2014 Varner "Hidden Block - Spring Ridge Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir (Previously $45) (Previously $45)
Top Pick!
93 points Vinous: "The 2014 Pinot Noir Hidden Block is the most immediate and dense of the four Pinots in the Varner range. A core of sweet red cherry and plum fruit fills out the wine's mid-weight frame effortlessly. Round, pliant and totally seductive, the 2014 has a lot to offer, including tons of near and medium-term appeal. (AG)" (08/2018) 92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Mostly destemmed and brought up in 25% new French oak, the medium ruby-colored 2014 Pinot Noir Hidden Block Spring Ridge Vineyard reveals a medium ruby color as well as impressive red and...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A lively, fresh, floral, peppery and berry-fruited effort, the 2014 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains (one-third whole cluster) from the team at Fogarty is medium-bodied, elegant and impeccably put together. It opens up nicely with time in the glass, has nicely integrated acidity and clean, classy feel that will drink nicely for 4-5 years. (JD)" (10/2016) Connoisseurs Guide: "Fairly outgoing and smelling of red cherries and strawberries with accents of sweet baking spice and a slight savory touch of herbs off to ...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "There is a sharply mineral focus to the nose of this bottling, which shows aromas of wet gravel alongside lemon peel, lemon blossoms and a touch of ripe nectarine. It's very grippy on the palate, where chalky texture and flavors unveil lemon pith, river water and kumquat flavors. (MK)" (07/2019) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Chardonnay Bald Mountain Vineyard comes from 27-year-old vines planted at 920-1,050 feet. Grapes were harvested September 20 and it aged in 20% new French oak. The nose opens with sc...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "This bottling from a coastal vineyard planted in 2008 is fresh and bursting on the nose with raspberry, dark red-currant, roasted oak and sagebrush aromas. There's a wide herbal array to the palate, from marjoram to bay leaf, set against a raspberry, pomegranate and hibiscus backdrop. *Cellar Selection* (MK)" (07/2019)

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Moving south toward the Santa Cruz Mountains, the 2016 Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard offers a more elegant, medium-bodied, supple style as well as perfumed red fruit, dried flowers, and spice, with just a hint of minerality. This site has slightly more clay in the soils and the wine is always one of the more rounded and charming in the lineup. Nevertheless, I’ve no doubt it’s going to drink nicely for a decade." (02/2019) 94 points Vinous: "The 2016 Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard is beautifully lifted and precise. Bright red ...

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beauregard Ranch is all Cabernet Sauvignon that was brought up in 20% new barrels. Its medium ruby/purple color is followed by a beautiful bouquet of blackcurrants, vanilla bean, graphite, tobacco leaf, and bay leaf. It's medium to full-bodied, has a layered, seamless profile, good acidity, and a classic, balanced, age-worthy style. This will be loved by old-school Cabernet lovers and is a beautiful wine that's going to keep for 2-3 decades. " (02/2019) 91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Vivacious aromas of ...

Winemaker's Notes: "The grapes were hand harvested at 22.8° Brix. During the fermentation 25% whole clusters were used and the rest was de-stemmed. Indigenous yeasts and bacteria carried out both primary and secondary fermentations. The wine was aged in 25% New French oak for 18 months. Note that relatively speaking 18 months in barrel is a long ageing time for pinot noir. Regan vineyard is in the cooler area of the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA which lends to a pinot noir with high acidity, extended barrel ageing is needed to calm the wine down and get it ...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate comes from the Santa Cruz Mountain estate, and it follows its big brother Monte Bello's style with a terrific sense of elegance paired with richness. Lots of crème de cassis, crushed violets, vanilla, tobacco leaf, and cedar notes flow to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, layered Cabernet Sauvignon that has terrific purity, building tannins, and a great finish. It offers pleasure today yet won't hit prime time for another 5-7 years, and it's going to evolve for 15-20 years (proba...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "The nose on this bottling blends savory depth with floral lightness, combining sandalwood, seared Meyer lemon peels, butterscotch, hot sandstone and flashes of honeysuckle on the nose. Sea salt and nectarine lead toward marshmallow and wood in the finish, wrapped in a structure that's firm but seamless. (MK)" (10/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Chardonnay Estate opens with red pear and apple, spring honey, hay and fresh almonds with hints of orange blossom, lemon pith, stone, toast and white peaches....

95 points Decanter: "The rocky minerality of the region shows from first sniff through to the lengthy finish. The earthiness is beautifully offset by fleshy red and black fruit, with spice-infused cherry, bittersweet chocolate, espresso and vanilla notes. For all its youthful intensity, the palate is remarkably fresh and bright. Drinking Window 2023 - 2035 (LM)" (07/2018) 94 points Vinous: "Mount Eden's Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the hidden gems, not just in the Santa Cruz Mountains, but in wine more broadly. The 2015 is bold, deep and pungent, with ...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains is an excellent introduction to the house style. Floral aromas lead to layers of dark red fruit in this juicy, accessible Pinot. This is the least expensive Pinot in this lineup but it offers terrific balance, and shows no ill effects whatsoever of being tasted among the vineyard-designate bottlings. Fleshy, supple and wonderfully radiant, it will also drink better young than most, if not all, of those wines. The Santa Cruz Mountains is made from barrels that didn’t make i...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2015 Chardonnay Estate comes all from the estate vineyard and mostly from a block of vines planted in 1990. Aged in 50% new oak, it’s another brilliant Chardonnay from Jeffrey Patterson that has a rich, concentrated, classic style as well as ample honeyed minerality, orchard fruits, and hints of brioche and toasted spice. Pure, medium to full-bodied and impeccably balanced, you can enjoy bottles today or cellar for 10-15 years, if you’re so inclined." (02/2019) 93 points John Gilman: "The 2015 Chardonnay from Mount Eden Vine...

From the producer: "A cuvee of our highest end Cabernet vineyards and barrels. Each lot is destemmed, 100% whole berry and hand sorted. Isolated ferments are cold soaked for 5 days, inoculated in open top fermenters with commercial strains, and kept on skins up to 25 days via extended maceration. Aged in a combination of high end French and Hungarian oak for 18 months with 100% native malolactic fermentation, the best barrels are carefully selected, benched and compiled. Racked once to tank and gravity feed to bottle."

Betwixt Wines are makers of wines produced in small lots in San Francisco. Their goal is to create authentic wines that are defined by nature, not humans. By leaving behind preconceptions about what great wines are, they free themselves to create wines that are truly expressive of time and place. Minimalist winemaking techniques are central to their overall approach. Winemaker Tim Telli does as little as possible to the grapes and allows native fermentations to take place after cold soaking periods of up to a week. Wines are gently pressed and then lef...

Winery notes: "Rich. Smooth. Earthy. Intense notes of black cherry and strawberry. Luxurious French oak aromas. Classic mountain-grown fruit acidity, balanced perfectly. Weight on the palate and a long finish. This is Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir. Suggested food pairings include grilled salmon, pork chops and roasted duck."

95 points Vinous: "The 2014 Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard bristles with energy. Rose petal, mint, white pepper and blood orange give the Alpine its super-appealing aromatic upper register, but there is plenty of depth lurking beneath. Here the flavors are bright and nicely focused, while the richness of the vintage is mostly felt in the dense, potent finish. (AG)" (07/2016) 94 points John Gilman: "The 2014 Alpine Vineyard Pinot Noir from Rhys is another outstanding young bottle of Pinot, with its whole clusters showing a bit today, but all of the constitu...

David Bruce's Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot comes from the winery's estate vineyard, with some supplemental fruit sourced from nearby family-owned vineyards that benefit from the same cooling Pacific Ocean influences. There's a lot of dense black cherry fruit on the nose, with brighter red cherry, baking spice, black pepper, mineral and forest floor developing in the glass with some air. Much of the fruit carries over to the palate, which has nutty and minerally overtones, soft tannins and solid acidity.

If you haven’t yet heard about or tasted the wines from Cole Thomas at Madson, that’s likely because they are so tiny, many of their wines are just a barrel or two! In fact, if you look on their website, almost everything is sold out! However, once you have tasted their wines, you won’t quickly forget them. I think this young winery is crafting some of the most exciting wines in the region. Doing his apprenticeship under Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard’s winemaking legend, Jeff Emery, Cole Thomas makes his Madson bottlings in the same cellar, on Ingalls S...

93 points John Gilman: "The 2011 Family Farm bottling has come in a tad less ripe than the Home Vineyard (12.8 percent alcohol versus 13-2 percent- both very, very civilized octane numbers in my book!) and as a result the wine is even a touch more red fruity and soil-driven in this vintage. The gorgeously complex nose offers up scents of cherries, beetroot, pomegranate, a great, complex base of soil, vinesmoke, a touch of nutskin, fresh herbs and a lovely, discreet framing of new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and very transpar...

Winemaker's Notes: "This Santa Cruz Mountain Chardonnay is sourced from PM Staiger Vineyard. Planted in 1967, Paul and Margery Staiger have made this own-rooted Wente Clone Chardonnay for 44 years. In 2016, they turned over the farming to Madson and gave us the privilege to make this amazing vineyard into wine. This 2 acre vineyard lies on a rugged hillside in Boulder Creek. The soil is decomposed Monterey schist giving the wine a savory salinity and chalky texture. Immense diurnal shifts helps to retain acidity in the grapes. Once harvested, the fruit i...

93 points Wine & Spirits: "Jon Locke and Alex Krause pull this wine from a 90-year-old own-rooted vineyard just outside the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA. It’s a pleasure to taste over the course of a few days, starting out tart and crunchy, then filling out as dramatically as a spinnaker sail as it takes on air. Taut and generous at once, it’s refreshing and delicious." (06/2019) K&L Notes: Alex Krause and John Locke founded Birichino with a singular purpose - to make expressive wines of character from some of California's premier plots of cool-climate anc...

William Kelley writes: "The gregarious and dedicated Richard Alfaro is quietly making some very good Pinot Noir and Chardonnay at his Corralitos winery, and his modest prices make these true values in the world of California wine. Readers may already know his work, as he's the farmer of Trout Gulch Vineyard, source of Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay and Pinot Noir for Sonoma County-based labels such as Kutch, Ceritas and Arnot-Roberts. But his own wines are well worth a look and come warmly recommended."

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Chardonnay was aged a year in 20% new French oak barrels and an additional six months in stainless steel. It opens to aromas of toast and baklava—pistachio, honey and pastry—with notes of oats, Golden Delicious apple and baked quince. The palate is medium-bodied, rounded and savory, lifted by citrusy accents and tangy acidity, finishing long, savory and textured. Yum! (EB)" (02/2020) 90 points Wine & Spirits: "Rich and toasty, this wine’s smoky notes and baked-apple flavors meet some tense malic acidit...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Pinot Noir has a pale to medium ruby-purple color and notions of eucalyptus, forest floor, cool blueberries, raspberry and sweet strawberry preserves with prosciutto, faint hints of dried herbs, wild blackberries and an orange peel note. The palate is light to medium-bodied with an intense core of perfumed fruit, a soft, grainy frame and juicy acidity, finishing with pretty berry notes. Winemaker's notes: "The grapes were hand harvested at 21.5° Brix. The fermentations of this wine were carried out by indigenous yeast and bacteria. It was quite tricky this time around though, it took over two weeks for the juice to start kicking off. One barrel finally started fermenting then some of juice from that barrel was used to inoculate the rest of the barrels. The fermentation of these barrels was not climate controlled in order to blow off fruity esters and lend to a more esoteric white wine. This wine only went through partial malolactic ferm...

After ten years of studying the history, geography, climate and geology of the Monterey Bay area through their P’tit Paysan and La Marea labels, Ian and Heather Brand started I. Brand & Family to showcase the truly unique vineyard blocks in the region- Santa Cruz Mountains, Monterey, and San Benito- which they believe will define their region. These wines are made with special regard for site, intended to intensely showcase place, and each site was selected because of its special location, match of variety to place, and relationship with the history and/...

Winemaker's Notes: "A blend of Chardonnay from several vineyards, each in its own distinct micro-climate within the appellation. The wine was barrel- fermented and aged sur lie in Burgundian oak for ten months. This wine displays all the classic Santa Cruz Mountains regional character and complexity for which this area is famous. in 2018 a very long, temperate growing season resulted in fruit that was harvested at an average of 23.7 Brix. Bold with bright flavors and aromas of pineapple, juicy, crisp Pippin apple and mountain pear. Burgundian styled pala...

94 points Vinous: "The 2010 Pinot Noir (San Mateo County) is simply fabulous. Rich dark cherries, crushed flowers, mint and spices burst from the glass. This is a hugely delicious wine from Rhys. The 80% whole clusters are nicely balanced by the sheer depth of the fruit. This is a flat out stunning wine from Rhys. In 2010 the San Mateo is the entry-level Pinot. The 2010 is bottled under San Mateo appellation, as it includes fruit from Bearwallow (in Anderson Valley) rather than the more typical collection of sites from the Santa Cruz Mountains. Once agai...

About this producer: "Bargetto Winery has produced hand-crafted wines in the Santa Cruz Mountains since 1933 and specializes in estate grown varietals from our Regan Estate Vineyard in the Santa Cruz Mountains, overlooking the beautiful Monterey Bay. The mountainous, cool climate region is host to low-yielding vineyards which produce wines of richness and intensity. Bargetto Winery produces Pinot Noir, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and several Italian varietals."

Winemaker notes: "The 2018 Reserve Chardonnay is a blend of two clones of Chardonnay from our estate vineyard. Clone 4 tends to be ripe and rich, with tropical fruit characteristics. The Mount Eden Clone expresses more minerality and vibrant acidity. Each barrel is carefully tasted and rated, and only the very best barrels make the Reserve blend. Pleasant aromas of butterscotch and caramel dominate the nose, with hints of citrus and stone fruits underneath. Lime zest, green apple, and various tropical fruit notes are present on the palate. A health...

94 points Vinous: "The 2015 Pinot Noir is fabulous. The decision to use 50% whole clusters, almost by necessity in 2015, resulted in a Pinot that is both rich in fruit and also aromatically lifted, not to mention also quite a bit more expressive of this site and the Santa Cruz Mountains more broadly. Deep and plush, as the wines from this site can be, but not at all heavy, Mindego Ridge's 2015 Pinot Noir is a total knock out. The saline-infused finish offers a compelling counter to the intense, pliant fruit. The whole clusters are very nicely integrated,...

95 points Vinous: "The 2016 Chardonnay Monte Bello is a powerful wine. Rich, deep and layered, the 2016 offers a striking mélange of varietal fruit and structure. Tangerine, mint, butter and toasty notes all develop in the glass. More than anything, though, the 2016 is a wine of texture and resonance. I loved it. (AG)" (10/2019) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Chardonnay Monte Bello aged 18 months in 86% American and 14% French oak, using one-year-old to five-year-old barrels. It's open and giving on the nose with aromas of lemon pit...

95 points John Gilman: "The 2012 Skyline pinot noir from Rhys is utterly spectacular. The magical nose soars from the glass in a blaze of cherries, very complex minerality, pomegranate, mustard seed, a touch of orange zest, beetroot, woodsmoke, gamebirds, a touch of lavender and a very sophisticated framing of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and intensely flavored, with a lovely core of fruit, moderate tannins, nascent complexity and a very, very long, tangy and laser-like finish. This is a brilliant bottle of young pinot noir...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A step up over the Anderson Valley release, the 2016 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains Alesia gets fruit from five of the six single vineyards (no Skyline fruit) and it offers a sensational bouquet of ripe cherries, currants, rose petals, conifer trees, and sappy flowers. Complex, medium-bodied, elegant, and seamless, it’s a beautiful, beautiful wine that unquestionably plays in the same league as the single vineyards." (02/2019) 91 points John Gilman: "The 2016 Santa Cruz Mountains bottling under the Alesia label is also nicely c...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Chardonnay Santa Cruz Mountains Alesia has a touch more depth in its aromas and flavors, offering a ripe bouquet of citrus blossom, honeysuckle, peach, and orange blossoms. Medium-bodied, rounded, and layered, with a terrific mid-palate, it packs plenty of muscle while staying beautifully balanced. Drink it over the coming 7-8 years." (10/2019) 92 points John Gilman: "The 2017 Santa Cruz Mountains bottling of chardonnay from Alesia is just a whisper riper than the superb Anderson Valley cuvée, but still very civilized a...

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Lastly, the 2016 Chardonnay Damiana Vineyard comes from a rocky site located just beside the estate, and it’s one of the more exotic and complex wines in the lineup. Revealing lots of minerality as well as tart citrus and tropical fruit characteristics, it’s medium bodied, has vibrant acidity, good mid-palate depth, and terrific balance. This classic Chardonnay is going to benefit from a year in bottle and it should age gracefully giving it vibrancy." (02/2019) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The most generous and text...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: ""It's very unusual for us to release this so early," Jeffrey Patterson explains. "We are releasing it sooner than usual because it's a great value for wine lists, sort of our mid-appellation wine." This vintage, the blend is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petite Verdot and 1% Malbec. Medium to deep ruby, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon has a very minerally nose of crushed stone, dusty earth, warm red cherries, woodsmoke and savory/herbal hints with notions of charcuterie, warm blackberries,...

94 points Vinous: "Orange rind, graphite, pine, mint and crushed rocks jump from the glass in the 2012 Pinot Noir Home Vineyard. One of the more vibrant, chiseled wines in the range, the Home will benefit from further time in bottle. The translucent, crystalline finish is a thing of beauty. In this vintage, the Home was done with 100% whole clusters. Quite remarkably, the Home Vineyard lies just 400 yards away from Family Farm, separated by the San Andreas Fault, yet the wines from these two sites are completely different. One of California's benchmark estate's for Pinot Noir, Calera is now part of Duckhorn Wines portfolio of exceptional estates. According to the winery, "(the) Mt. At an average elevation of 2,200 feet it is among the highest and coolest vineyard sites in California."

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "'I want this to be an appellation wine,' Jeffrey Patterson says. 'This is a blend of all the Chardonnay we grow at Domaine Eden plus some declassified fruit from our Mount Eden estate, about 35% this vintage.' The 2016 Chardonnay Estate features aromas of acacia, honeyed apples, wet stone, white peach and lemon pith with notions of cheese rind and straw. Medium-bodied, it's very lively in the mouth with savory fruits, juicy acidity and a long, energetic and lightly textured finish. (EB)" (02/2020) 92 points Win...

From the winery: "A 50/50 blend of two personalities of syrah: the extremely cool-climate and coastal Gali vineyard, and the warmer, high elevation Zayante vineyard. These components come together to exude the spicy, floral, and feminine side of syrah. Gali is located in the Corralitos sub-district of the southern Santa Cruz Mountains. At the low elevation of 400 feet and approximately six miles from the ocean, this is one of the coolest sites in our lineup. Soils are clay loam weathered from sandstone and shale, formed on ancient submarine terraces. Tho...

95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid ruby-red. Intensely perfumed, mineral-driven red berry, blood orange and potpourri aromas are complemented by deeper-pitched notes of cola and smoky Indian spices. Sweet, focused and light on its feet, offering intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a silky, seamless texture. The mineral quality comes back on the endless finish, which is strikingly pure, focused and gently tannic. I was reminded of a high-end Chambolle-Musigny when I tasted this balanced but intensely flavored wine and...

2018 Sante Arcangeli "Integrato" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Pinot Noir Integrato is a barrel selection aged ten months in 20% new French oak. It's pale to medium ruby with lovely scents of rose petals, strawberry and raspberry preserves, rhubarb, pomegranate and crushed red and black cherries with accents of loam, peppercorn and prosciutto. Medium-bodied, it explodes with red berries flavors and oodles of earthy accents. It has a grainy texture and excellent freshness, finishing long and very flavorful. Yes!
