vecinos Del Campo is the new mezcal project from Sazerac and Carmen Villareal of Casa San Matias. As with any upstart mezcal brand our first instinct is to tread with caution. There's alot of opportunity to get things wrong when bringing a new mezcal to market, but we're extremely happy to note that our friends from New Orleans avoided all of them. Instead, we get an incredible affordable authentic artesenal mezcal from the village of San Miguel Ejutla in Oaxaca's central valley. Carmen's connections to the area go way back and she was able to identi...

"Tapatio" is a word that refers to a man from Jalisco, the Tequila-producing state in Mexico. In this case, it refers to Don Felipe Camarena, who opened the La Alteña distillery in 1937 where his grandchildren now make Tapatio tequila. The family has roots of making tequila that reach back to the 1800s, but the family's destillery was destroyed during the Mexican Revolution. The blanco is wonderfully vibrant with plenty of spice and a clean finish. Wonderful for sipping or for a killer margarita. 96 points from the Beverage Testing Institute: "Clear colo...

I first stumbled across the Verde Momento at an excellent bar called Guilty in Guadalajara. This city is vibrant, complex, and cosmopolitan, filled with excellent food and highbrow cocktail stops along side old school saloons, bad tourist traps and well worn corners where some of the world's finest tacos are slung. When I saw the wild label across the bar, I imagined that this must be some new boutique-y, ultra-limited mezcal, but when the bartender reached for it to prepare my cocktail, I realized that this might just be something more attainable. Introducing the newest addition to Jake Lustig's ArteNOM portfolio, the deliciously fruit-forward blanco expression from NOM 1579. The mountain town of Jesús-María (elev. 6,079’) is Tequila’s highest altitude agave region, and the El Pandillo Distillery is arguably one of the most forward-thinking and sustainable distilleries in the business. There, Felipe Camarena masterfully crafts this bright, aromatic tequila from stressed hillside agave plants, slowly roasted in brick ovens and macerated intact with fiber for a pronounced agave flavor. It's an insta...

Great news for you blanco tequila fans! You can finally polish off that last bit of ArteNOM 1079 you've been hoarding since the batch switched over more than a year ago. Your replacement tequila has finally arrived. David Suro's new Siembra Valles project switches the juice from the Vivancos at NOM 1414, over to NOM 1123 and the distillate of Tequila Cascahuin. This is the best thing to happen to blanco tequila fans in years because this is one of the roundest, fruitiest, soft and plump blanco tequilas I've ever tasted. It's full of sweet agave notes, cr...

El Viejo is a special blend of Tobala and Espadin from Union Mezcal. The Union between the producers, farmers, and importers is what this brand is all about. The brand helps support a replanting project for wild agaves through a careful nursery program and replanting the young plants back into their natural wild habitat. The success rate for these agaves is many times higher than for cultivation attempts. It's these type of brands and projects that will help ensure we have Mezcal to enjoy for many years to come. Of the thousands of seeds they plant, only...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Co-owned by actor George Clooney and nightlife impresario Rande Gerber, this blanco is smooth and light. The aromas are restrained, but on the palate look for mild agave sweetness backed by lemon zest, ginger and white pepper sparks, plus a candied lemon-peel note on the gentle exit. (KN)" (05/2014) K&L Notes: Very rarely does a product like this come to our attention without a sneer or a snicker. Casa Madero owns and operates the oldest vineyards and winery in the entire American Continent. 73 years after Hernan Cortez conquered the Aztecs, Don Lorenzo Garcia explored the north of Mexico, and in the midst of a desert, came across a veritable oasis with water springs and abundance of native vines, from whose grapes the first American wine was ever produced. The place was called "Santa Maria de las Parras", or Holy Mary of the vines, as parras is Spanish for vines. On the 19th of August 1597, Don Lorenzo García took formal possession of a land gran...
