92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good dark ruby; slightly hazy. Sappy aromas of black cherry, currant, espresso and earth. Silky and stuffed with fruit. Acidity (from the substantial Petit Verdot component?) is still a bit pronounced, but this wine has the sheer extract to harmonize with bottle aging. Quite powerfully structured and very long on the aftertaste, though not as subtle as the regular '96. (ST)" (06/1999)

98 points Decanter: "This has to be one of the wines of the vintage. More deft and cedary than the bigger boned 1986 vintage (also tasted), this is light delicate and elegant. Again, ink and spice on the nose, with stunning cedar and blackcurrant fruit with a touch of undergrowth, graphite and cigar box. Beautifully fresh with sublime melting tannins. (JS)" (11/2015) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1996 Cos d'Estournel was aged in 65% new oak (unlike the 1995 which was 100%) and is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon ...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Duhart-Milon-Rothschild is aging in wonderful fashion, to wit, a straight down the fairway Pauilliac. Now at 20 years of age, it has developed a fresh and very brine-scented bouquet with plenty of undergrowth and bell pepper aromas. You could almost imagine a bit of Loire Cabernet Franc in here! The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip on the entry, impressive body and backbone, likewise more than enough freshness on the structured finish laced with white pepper and bell pepper. Very classic in sty...

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Spicy, meaty aromas are accented by a cool menthol streak. Toasty blackberrry fruit and bakery spices like anise and cinnamon play together happily on the palate. This is a classy blend, with coffee and a welcome herbal character brought on by 20% Cabernet Franc." (07/2000) Wine Spectator: "Intense, with rangy, sprawling black cherry, plum and wild berry fruit that's in definite need of short-term cellaring to come together. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. " (04/2000) Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cell...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The color is a dense ruby/black/purple. Reluctant aromas of blueberries, blackberries, minerals, flowers, truffles, and subtle new oak eventually emerge. Elegant on the attack, with sweet ripeness, and a delicate, concentrated richness, the hallmark of this wine is subtlety rather than flamboyance. A sweet mid-palate sets it apart from many of the uninspiring Ausones of the eighties and seventies. The wine is stylish, and presently understated, with tremendous aging potential. 91 points Wine Spectator: "Shopping for your cellar? Stash this California Cab away for the next two to ten years and you'll be rewarded. It's deliciously complex, with earth, cedar, plum, currant, black cherry and spice flavors, gaining depth and richness on the dry, firm finish. *Cellar Selection* (JL)" (06/1999)

93 points and a 'Highly Recommended' designation from the Wine Spectator... 'Spicy, floral and perfumed Cabernet, a late-release from the '96 vintage, showing off earthy, cedary black cherry and blackberry flavors, and pretty, toast- and vanilla-scented notes. Unusually supple and polished version of this wine. Drink now through 2007. 4,300 cases made. (Dec-2000)'

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Léoville-Las Cases is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc picked between 25 September and 10 October (for fascinating insight, read Robert Parker's remarks about the blend with Michel Delon in the original tasting note). Now at 20 years, it has evolved into an absolutely stunning Saint Julien, clearly one of the best wines from the estate this decade. The bouquet is beautifully defined with intense black cherries, cedar, mint and a touch of oyster shell that seems to gain...

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1996 Chateau Margaux, a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, must be a strong contender for wine of the vintage. It offers everything you desire from this First Growth. It is blessed with breathtaking delineation and freshness on the nose, understated at first and then blossoming with mineral-infused black fruit, hints of blueberry, crushed stone and violet. The palate is perfectly balanced with filigree tannin, perfect acidity, a wine where everything seems to ...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The dark ruby-colored 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley exhibits a pronounced smoky, espresso bean, and kirsch-scented nose. Round, dense, rich, full-bodied, and open-knit, its low acid flavors are undeniably appealing. Black olives make an appearance in the wine's aromatics as it sits in the glass." (01/2000)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I was shocked by how backward the 1996 Pontet-Canet was on the three occasions I tasted it in January. This wine possesses superb potential, but it appears a decade's worth of patience will be necessary. The color is a saturated dark purple. With coaxing, the wine offers aromas of black currant jam intertwined with minerals, sweet oak, and spice. A full-bodied wine, it possesses layered, concentrated, sweet fruit, with an elevated level of ripe tannin. (RP)" (04/1999) 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wi...

92-95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep, saturated ruby. Perfumed, superripe aromas of crystallized dark berries, roasted coffee and shoe polish. Subtle and extremely youthful, yet the inner-mouth aromatics and sweetness of fruit are already compelling. Very intensely flavored and solidly structured. Superb finishing fruit is more than a match for the wine firm but ripe tannins. Offers great potential. (ST)" (06/1998)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1996 Domaine de Chevalier certainly surpassed my expectations even though I would caution that I think Olivier Bernard has made better vintages since then. Deep in color, the nose is quite captivating with black fruit, brine and crushed stone. I like the strictness here -- very 1996 in style. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a svelte texture. The bead of acidity lends this tension although I found that finish surprisingly backward and just lacked that peacock's tail that would hav...

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1996 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (98VN, 97JD, 96RP, 92ST). Vinous: "Ridge's 1996 Monte Bello is an absolute stunner. The bouquet evokes a top Left Bank Bordeaux in a great vintage. Not surprisingly, the Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1996 is very high at 80%. Every bit as compelling on the palate, the 1996 simply exudes class. I am not sure words alone can capture just how vivid the wine is at twenty years of age. Graphite, smoke, tobacco, licorice and a core of dark fruit unfold on the palate as the 1996 shows off its pedigree. Readers lucky enough to own it can look forward to another two decades plus of exceptional drinking. The 1996 is an uber-classic, Médoc-leaning Monte Bello. What a wine! (AG)" (07/2016)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 Calon-Ségur, St-Estèphe (93ST, 92JG, 91RP). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby-red. Pure, highly perfumed aromas of black cherry, currant, plum, minerals, tobacco, leather and fresh herbs. Very ripe, suave and spicy; at once subtle and gripping. Lovely Cabernet character dominating today. Very firm, long finish is youthful but not hard-edged. Showing extremely well. (ST) 93+" (08/2002)

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (94JG, 93WS, 92RP, 92ST, 91JS). John Gilman: "The 1996 Haut Brion is less hermetically sealed than the 1998, and is beginning to hint a bit at its secondary layers of aromatic complexity, though it still remains a very young wine. The bouquet is deep and classic, as it jumps from the glass in a mélange of black cherries, dark berries, Cuban tobacco, incipient notes of the black truffles to come, and a fine base of Graves earth. I assume that the 1996 saw the same amount of new oak as the 1998, but there is little sign of the wood at the present time. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and very intense, with a quite powerful profile for Haut Brion. The wine is rock solid at the core and very tannic, though the tannins are ripe and well-integrated into the wine. The finish is very, very long and soil-driven, and this will clearly be one of the most powerful vintages of Haut Brion to emerge since the 1959. It will be superb, b
