98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "There are three monumental wines in the lineup and the 2016 Pinot Noir Alpine Hillside is one of them. Slightly deeper colored, it tastes like the straight Alpine release, but with the intensity turned all the way up. Thrilling notes of white flowers, forest floor, crushed rocks, and both red and black fruits give way to a medium to full-bodied Pinot Noir that has perfect balance and a layered, powerful, yet incredibly elegant style on the palate. It’s one of the finest Pinot Noir to come from these magical terroirs just south of ...

95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "An exceptionally densely fruited nose that is intensely floral and nuanced with stone, spice and soft earth hints complements to perfection the impressively concentrated medium weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract such that the very firm tannins are rendered almost invisible at present though I suspect that they will become more visible as the baby fat recedes. This broad-scaled effort should age for up to a decade and last several more. Magnificent. The estate wines of Rhys Vineyards are made from biodynami...

94 points John Gilman: " The Skyline Vineyard pinot noir from Kevin Harvey and his team at Rhys is just stellar in 2011, with its low octane personality (12.6 percent ABV!) delivering great minerality and nascent complexity on both the nose and palate. The wonderfully complex nose offers up a 'cool fruit' profile of cherries, beetroot, stony minerality, a touch of menthol, thyme, a bit of mustard seed, vinesmoke and a gentle base of new wood. On the palate the wine is pure, fullish and very intensely flavored, with a fine core of fruit, suave, seamless t...

95 points John Gilman: "The 2012 Skyline pinot noir from Rhys is utterly spectacular. The magical nose soars from the glass in a blaze of cherries, very complex minerality, pomegranate, mustard seed, a touch of orange zest, beetroot, woodsmoke, gamebirds, a touch of lavender and a very sophisticated framing of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and intensely flavored, with a lovely core of fruit, moderate tannins, nascent complexity and a very, very long, tangy and laser-like finish. This is a brilliant bottle of young pinot noir...

94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "This is also gorgeously layered and brilliantly complex with a stunning nose of rose petal, violet, red and blue pinot fruit and perhaps the most overt mineral-influence of any wine in the group and this aspect can also be found on the beautifully textured, refined and pure flavors that are an exercise in balance and harmony. In sum, a wine of class and grace that in 10 years may ultimately prove to be as good as the Horseshoe. *Oustanding*" (10/2010) 94 points John Gilman: " And the pinot from the “filet section” ...

2015 Calera "Mills" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir (1.5L)
New!
95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Less than one-third of a ton per acre came off of this nearly 35-year-old vineyard from this drought-addled vintage, but what made it to bottle is quite amazing. Aromas of earthy thyme, sagebrush, wild black cherry and cocoa are layered and elegant. The palate is rich and thoroughly engaging in flavors of roasted tomato, mulberry and purple flower. (MK)" (02/2019) 94 points Wine & Spirits: "From a southeast-facing parcel planted on limestone in the mid-1980s, this feels warmer than the wine from Ryan (also recommended in thi...

2016 Rhys "Horseshoe Hillside" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
Back In Stock!
99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "One of the highlights in this report is unquestionably the 2016 Pinot Noir Horseshoe Vineyard Hillside, which is in the running for one of the greatest Pinot Noirs I’ve ever tasted from California. A thrilling bouquet of blackcurrants, crushed rocks, chocolate, and Asian spices all flow to a rich, powerful wine that doesn’t pull any punches with regard to depth of fruit or structure. While most 2016s have some upfront charm and accessibility, that’s not the case here, and this needs a solid 4-5 years of bottle age. It’s a magical ...

94 points Allen Meadows - Burghound: "A ripe, pure and airy nose of black cherry and cassis aromas trimmed in obvious floral notes that can also be found on the extremely fresh and energetic, serious and dense flavors that carry an intense minerality over to the robust, powerful and very firmly structured finish that seems to go on and on without end. This stunning effort is a clear candidate for 'wine of the vintage' honors though patience is absolutely required." (10/2009) 94 points Vinous: "Pale violet color. Drop-dead gorgeous aromas of raspberry, ...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard has a touch of darker fruit in its strawberry, cassis, dusty soil and earthy bouquet. This flows to a beautifully textured, seamless Pinot Noir that has sound underlying structure, medium plus-bodied richness and a great finish. Possessing both fruit and structure, it should be accessible for all of its life. (JD)" (10/2015) 94 points Vinous: "Sweet red cherry, plum, mint, spice and expressive floral notes form a super-appealing backdrop of aromas and flavors in the 2013 Pino...

95 points Vinous: "The 2014 Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard bristles with energy. Rose petal, mint, white pepper and blood orange give the Alpine its super-appealing aromatic upper register, but there is plenty of depth lurking beneath. Here the flavors are bright and nicely focused, while the richness of the vintage is mostly felt in the dense, potent finish. (AG)" (07/2016) 94 points John Gilman: "The 2014 Alpine Vineyard Pinot Noir from Rhys is another outstanding young bottle of Pinot, with its whole clusters showing a bit today, but all of the constitu...

95 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Ruby-red. Explosively perfumed cherry-cola, dark berry liqueur, incense and mineral aromas show superb clarity and depth, with a sexy floral quality building with air. Offers palate-staining black raspberry and spicecake flavors that become sweeter and deeper with air. This rich but strikingly lithe and tensile pinot deftly plays power and depth off of vivacity and finishes sweet, youthfully tannic and extremely long. One of the most impressive Pinots I've tasted from the New World, or Burgundy for t...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Coming from a small, east-facing section of the Alpine Vineyard and very chalky soils, the 2014 Pinot Noir Swan Terrace is an impeccably balanced, complete Pinot Noir that has everything you could want from the grape. Gorgeous red and black fruits, roasted herbs, smoked earth and spice all jump from the glass of this seamless red that has polished tannin (and plenty of them), a layered, balanced profile and no shortage of length. Like all of these 2014s, it needs short-term cellaring and will have two decades of ...

Bid on this 7-bottle lot of 1995-1996 Calera "Jensen Vineyard" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir Half-Bottle Vertical, including 5-bottles of 1995 Calera "Jensen Vineyard" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir (375ml) (96VN) and 2-bottles of 1996 Calera "Jensen Vineyard" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir (375ml) (92VN, 90RP). Of the 1995 Calera "Jensen Vineyard" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir (375ml),Vinous writes: "The 1995 Pinot Noir Jensen Vineyard is one of the real stand outs in this tasting. An intensely aromatic, perfumed Pinot, the 1995 Jensen is pure silk on the palate. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint and dried rose petal are some of the signatures. The 100% whole clusters are evident, but also deeply expressive and balanced throughout. A host of orange peel, autumn leaves and savory herbs lend an air of Vosne-Romanée-like exoticism to the finish. What a gorgeous wine this is. (AG)" (09/2015)

Bid on this bottle of 1984 Mount Eden "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir (92VN). Vinous: "The 1984 Pinot Noir is another wine that has aged impeccably. Sage, menthol, pine and dried cherry confer notable freshness. Like the 1985, the 1984 is a wine of reserve more than power, with veins of supporting tannin that give persistence and a lovely sense of proportion. (AG)" (12/2019)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2009 & 2012 Rhys "Alpine Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Tasting Lot, including 1-bottle of 2009 Rhys "Alpine Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir (95RP, 94JG, 93BH, 92ST) and 1-bottle of 2012 Rhys "Alpine Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay (96JG, 96RP, 94ST, 94VN, 90WS). Of the 2012 Rhys "Alpine Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay,Robert Parker's Wine Advocate writes: "The 2012 Chardonnay Alpine Vineyard is absolutely stunning! Giving up incredible notes of flinty minerality, green citrus, lemon curd and exotic flowers, this beautiful Chardonnay builds on the palate, with medium to full-bodied richness, vibrant acidity and a clean, laser-focused finish that just keeps going. It continues to gain in richness with time in the glass, yet never loses its classy, pure and elegant demeanor. It should benefit from a year or more in the cellar and have a decade or more of prime drinking after that. (JD)" (04/2015)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2012 Rhys "Alpine Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir (95ST, 94VN, 93JG, 93RP, 92BH). Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Vivid ruby-red. Intensely perfumed, mineral-driven red berry, blood orange and potpourri aromas are complemented by deeper-pitched notes of cola and smoky Indian spices. Sweet, focused and light on its feet, offering intense raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a silky, seamless texture. The mineral quality comes back on the endless finish, which is strikingly pure, focused and gently tannic. I was reminded of a high-end Chambolle-Musigny when I tasted this balanced but intensely flavored wine and suspect that it will age slowly and gracefully over at least the coming decade. (ST)" (05/2014)
