Groundwork was launched by Rhône specialist Curt Schalchlin, who also founded Sans Liege, which focuses on Rhône-style blends made from fruit throughout the Central Coast. The goal for Groundwork is varietal wines that are approachable, transparent and seamless. The 2018 Groundwork Santa Barbara County Syrah is among our favorite Syrahs tasted this year. Syrah should be unabashedly peppery, dark hued, and a little tannic. This is as honest and balanced an expression of Syrah as you’ll find. Curt hasn’t polished away all of the character of the variety wi...

92 points Vinous: "Fresh and vibrant in the glass, with impeccable balance, the Cuadrilla is an absolutely delicious, vinous wine to drink now and over the next few years. Stolpman takes 10% of their profits from this wine and uses it to pay their vineyard staff (the cuadrilla) their year-end bonuses. Best of all, it's a fabulous value. (AG)" (08/2020) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This bottling was a pioneer in uplifting the education and funding of farmworkers when it began years ago, and the results keep getting better. Aromas of cooked plums, cracked...

Wine Enthusiast: "A bit shy on the nose, this bottling of a rarely seen Italian grape offers earthy and rocky aromas as well as very dark fruit. The palate is very mineral-driven, with crushed black-rock flavors, dried berry fruit and tightly wound tannins that leave the mouth coated. (MK)" (10/2018)

Winery notes: Rajat Parr and Pete Stolpman's esoteric collaboration is labeled "Combe" referring to the French word for a small sheltered valley within a vineyard. This is 100% Trousseau raised in neutral 500L French Oak puncheons. Fermented 2/3 of the Trousseau de-stemmed and 1/3 whole cluster. Lots were kept separate to taste the result of each and we decided the two complimented each other. The whole cluster portion granted a bit of structure and delicate savory notes to the pure juiciness of the de-stemmed wine.

Winery notes: Rajat Parr and Pete Stolpman's esoteric collaboration is labeled "Combe" referring to the French word for a small sheltered valley within a vineyard. Sometime around 2010, Raj became convinced of the great potential for the pale red Trousseau grape on the limestone soils of Stolpman Vineyards. A fine, tingly mousse - tiny bubbles that linger up the glass. The wine's pale straw color and Champagne-like head make it hard to believe these grapes were picked from the same vines as the funky fun Trousseau Red. While totally unique to the New Wor...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Based on 48% Syrah, 34% Petite Sirah, and the rest Graciano, the inky hued 2018 TATS has a beautiful nose of black and blue fruits, ground pepper, smoked game, and bouquet garni. Rich, full-bodied, and balanced on the palate, it's a rocking Rhône-like blend with loads of character." (08/2020) K&L Notes: Winery notes; The Central Coast of California is vast and beautiful, marked by geological and climatic diversity. From sandy sea swept coastal regions of Los Alamos and Edna Valley to the warmer, limestone covered hills of Ballar...

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 2016 The Third Twin (Sine Qua Non) "Nuestra Señora del Tercer Gemelo" Central Coast Red Blend (OWC - 99RP, 98JD, 95VN) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "'I had never really liked Mourvedre,' Manfred mentioned during our tasting. 'But the more I worked with it, the more I liked it. There is some synchronicity that takes place when you blend it.' Apart from being a Mourvedre-dominant blend, the other unusual thing about this wine is that this is only the second wine to be 100% from The Third Twin Vineyard--a vineyard in Los Alamos purchased by Manfred and Elaine in 2000. Not to be confused with some new Central Coast plantings of what turned out to be Graciano, Manfred explained that this is Mourvedre Clone 'S,' sourced from John Alban. Composed of 53% Mourvedre, 16% Syrah, 14% 14% Grenache, 9% Petit Sirah, 6% Graciano and 2% Viognier, 42% of whole clusters were used and the rest was destemmed. It spent around 31 months in French oak barrels, 4
