2011 Lopez de Heredia "Viña Cubillo" Crianza Rioja
Top Pick!
95 points James Suckling: "Cubillo spends three years in barrique and then in larger cask to await bottling, which happens two years before the expected release. This is very fresh on the nose with quite fresh, ripe blackberries and dark cherries, mahogany and dry, woody spices. The palate is very powerful, juicy and fresh with clear black cherries and plums in abundance. So fresh, fleshy and deep. The freshness is impressive. Long, shell-like tannins. Drink or hold." (07/2019) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It's not easy to follow a 2010, b...

2016 Bodegas Castaño "Solanera Viñas Viejas" Yecla
Top Pick!
93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Solanera is up with the finest vintages I’ve tasted of this cuvée (and I’ve had most of them). A blend of 65% Monastrell, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Grenache, all from more limestone and higher elevation soils (and the Monastrell vines are 70 years old), it reveals a saturated purple color as well as full-bodied notes of blue fruits, cedarwood, spiced cherries, and peppery herbs. It’s deep, rich, and textured, yet also balanced and beautifully pure. It’s a steal at the price." (04/2019)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The truly impressive 2018 Ultreia Saint Jacques transcends its price category. They destemmed more grapes because they fermented it in the oak vats they bought from Vega Sicilia to use in the new winery, where it macerated for two months and then matured in used barrels for nine to 10 months. The secret is to use very good grapes from very good vineyards. The wine is clean, precise and fresh, and the oak is super-subtle, almost unnoticeable. The palate reflects a fluid wine of pleasure, a red of thirst. This is t...

93 points James Suckling: "So fresh and elegant with more than enough concentration and structure, this is a fine example of a 2015 Reserva. Ripe-blackberry, licorice, smoke and bourbon notes. I love the velvety texture of the long, intense finish. Better from 2019 and with long aging potential." (08/2018) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The red blend 2015 Rioja Reserva is 80% Tempranillo with 12% Graciano, 6% Mazuelo and 2% Garnacha, a little more Graciano and Mazuelo, something logical in ripe and warm years like 2015. It's produced with gr...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The red 2016 Cune Crianza is an affordable and classical blend of Tempranillo with some 15% Garnacha and Mazuelo that is easy to drink and understand, with a soft palate and an approachable profile. It has a bright nose with red fruit rather than black, quite aromatic and expressive. The palate is soft and approachable, very easy to drink, with a touch of freshness. They produced a whopping 4.5 million bottles of this! The bottle I tasted was bottled in April 2019 after 12 months in barrique. There are eight diff...

2017 Bodegas Palacios Remondo "La Montesa" Crianza Rioja
Top Pick!
92 points James Suckling: "Lots of cherry and raspberry aromas with floral undertones here. Medium body, ultra-fine tannins and a fresh finish. Fruity finish. A little tight now. Better in 2021." (07/2019) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 La Montesa is mostly Garnacha with some 8% other red varieties and comes from a warm and dry year that saw a very early harvest, up to 20 days earlier than usual. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in barrique for 12 months. It feels very Mediterranean, with notes of Mediterranean herbs and ...

2010 Marqués de Murrieta "Castillo Ygay" Gran Reserva Especial Rioja
Top Pick!
99 points James Suckling: "Marvelous aromas of crushed berries, tobacco, cedar and mushrooms. Some dried cheese. Then turns to flowers. Very complex. Full and intense with fantastic depth and power. It goes on for minutes. It is a wine that exudes tradition but gives a sense of modernity with precise winemaking. Two years in oak, one in concrete and three or four in bottle. Drink on release and age onwards." (07/2019) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I had very high expectations for the 2010 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial, and the wine de...

91 points James Suckling: "A red with cherry and blackberry aromas and flavors. Medium body. Attractive acidity to the ripe fruit on the palate. Really enjoyable." (07/2019) K&L Notes: As is the case with so many other great spots in Spain, Bodega Casa Juan is located opposite the village church, in the beautiful walled pueblo of Laguardia. The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine; and for aging, barrels that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in elaboration and spirit...

95 points James Suckling: "This is really tight and powerful with gorgeous tannins and solid fruit. Full body. Tight and composed. Wet earth, smoked meat and hints of black truffles. Very long and powerful. Wonderful length. Real Rioja. One of the top best-value, high-quality reds in Spain." (07/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This has the Muga style and the imprint of the cool and fresh 2016 vintage, one of the best vintages of recent years. 2016 is also a year of harmony and freshness that reminds me a little of the 2010. But the Muga...

James Suckling: "A brambly array of violet and cassis aromas with a wealth of succulent, juicy and sappy berry flavors. Slightly rustic edge to the finish." (07/2019) K&L Notes: Composed of the same grapes in the same percentages as the Crianza, the Reserva is a barrel selection of wines that Angel Escudero feels can undergo longer aging in barrel and then in bottle. Aged a total of 27 months in barrels, then into concrete for more than a year, the Reserva also sees bottle aging until Angel deems it ready for release. This wine ramps up the intensity o...

93 points Wine Spectator: "This red is sleek and solid, in the modern style. Bright cherry, berry and currant flavors mingle with licorice, black tea and mineral notes, giving way to a floral and minerally finish. The firm tannins are well-integrated and juicy acidity keeps this lively. Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. (TM)" (08/2020)

Mas Codina is a 40-hectare estate in Penedès which dates back to 1681. This Brut Reserva Cava was hand-harvested from 25- to 40-year-old vines and estate-bottled. Though it does not say it on the label, the current disgorgement is based entirely on the 2015 harvest. Vines are planted in calcareous and sandy clay soils which keep the wine minerally and lively. The wine undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle, and is aged on its lees for a minimum of two years before disgorgement. Varietals include Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. 100%...

Our fifth vintage of this direct import Albariño, this wine shows everything we like in the grape: hints of lemongrass, lively stone fruit, and a brisk, saline-tinged palate. Located in the sub-zone of Condado do Tea, where the days are a bit warmer and evenings are slightly cooler, there is a wonderful mid-palate presence to complement the typically lean and mineral qualities of Albariño. A classic with any shellfish, especially Dungeness crab!

2018 Vinos del Viento "Old Vine" Garnacha Calatayud
Top Pick!
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The young and fruit-driven 2018 Garnacha Old Vines was produced with grapes from Calatayud, and it fermented with semi-carbonic maceration and matured in concrete with lees for four months. It's juicy and ripe, with a round palate, fine tannins and a warm finish. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2019. Based in the Southern Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is bodega producing expressive, regionally specific wines at very reasonable prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and snow-covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. Martínez Alesanco's Blanco is made from equal parts Viura, White Tempranillo, Malvasi...

Based in the Penedes village of La Granada, Miquel Pons makes this crisp, clean cava with the indigenous grapes of the region: Xarel-lo, Macabeu and Parellada. Aged anywhere from 12-16 months, this is very refreshing with tasty fruit and a dry finish.

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "A stony, fresh nose is clean as a whistle, while this feels medium to full, with a faint skin-driven texture and citrusladen acidity. Orange and nectarine flavors are bright and fairly deep, while it remains alert across a snappy finish. (MS)" (12/2019) James Suckling: "Light cherries, strawberries, and white flower notes, even a touch of peach, emerges from the 2018 Rosado and it's medium-bodied, has beautiful fruit, good purity, and a clean finish. This is a refreshing and easy drinking as rose gets and is well worth a mul...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Mas Donis Old Vines is a blend of 50% Garnacha, 30% Cariñena and 20% Syrah fermented separately in stainless steel, and the Syrah and Cariñena matured in barrique until the components were blended before bottling in June 2019. It's a heady Mediterranean red blend—generous and round with a pretty floral nose and the aromatic power of the partial carbonic maceration. It has a juicy texture, clean, fruit-driven flavors and a textured mouthfeel. An incredible bargain. 5,000 bottles produced. (LG)" (08/2019) ...

2017 Borsao "Tres Picos" Garnacha Campo de Borja
Top Pick!
92 points James Suckling: "A super brambly red that has abundant rich and ripe, dark berry and cherry aromas. The palate is a riot of fresh dark berries and delivers a very plush, sweetly spiced, powder-dry finish. Drink or hold." (07/2019) Jancis Robinson: "The cooperative of Borja and also the Borsao brand was founded in 1958. Some years later, the cooperatives of Pozuelo and Tabuenca joined to establish a new company called Bodegas Borsao S A. They are one of the main producers of Garnacha in the world. Single varietal of Garnacha. Vineyards of up t...

88-90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Just before it was bottled, I tasted a sample of the new 2019 Rosé produced with Garnacha from Campo de Borja. It's a very pale pink and has a perfumed nose with notes of flowers and white fruit. They harvested early and achieved a wine of 14% alcohol (a bit high for my liking), denoting a warm and dry year, but the wine feels in balance. It's quite bright, with delicate aromas of dried flowers, subtle and elegant. The palate is tasty, with pungent flavors and good depth. It was kept with fine lees for two mon...

A K&L Direct Import! This is a new wine for us from the Bodegas Puelles stable. "Segundo año" means second year, and refers to the fact that it is released in the wine's second year following harvest. Prior to the more widespread usage of terms such as crianza, reserva and gran reserva, wineries would indicate the age of their wine by stating segundo, cuarto, quinto or whichever was the appropriate year. Not merely a quaint throwback, however, this segundo año is delicious, with bright, crisp fruit of excellent purity and a judicious amount of barrel ag...

92 points James Suckling: "Lots of ripe-fruit and smoked-meat character with hints of cried cheese and spice. Some stems. Medium to full body. Rounded, juicy tannins and a fruity finish. Delicious now." (06/2019) K&L Notes: Vinos del Viento is the most recent Spanish addition to our Direct Import portfolio. It is a project that focuses on Garnacha and Cariñena (Grenache and Carignan) from the region that is the origin for both varieties, Aragon. 97 points Decanter: ""This dark, relatively tight-knit Rioja proves that the Gran Reserva category doesn't just indicate the supremely well-aged, relaxed and reposeful style of Rioja, but can also serve to draw drinkers' attention to outstanding wines of density and tenacity which still have a way to run along their potential ageing trajectories. Look out for dark, urgent fruits here sweetened and back-lit by cunningly angled oak, with intense, deep, fresh and searching flavours in which the 10% of Graciano seems to be working overtime. A Rioja of innate...

96 points James Suckling: "The balance and purity to this wine is really impressive with blackberries, black truffles and dark fruit. Wet earth. Full body. Tight and compact. Structured, long and powerful. Superb length. Compressed and polished texture. Drink in 2022." (07/2019) 95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2015 Selección Especial checks in as 70% Tempranillo and the balance Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano that's an old vine and terroir selection. Aged 6 months in new oak followed by 24 months in 90% French oak and 10% American oak, it has a beautiful b...

From the importer: "Ameztoi is one of the top producers of Getariako Txakolina. They own 20 hectares of vines in the best location. From the vineyards one can see the town of St. Sebastian and understand the influence of the Atlantic Ocean on local viticulture. Made from the indigenous grape varieties of Hondarribi Zuri and its red companion Hondarribi Beltza. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and bottled with residual carbonic acid that gives the wine its natural spritz."

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The eponymous 2019 Zárate is their entry-level Albariño, a vintage with structure and acidity, still very young, a powerful vintage with more of everything and probably a long-distance runner. It's varietal and clean, characterful, powerful and with a long, tasty finish, vibrant and almost salty. 64,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2020. (LG)" (06/2020)

Native South African Bryan MacRobert grew up in a farming family and has been quietly making some of that country's best value wines. He fell in love with a girl from Rioja as well as the region's wines (we forget in which order) but quickly became fascinated with the inimitable terroirs and endless potential for wines in the region. A proponent not only of organic viticulture, but also a strong believer in the importance of legacy organically cultivated vines on top quality sites, Bryan is picky about where he grows and sources vines. The winemaking is ...

The nose is a little reticent but nuanced and complex, a little shy rather than explosive. The palate is medium-bodied, and the tannins are very refined. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Viña Tondonia Reserva of recent years. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2015. (LG)" (06/2019) 95 points James Suckling: "Th...

Full-bodied with lots of fruit, considering its age, as well as hints of smoke, tobacco, bark and black tea. Some balsamic at the finish. Traditionally styled with lovely results. Drink or hold." (10/2020) 94 points Vinous: "The 2011 Rioja Gran Reserva 904 has been one of my go-to cuvées since my earliest days as a wine lover. Mas Codina is a 40-hectare estate in Penedès which dates back to 1681. This Brut Rosé consists of Pinot Noir grown in their own vineyards in the middle Penedès region. Here the Garriga brothers are quite pleased with the results they see from the Pinot Noir grown in chalky-clay soils. They have been working organically for the past several years, and their first harvest doing so with certification was 2017. We direct import this delicious Cava, and it is arguably one of our best values in rosé bubbly right now. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Produced as an exercise of blending, the 2017 Albariño is a blend from the majority of plots they work, mixing different soils, different ages of vines and different pruning methods. This feels like a powerful vintage, with great concentration and some complexity even for such a young wine. There are floral and citrus notes and a sapid, salty-like sensation on the palate. It feels like a very complete and balanced year, with all that it takes to develop nicely in bottle. All of their wines are bottled without mal...

La Rioja Alta's Viña Ardanza has been our most popular Rioja for several years. It is no wonder, as this is the gold standard for traditional bodegas: a winery that ages their wines the old fashioned way, meaning three years in barrel with two rackings a year, followed by three years in bottle. According to the winery, the blend is, "80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. The Tempranillo grapes come from 30-year-old vines planted in our Viña Ardanza vineyards in Fuenmayor and Cenicero. Ameztoi produces some of the tastiest, most representative and classic txakoli: the delicious, bright, slightly petillant (fizzy), low alcohol wines that are consumed like water in Spanish Euskadi (Basque Country). Predominantly Hondarribi Zuri, with 10% Hondarribi Beltza from 20- to 25-year-old vines, fermented in stainless. 2017 Clos Erasmus "Laurel" Priorat
Top Pick!
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Laurel is a blend of the younger vines, some barrels that were declassified from Clos Erasmus and the remaining Cabernet Sauvignon, and in the low-yielding and dry 2017 vintage, it's 70% Garnacha, 20% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 15% alcohol. The wine fermented mostly in concrete and oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in a combination of oak vats, concrete, used barriques and amphorae for 16 months. They produce this to be approachable from the moment it's released. The 2017s feel very...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The bottle I tasted of the 2016 Viña Real Crianza is a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alavesa that fermented destemmed in stainless steel with neutral yeasts and matured in French and American oak barrels for 13 to 14 months, during which time it was racked every five or six months. It's expressive, deliciously aromatic, floral and elegant, reflecting a cool year that delivered fresh wines that seem to be very approachable early on. 2016 is a pretty vintage, but this wi...

Produced from nearly 100% estate, biodynamically grown Parellada, Macabeo and Xarel-lo, this is one of the classiest, best-made Spanish sparkling wines on the market. From their variety of calcareous clay soils, to the careful harvesting and proximity of their gravity-flow winery, both the quality of raw material and oenological know-how are abundant at this terrific estate. There is a very tiny dosage, less than 6g/l, and the overall impression here is of a very mineral, clearly delineated, chiseled sparkling wine that is truly first-rate. When you tast...

Here is a Priorat that is not at all shy or trying to hide its Mediterranean origins, a richer, fuller bodied style especially considering its modest price. Highly recommended.
