98 points Wine Enthusiast: "So enormously delicious, it will be hard to keep from drinking this gorgeous Cabernet right away, and that’s just fine. It’s composed of the most intensly concentrated flavors of blueberries and blackberries-dense, pure and slightly heady with a liqueur-like alcohol. The tannins are classic Diamond Mountain, firm and minerally, while oak plays the perfect role of the buttered toast and sweetly charred supporting character. Despite its immediate attraction, it’s best cellared for 6-8 years, at the very least. *Editor's Choice, ...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This portion of the winery's vineyard always yields Cabernets of enormous concentration with hard tannins. The 2009 is a classic, detonating in the mouth with laserlike blackberry and cassis flavors, to which new oak brings additional richness of smoky cedar. It's really a beautiful wine, but very tannic, even by Von Strasser standards. Give it at least eight years, and it could be drinking well 20 years from now. *Cellar Selection*" (10/2012) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep, dark red. Aroma...

97-98 points James Suckling: "This is mind blowing stuff. Notes of mint, minerals, currants, blackberries, with hints of cedar. Full bodied, very velvety and chewy. This won't be out until 2013. Winemaker believes this could be the best one yet, and I have to agree." (02/2011) 98 points Vinous: "Shafer's 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is all high notes. Sweet red plum and cherry notes meld into mint, spice and new leather, all supported by silky, polished tannins that add finesse to the plush fruit. Rich, opulent and beautifully textured throu...

93 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A ripe, spicy and quite densely fruited nose speaks of a pretty mix of both red and blue Pinot fruit along with background hints of cassis. The restrained intense and strikingly well-detailed medium-bodied flavors possess an abundance of mouth coating extract that buffers the firm tannic spine on the impressively complex, long and exquisitely balanced finish. *Outstanding*" (10/2011) 93 points John Gilman: "The Bearwallow bottling is made from purchased grapes and typically shows the slightly warmer aspect of Ander...

Wine Spectator: "Soft and jammy, with appealing raspberry and toasty vanilla aromas that lead to zesty cherry, pepper and briary sage flavors. Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and others." (06/2011) K&L Notes: This is a take-no-prisoner-style blend of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah and aged in a combination of new and seasoned oak. Burly, but somehow also elegant, it is teeming with red fruits and layers of tannic structure. It is the sort of red you want on a chilly evening, after a hard day, with something sustaining and equal...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard is one of the great wines of the vintage. It brings together gorgeous aromatics, juicy, expressive red fruit and silky tannins. Now seemingly past a period of closure post-bottling, the 2009 looks like a wine that will drink well pretty much throughout its entire life. The 2009 is a totally sexy Cabernet endowed with stunning depth and a rich, enveloping personality. This is pure Araujo and pure Eisele. 97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Cellar Selection 0 A dramatic wine, this is rich, full bodied and incredibly complex, laced with notes of ripe, sweet blackberries and crème de cassis, with a spirituous heat from relatively high alcohol. Its pedigree is clear throughout the entire tasting experience. This is a really gorgeous Cabernet, showing refinement and grace, but it is very tannic. Give it at least 10 years. *Cellar Selection*" (10/2012) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Flexes its muscle, with a dense, firm core of loamy earth, dark berry, black licorice, w...

95 points Vinous: "The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Schrader Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is one of the more plush, overt wines in this lineup. There is tremendous depth in the fruit in this massive, sweeping wine. The aromas and flavors build towards the cascading finish. The Schrader is a decidedly big, muscular wine that emphasizes power over detail. The Schrader is predominantly clone 4 from the D2 block, with a dollop of clone 6 from the D2 block and clone 337 from the B2 block. (AG)" (12/2011) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Intense and multifaceted, exhi...

This is the first vintage of Kiser Combe de Grès from the Kiser vineyard, 10 miles from the ocean in the Anderson Valley. It comes from a section of hillside vines where a narrow ravine travels from the upper block to the lower block, where the soils change from decomposed sandstone to rich clay with gravelly sandstone. The wine was aged for 15 months in one-third new French oak. Only three barrels of this wine was produced. Winery note: " With the richness of Kiser 'en Bas', combined with the floral, delicate features of Kiser 'en Haut,' 'Combe de Grés'...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Aida Estate offers up tar, smoke, minerals, licorice and blackberry jam. Mocha, grilled herbs and spices emerge later, adding considerable complexity and nuance. All the aromas and flavors meld together nicely through to the focused finish. This overt, generous Cabernet should drink well for the next decade or so. The 2009 is 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, 3% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. (AG)" (12/2011) 92 points Wine Spectator: "This weaves a rich tapestry of mocha, dark ...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Looking at the 2009 Cumulus Vineyard #3, it is an interesting blend of 80% Syrah, 14% Grenache and 6% Roussanne that spent 30 months in 30% new French oak. Offering up lively black fruits, pepper and roasted meat-like aromas on the nose, it’s a total knockout on the palate and has layers of richness that stay perfectly focused. Seamless, layered and long, with sweet tannin, it will continue to thrill for 10-12 years. (JD)" (08/2013) 96 points Vinous: "The 2009 Next of Kyn - No. 3 comes across as a mix of the 2...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Abel Vineyard is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Petit Verdot that was made with native yeast fermentation and malo. The 2008 Abel emphasizes richness and sheer weight. Dark fruit, mocha, espresso and copious French oak play off each other well. Still, this is an overdone style that doesn’t quite seem in sync with the best wines here. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. (AG)" (12/2011)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon GTS is big, rich and textured in its dark red fruit, flowers and mint. Silky tannins frame the perfumed fruit through to the finessed finish. The 2009 boasts gorgeous inner perfume and fabulous overall balance. It is far more approachable today than the 2010 tasted alongside it. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver and his wife Nancy own this three-acre vineyard on Diamond Mountain. Thomas Rivers Brown is the winemaker. The GTS spends 18 months in French oa...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "*Cellar Selection* Very tannic, in the Laurel Glen way, this young wine's toughness is due to the estate vineyard’s mountain terroir. In years past, Laurel Glen was a cult Cabernet. They perhaps dropped the ball for a while, but this wine stages a big comeback. It’s rich and vital in black currant and mineral, with just the right touch of new oak, and it shows a sophistication not seen from the winery in years. And at this price, it's a bargain. Drink now-2021, as it gradually softens and sweetens." (12/2012) 93 points Step...

93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Opaque ruby. Intensely aromatic nose offers candied red berries along with seductive notes of woodsmoke, spicecake and incense. Lush raspberry and blackberry compote flavors expand and deepen with air, with sweet floral pastille and cola notes coming up with air and lingering on the long, juicy finish. This suave, creamy, utterly seductive Zin is already drinking awfully well. Cabral told me that these vines were planted in 1932." (06/2011) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Strikes a nice balance bet...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An extended barrel-aged release, the 2009 Syrah This Is Not An Exit is 100% from the Santa Rita Hills Eleven Confessions Vineyard and checks in as a blend of 80% Syrah, 12% Grenache, 7% Roussanne and 1% Viognier that saw 41.5 months in 65% new French oak. Slightly exotic, with notions of kirsch, flower oil, smoked meats, licorice and graphite, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness and depth, loads of fruit and a blockbuster finish. More approachable than the 2010 extended barrel age Syrah, this beauty will...

Antonio Galloni in Wine Advocate: "Peay is one of the most intriguing young wineries in Sonoma. Brothers Andy and Nick Peay bought their property in 1996 and began planting in 1998. This site, near Annapolis, is in the coldest part of Sonoma County. When things go well, the harvest takes place in October. Two tons per acre – considered very low anywhere else in the world – is a very generous harvest here. Normal yields are in the 1.3-1.5 tons per acre range. Vanessa Wong, Nick Peay’s wife and a veteran of Peter Michael and Hirsch, makes the wines." (AG)

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An explosive, captivating wine, the 2009 Futo bursts from the glass with an exotic melange of incense, tobacco, wild flowers, licorice and plums. Full-bodied and racy, the 2009 covers every inch of the palate with stunning depth and purity. The tannins are firm and quite present, but there is so much fruit they are nearly buried. Readers will be tempted to drink the 2009 young, but my impression is that patience will be highly rewarded. This is yet another striking, totally compelling wine. (AG)" (12/2012) 94 p...

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good medium ruby. Dark, brooding aromas of cassis, licorice, graphite and chocolate, lifted by a floral topnote. Lush, sweet and seamless, with excellent lift to its ripe black fruit and mineral flavors. Most impressive today on the very long, juicy back end, which features wonderful suave soft tannins for this site I underrated this wine from barrel last year. This superb wine is harmonious already but should really be cellared for at least a few years. (ST)" (05/2012) 91-93 points Robert Parker...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Paderewski Vineyard is a new bottling from a site Smith developed for Bill and Liz Armstrong, the owners of Epoch. Zinfandel, Syrah, Petit Sirah and Mourvedre are planted in separate plots but co-fermented. Layers of dark fruit meld into flowers, mint, sweet spices, menthol, eucalyptus and plums, with marvelous density and harmony. This shows superb aromatic complexity and tons of nuance to match its absolutely striking personality. It is a dazzling effort, especially for a young vineyard in just its thi...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains is an excellent introduction to the house style. Floral aromas lead to layers of dark red fruit in this juicy, accessible Pinot. This is the least expensive Pinot in this lineup but it offers terrific balance, and shows no ill effects whatsoever of being tasted among the vineyard-designate bottlings. Fleshy, supple and wonderfully radiant, it will also drink better young than most, if not all, of those wines. The Santa Cruz Mountains is made from barrels that didn’t make i...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Simply put, the 2009 James Berry Vineyard is one of the greatest young wines I have ever tasted from California, or anywhere for that matter. Bright, floral aromatics lead to expressive red fruit in this impossibly elegant, dazzling wine. A melange of rose petals, mint and licorice follows as the James Berry shows off its breathtaking clarity and finesse. Fine-grained, chalky tannins frame the exceptional finish. Frankly, I am surprised this is the first wine of the tasting. Where does one go from here? (AG)" (08...

2009 Sine Qua Non "The Thrill of Stamp Collecting" Syrah
Top Pick!
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Syrah The Thrill Of impresses for its poise and underlying energy. Dark fruit, spices, licorice and violets sit on a core of firm tannin as this powerful wine opens up in the glass. Today, The Thrill Of comes across as very, very young. The intensity of the fruit and the oak are dominant at present. In another few years the wine should be spectacular. The Thrill Of … is 90% Syrah, 6% Grenache and 4% Viognier, all destemmed and mostly from estate owned vineyards. (AG)" (08/2012) 95 points Stephen Tanzer...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 La Muse (86% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec; 14.5% alcohol) is a blockbuster offering complex, intense notes of Asian plum sauce, figs, black currants, white chocolate and cedar. The wine reveals an extra level of texture and richness along with full body, an unctuous texture, and a super ripeness and richness that does not go over the top. The tannins are noticeable, but well-integrated as are the new oak and acidity. This big, backstrapping, Merlot-based wine is meant for long-term cellaring. ...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Materium from the Weitz Vineyard reveals lots of minerality along with sweet red and black currants, licorice, graphite and spring flowers. Deep and full-bodied, it is displaying a lot of tannin in addition to a reserved, backward, brooding style. Everything is there for super enjoyment and high quality, but patience is required. Steve Sherwin retired from a 30-year career as a builder and developer to become a vintner along with his wife Linda high upon Spring Mountain in the Napa Valley. In late 1999, Sherwin Family Vineyards released their first wine, a 1996 Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon."

The wine’s density and sheer richness emerge with time in the glass. Anticipated maturity: 2012-...

Dynamite Hill is Ridge's only Napa vineyard. Spring Mountain District is generally planted to Cabernet, and it's somewhat rare to see Petite Sirah grown there. This wine shows notes of blackberry, fennel, anise, with a hint of American oak. It's sexy and smooth, and will cellar for years.

97 points Vinous: "A glorious wine, the 2009 Cappella is in a fabulous spot for drinking today, as the aromatics are just starting to open up. Rose petal, kirsch, hard candy, spice, cedar, tobacco, mint and star anise give the 2009 striking perfume and a level of exoticism that is impossible to miss. The tannins have softened, which makes the wine accessible, and yet the fruit retains terrific freshness as well as nuance. Readers lucky enough to own the 2009 are in for a real treat.
