Here is a fine find from the Right Bank. Founded in 1704, this 14-hectare estate run by the Bardet family is located on gravelly/clay soils that impart depth and complexity to the wine. 86% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon. We just discovered this property in 2019, and we have already sold quite a bit of their 1995 and 1996. Super old-school label for an “old school” property. This wine has lots of red berry aromas and flavors. It really opens up with some decanting.

1972 Xavier Vignon Châteauneuf-du-Pape (1.5L)
Top Pick!
Xavier Vignon's greatest strength as a winemaker is his ability to establish long lasting and unique relationships with his partner winemakers and growers. For 25 some years, Vignon has made exciting and sumptuous modern wines but he has indulged in a few unique and interesting projects along the way. One such project is the "1972." From those long standing relationships he found a parcel of juice from a single domaine that had been cellared in concrete tanks for almost 50 years! For fans of history, this is something truly unique and special. Recen...

96 points James Suckling: "Lovely black-cherry, lavender and rose-petal character on the nose. Full body and firm, tight tannins that add structure and depth. Extremely long and intense. Excellent. " (09/2019) 92 points Vinous: "Dark soil, savory spice, and smoky mineral tones waft up from the glass, as Ferrero's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino draws me closer to find black raspberry and balsamic tones in a display which is ripe yet also grounded in the earth. On the palate, dark, fleshy textures give way to ripe black fruits, complemented by savory herbs,...

Joël Taluau is a fabulous grower in St. Nicolas de Bourgueil known for making some of the purest expressions of cabernet franc in the Loire. All is hand harvested, cuvees are based on vine age and soil composition. Then the wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel, with a light fining and no filtration before bottling.

100 points James Suckling: "Stunning depth, power, purity and elegance. The blackcurrants and plums are fresh and intense on the nose with blueberries and gently herbal notes, too. The palate has a keenly articulated array of vibrant tannins that hold long, fresh and pure. It invokes a sense of wonderment at the finish. So long and so pure. This blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc, is just at the start of a wonderful journey." (11/2018) 98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot,...

91 points James Suckling: "Big blackberry, chocolate and caramel nose with some spicy oak. This is a pretty bold wine on the palate, but the tannins are not out of line and the overall impression is of expansiveness rather than heaviness. Relatively supple finish. Drink or hold." (08/2018) K&L Notes: A longtime participant in the wine business, Miguel sold wine for wine distributors in the States as well as worked as an export manager. Miguel found success every step of the way, and then decided that rather than retire, he wanted to fulfill his dream o...

This easy-drinking vodka from the lovely little distillery in the town of the same name is a new twist on craft vodka. They begin by purchasing organic wheat and grape distillate. Then they ferment and distill their own rye and cracked red wheat. Each component is passed through their micro-column still separately before being blended to create a subtle yet distinctive meld of the four distillates. The whole lot is proofed down with deep well water from the property, which is fed by the Russian River tributary. The result is a vodka with a little bit of ...

2007 Malescasse, Haut-Medoc (1.5L)
Top Pick!
Jancis Robinson: "Already a bit of evolution on the nose! Sweet, Earl Grey tea character. Mild and with sufficient gentle fruit on the mid palate though pretty chewy on the finish. 16/20" (04/2008) K&L Notes: Château Malescasse is an historic property ideally situated on gravel soils close to the Gironde River just north of Margaux. While it is true that 2007 will never have the power or authority of the finest vintages of the decade, the best wines display a remarkable ripeness and an admirable richness of texture. These are medium to full-bodied reds...

2018 Realm "The Bard" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (1.5L)
Back In Stock!
98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2018 The Bard is beautiful and certainly in the same realm as the 2015 and 2016, both magical wines. This cuvée reveals a deep purple color followed by a beautiful perfume of crème de cassis, blackberries, roasted coffee, spring flowers, and violets. With incredible richness, no hard edges, and a blockbuster finish, this incredible wine offers serious opulence with no sensation of heaviness or weight. It's beautifully done and already complex and nuanced." (08/2020) 98 points Vinous: "The 2018 The Bard is fabulous and also o...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The rich, tannic 2015 Lirac Baron Louis spent a year in barrel, a year in tank and a year in bottle prior to release. It offers up scents of leather, cedar and vanilla, but it balances out the oak with dark fruit notes of cola, plum and spice. It's full-bodied and velvety on the palate, while hints of licorice emerge on the lengthy finish. This wine has clearly emerged as one of the top Liracs. (JC)" (11/2018) K&L Notes: An 88-acre estate, Château de Montfaucon sits just across the Rhône River from the esteemed...

94 points Decanter: "This small cooperative goes from strength to strength under the dynamic management of Aldo Vacca. Montestefano is one of the top sites in the commune of Barbaresco. The nose is still reserved, but there are rich red fruits lurking. Very concentrated on the palate, this is lush and approachable, although one senses there is much in reserve, with excellent ageing potential. It's taut and imposing, with a finish that's tangy and persistent. (SB)" (01/2020) 94 points Vinous: "The 2015 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano rounds out this ser...

2016 Castellare di Castellina "I Sodi di San Niccolò" Toscana (1.5L) (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
New!
98 points Vinous: "Castellare's I Sodi di San Niccolò is the single most overlooked high-end wine in Tuscany today. The 2016 picks up where the 2015 left off. A rush of inky dark fruit, lavender, spice, licorice, gravel, blueberry and menthol builds as the 2016 shows off its exceptional balance and pedigree. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2016 needs a few years in bottle to fully come together. Even so, the 2016 has been nothing less than spectacular on the two occasions I have tasted it so far. In a word: monumental. (AG)" (09/2020)

93 points James Suckling: "Opulence and richness come through here as well as a currant and berry character. Even so, there's an underlying firmness that gives this structure and energy." (12/2016) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Exhibits a rich, tapered core of dark berry, anise, cedar and loamy earth, with firm yet rounded tannins that support the fruit mix, giving this traction and depth. Drink now through 2028." 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Brandlin Estate (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) exhibits a dense purple color,...

98 points Wine Enthusiast: "This stellar, powerhouse wine is perfumed in aromas of pencil, leather and sage that season a core of mineral and crushed rock. The fruit is equally savory in currant and plum, with a dusting of dark chocolate. *Editors' Choice* (VB)" (11/2019) 92-95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Moving to the barrel samples, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a pretty, elegant wine that lacks the richness of the 2015 yet has perfumed notes of red and black currants, spring flowers, and spice. A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot that wa...

We met Marie Chauffray at the Vinifilles tasting in January of 2015 in Montpellier. The Vinifilles (which means "wine girls") is an association of women producers who own and operate their own estates. From growing to winemaking to marketing, they are involved in every aspect of their wineries' successes. I was invited by our friend Francoise Antech-Gazeau (our sparkling wine producer from the Limoux) to visit and taste her wines and meet some of her other grower-producer friends. Chauffray's was one of the most impressive wines we tasted at the event, a...

97 points James Suckling: "This is a pure and beautiful Brunello with super fine and abundant tannins that are comprehensive and expansive. Builds on the palate. Full body. Round and firm with beautiful fruit and length. Lively and vivid. From organically grown grapes. Needs a year or two to soften, but already gorgeous." (10/2019) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Castello Banfi 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura offers a distinct identity that is recognized by the natural thickness and density of the wine. Warm vintage condition...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Leading off the wines from Mendocino, the straight 2015 Pinot Noir Anderson Valley is terrific. Black raspberries, singed herbs, earth and sappy flower notes all emerge from this supple, textured 2015 that’s already a joy to drink. It’s certainly one of the more approachable in the lineup, yet like all the wines from this estate, it’s going to keep nicely for a decade due to its balance and classic style. This was a terrific lineup of 2015s from the team at Rhys. Across the board, these are tight and structured, with terrific con...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The silky 2016 Côtes du Rhône is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise. Cherries, garrigue and leather notes all come together in this medium to full-bodied but gentle, elegant wine. It's smooth from start to finish, with fine-grained tannins and hints of thyme that emerge on the finish. (JC)" (11/2018) Wine Spectator: "Gently mulled cherry and plum fruit glides through, with hints of warm fruitcake and melted red licorice. Offers a fruit-filled, modestly juicy finish. Drink now. (JM)" (11...

93 points Wine Spectator: "Broad and complex, delivering plum, black cherry, almond, leather and earth flavors. The tannins are dusty and well-integrated, while vibrant acidity keeps the flavors pumping through the long finish. (BS)" (08/2019) 92 points James Suckling: " A solid red with dusty, firm tannins and beautiful dark fruit and cedar undertones. Shows depth and intensity. Prefer in 2020 when the tannins and acidity will come together better, but already energetic and pretty. " (07/2019) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Here's a great...

91 points John Gilman: "These are still quite young vines, having only been planted in 2004, but it is quite clear that the Rhys team is keeping a tight rein on yields here and the 2010 Horseshoe syrah is outstanding. It is not quite as soil-driven as the 2010 Skyline syrah (this vineyard does not share the same limestone found at Skyline), but it is every bit as complex and impressive. I love its octane level of 12.8 percent. The superb nose offers up scents of cassis, grilled venison, black olive, pepper, a nice touch of syrah’s medicinal overtones, a ...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Coming from Mendocino County, the 2015 Chardonnay Anderson Valley offers a riper, slightly tropical style in its aromatics, possessing lots of caramelized pineapples, orange blossom, and honeysuckle nuances, with some toasty, nutty notes developing with time in the glass. With terrific mid-palate depth and fat on the palate, as well as bright acidity and a great finish, it’s what I call a Smoking Value! It’s already impossible to resist, with a rounded feel, yet I suspect it will keep for a decade nevertheless." (08/2017) 92 poi...

91 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is still very fresh with almost no secondary development on the nose and revealing ripe cherry, earth and game aromas followed by exuberant, rich, sweet and persistent flavors. While this is not particularly dense, the precision and minerality make for aA delicious effort that possesses none of the shortcomings of the '97 vintage. " (02/2004)
Price: $449.99

92 points John Gilman: "This is the first vintage of Anderson Valley Chardonnay that the winery has produced, and it is a very lovely wine that will drink well from its release. The bouquet is very floral and esthery, wafting from the glass in a lovely blend of pear, tangerine, fresh almond, white lilies, a hint of crème patissière, a nice base of soil and a very discreet framing of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very nicely generous on the attack, with fine focus and grip, a lovely core, bright acids and a long, complex an...

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good dark ruby; slightly hazy. Sappy aromas of black cherry, currant, espresso and earth. Silky and stuffed with fruit. Acidity (from the substantial Petit Verdot component?) is still a bit pronounced, but this wine has the sheer extract to harmonize with bottle aging. Quite powerfully structured and very long on the aftertaste, though not as subtle as the regular '96. (ST)" (06/1999)

This Gran Reserva is from some of their oldest Tempranillo and Graciano vines, planted in 1931 and 1946. It is elegant, generous and a precociously delicious treat for now, or over the next 15 years. Miguel Merino makes, as he likes to put it, an "updated classic" style of Rioja, all from his own 2 hectares of vines and several hectares of vineyards owned by a close friend. All the fruit is from sloped vineyards (Miguel is a fan of his slopes) within the cooler climate Rioja Alta town of Briones, which makes his wine a terrific showcase of the terroir (e...

Silver Oak was founded to focus on Cabernet Sauvignon in 1972 by entrepreneur Raymond Twomey Duncan and winemaker Justin Meyer, and makes two key wines based on their respective AVAs. The 2016 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with a combined 5% of the other Bordeaux varietals and was aged in American oak (50% new) from Silver Oak's own cooperage. A classic nose of cassis and bramble fruits along with vanilla, sage, and mint reverberate on the palate with a pop of red berry fruit. Graphite mineral and dusty tannins grace a medium-plus finish...

99 points James Suckling: "A great expression of cabernet sauvignon. Full-bodied with notes of crushed berries and nuts. Well balanced, with great quality to the tannins and pleasant acidity. The structure and texture are in harmony, leading to a long, flavorful finish. Shows wonderful length and beauty. Goes on and on. Needs at least five years to mellow. Try after 2025." (12/2020)

96 points Decanter: "This is deep, vinous and driving, chock full of fruity berry acidity. It’s really vibrant, with a subtle mineral seam and stalks that work well here, lending fragrance but without contributing hardness or astringency. It’s generous with a very long finish but not excessive - balanced and drinkable, but don't underestimate its ageing capacity. A selection of the oldest vines of the estate (65 to 115-years-old), organically grown on sandstone and marl, handpicked, whole-bunch fermented with indigenous yeasts and bottled without filtrat...

The Millet Sancerre has been a favorite here at K&L for a long time. Grown in limestone-clay soil, the wine reflects the terroir wonderfully. The flavors are bright with lime, mineral, passion fruit, and that wonderful chalkiness one wants from a Sancerre. This wine over delivers and pairs beautifully with oily seafood dishes and of course, your favorite cheeses.

2012 Haut-Brion Blanc, Pessac-Léognan (1.5L)

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine encompasses all the star qualities of white Bordeaux. Lemon and grapefruit tones are balanced by ripe yellow fruit and spicy toastiness. Everything is in harmony in this wine that is sure to age well. *Cellar Selection* (RV)" (05/2015) 96 points Wine Spectator: "This displays an impressive profile, with rich white peach, salted butter, macadamia nut, tangerine and warm brioche notes that show superior cut and definition, thanks to a terrific quinine accent that ripples on and on through the gorgeous finish. (07/2015) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The seductive 2012 Proprietary Red Bettina offers up a more Margaux-like femininity compared to the overwhelming power and richness of the Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is a blend sourc...

98 points James Suckling: "Intense stone and blackberry character. A kaleidoscope of flowers and berries. Herbs, too. Blueberries, blackberries and licorice. Lead pencil, too. Medium-to full-bodied, savory and juicy with big tannins. Gorgeous. To Kalon grandeur. Yes! " (01/2017) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Another 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer to Kalon Vineyard, coming from clones 4 and 337 from that famous first-growth Oakville vineyard of 90 acres. Remarkably, the Robert Mondavi winery still owns eve...

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon is another head-turning wine that defies the vintage. Coming from one of the benchmark sites in all of Napa as well as the world, it sports a deep purple hue as well as awesome notes of ripe black cherries, graphite, flowery incense, and violets. While the vineyard always seems to produce some of the most opulent and extroverted wines in the vintage, this beauty also has considerable elegance, silky tannins, and a great finish. It should continue drinking brilliantly for 20-25+ year...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "One can’t say enough about this winery, which may still fly under the radar of most consumers. The fully mature 2000 displays gorgeous aromas of camphor, lead pencil shavings, unsmoked tobacco, plums, and black currants. With full body, a velvety texture, and beautiful weight, richness, and length, this superb wine should evolve, possibly improve for another 15 years. It’s a beauty! 97 points International Wine Review: "The 2017 Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is absolutely fantastic, and one of the highlights of the entire vintage. 2017 presented its challenges, with hail, hot summer temperatures and wildfire, but Spottswoode was able to complete harvest before the fires began and they had no impact on the wines. The wine itself is composed of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 4% Merlot which spent 20 months in French oak (60% new). The result is a seductive wine that displays a wonderful combination of elegance a...

97-100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Lastly, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello is a rough blend at present and is 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, and 4% Cabernet Franc. This is a rich, powerful version of this cuvée and boasts a black/blue color as well as a huge nose of crème de cassis, graphite, crushed rocks, and lead pencil shavings. With some serious structure, full-bodied richness, and a fleshy, opulent texture, this massive Monte Bello is going to be one for the ages." 97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Château Sixtine is the finest vintage of this cuvée ever made, surpassing the 2003, 2007, and 2010. Deep purple/ruby-colored, with a full-bodied, deep, powerful bouquet of blackcurrants, ground pepper, crushed violets, and spice, it's full-bodied, has a voluptuous, powerful texture, sweet tannin, and a great, great finish, all while staying light and graceful. A blend of 50% Grenache and 25% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, it’s going to keep for two decades." (08/2018) 95 points Wine Spectator: "Sappy a...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Kathryn Hall from Napa is another blockbuster, exhibiting an opaque bluish purple color, notes of charcoal, graphite, blackberry, chocolate and exotic spices, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a long, long finish. Like most 2013s, it is just hinting at its ultimate potential, but this wine is loaded and exciting. Forget it for another 4-5 years and drink it over the following three decades. (RP)" (12/2016) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is made to highlight the vintage and best vin...

98 points Vinous: "The 2015 I Sodi di San Niccolò is just stratospheric. That's pretty much all there is to it. Plush, deep and explosive, the 2015 possesses magnificent depth. The 15% Malvasia Nera gives tannic backbone and energy to balance the wine's natural richness. Sweet red cherry, cedar, smoke, tobacco and licorice build in a racy, flamboyant Sodi that hits all the right notes. In a word: stunning! It’s a medium to full-bodied, elegant, classic wine that offers lots of darker fruits (cassis and blackberry), spice, new saddle leather, and leafy herbs as well as a kiss of damp earth. It has terrific balance and is going to keep for 15-20 years. The blend is 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and the rest...
