Vinous: "The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles shows just how appealing the vintage is. Aging in steel and bottling early brings out the aromatic, juicy side of Cabernet. The 2016 is not exactly complex, but it is absolutely delicious. It will make a terrific house pour over the next few years. (AG)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: Wine Advocate: "Readers looking for killer values need look no further than this Foxglove releases from Jim and Bob Varner." (JD, 10/2016) Great wines at very good prices. That is what you get from Foxglove. This is a side project fr...

Josh Raynolds writes: "Established in 1981, Adelaida is one of Paso Robles’ oldest high-end wineries. Quality continues to climb and, in my opinion, has never been better. With 168 acres of vines spread across seven mostly high-altitude sites, Adelaida has always had the potential to make some of the best wines of the region. I first noticed an uptick in complexity and balance in the wines in the early 2000s, and things accelerated with the arrival of winemaker Jeremy Weintraub in 2012, after a stint at Seavey, in Napa Valley. While the entry-level wines...

Wine Enthusiast: "Broad aromas of caramelized red cherry and dried herbs make for a pleasantly savory entry to this bottling from the historic estate. There is a solid amount of herbal expression on the palate, where the dried oregano sets off the tangy black-plum flavors. (MK)" (04/2019)

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The Zinfandel-dominated 2017 Westberg Red (which includes 24% Tempranillo) is another saturated purple-colored effort from winemaker Don Burns that offers an earthy, meaty bouquet of black fruits, plums, Asian spices, flowers incense, and blood orange. It's ripe, sexy, rounded, and just a beautiful drink. I’d be thrilled to have bottles in the cellar." (10/2019) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A blend of 76% Zinfandel and 24% Tempranillo aged 22 months in 60% new oak, the medium ruby-purple colored 2017 Westberg Red is...

Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Foxglove Zinfandel (which includes 14% Petite Sirah) has a fruit-forward, ripe, textured style as well as classic notes of plums, leafy herbs, and Asian spices. It's another solid, enjoyable effort from this estate." (10/2019) Vinous: "The 2016 Zinfandel is a fresh, fruity wine to drink now and over the next few years. Juicy black cherry, leather, spice, menthol and cedar add character to this exuberant, racy Zinfandel. This is an especially floral, mid-weight style. 97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Claude's Cuvée is an interesting blend of 52% Syrah, 22% Grenache, 10% Mataro, 8% Tempranillo, and 8% Carignan that was raised mostly in French oak. It offers a more earthy, meaty bouquet of spiced black fruits, cedarwood, leafy herbs, and herbed meat. Beautifully textured and full-bodied, it offers ripe, polished tannins and a great, great finish. It ranks with the best of the best and will cruise for a decade in cool cellars." 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The medium to deep ruby colored 2017 Claude's Cuvée...

2017 Harvey & Harriet (Booker) Paso Robles Red Blend (Elsewhere $50) (Elsewhere $50)
Top Pick!
95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Named after winemaker Eric Jensen's parents, the 2017 Harvey and Harriet is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah, and the rest Petit Verdot and Malbec. It offers a richer, powerful style as well as Napa Cabernet-like notes of black and blue fruits, scorched earth, crushed rocks, and violets. Rich, full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, and voluptuous on the palate, it's more approachable than the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, but I wouldn't bet against it aging just as long." 91 points Vinous: "Pale gold. Mineral-accented orange, pear and white flowers on the perfumed nose, along with a gingery nuance that adds spicy lift. Taut citrus and orchard fruit flavors unfurl slowly and show hints of bitter quinine and anise that build slowly with air. Shows very good depth as well as energy on the finish, which echoes the mineral and citrus fruit notes. Andrew Jones learned to make wine from the ground up. He started as a vine nursery fieldman, planting and planning vineyards for wineries all over California. This gave him firsthand knowledge of nearly every vineyard on the Central Coast and a knack for finding "diamonds in the rough." Meanwhile, he was building friendships with some great California growers, who'd often offer him small lots of their best grapes on the side. From these beginnings he has built a catalog of delicious, affordable wines that hum with personality.

The winery says of the vintage: "Black cherry and cinnamon on the nose with images of sugar plum fairies dancing through your head. Some hints of black tea and plum skin as you take your first sip, leaving you grateful for Paso’s precious Zin."

2017 Booker "Vertigo" Paso Robles Rhône Blend
Top Pick!
99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "I loved the 2017 Vertigo from barrel, and it didn’t disappoint from bottle. A blend of 63% Syrah, 30% Mourvèdre, and the rest Grenache and Petite Sirah, brought up in 65% new French oak, this full-bodied, massively endowed 2017 has complex notes of blue fruits, blood orange, violets, and exotic spices. As with all Eric’s 2017s, it’s rich and concentrated yet has remarkable purity and elegance at the same time." (10/2019) 96 points Vinous: "Brilliant purple. I'd drink it over the coming 3-5 years, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it evolve longer." (10/2019) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Willow White is a blend of 62% Grenache Blanc, 20% Roussanne, 11% Viognier and 7% Picpoul, aged 18 months in 40% new oak. About this producer: "Opolo’s estate vineyards were established from 1994-1996, with sites on both the west and east side of Paso Robles. The topographically diverse, coastal landscape of the westside vineyards provides for an intense and unique flavor profile. The heat and dryness of the east side vineyard make it an ideal microclimate for growing Bordeaux varietals. Home to a wide range of varietals, the estate vineyards help allow the team at Opolo to create many unique single varietals as well as award winning blends."

Winery notes: The 2017 Merlot opens with dusty aromas of boysenberry, black cherry, vanilla and toasted oak. A soft, rounded texture delivers mouthfilling flavors of blueberry, blackberry, cinnamon, dark chocolate and cola. Velvety tannins are finely integrated into a rich, chewy finish. The wine is aged in a combination of French (60%) and American (40%) oak barrels, 25% of which are new. A small lot of Zinfandel (7%) was incorporated into the final blend to amplify mid-palate fruitiness. Recommended pairings include beef tenderloin, pasta with lamb r...

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 My Favorite Neighbor is also terrific and I suspect would cost 2-3 times its going rate if it was from Napa Valley. It's also the more elegant, perfumed, red-fruited release compared to the darker fruited Harvey and Harriet release. Classy notes of black raspberries, spice box, white flowers, lead pencil shavings, and tobacco leaf all emerge from the glass of this medium to full-bodied red, which offers a seamless texture, fine tannins, and a great finish." Powerful, deeply pitched black and blue fruit, candied licorice, violet pastille and fruitcake flavors are braced by a spine of juicy acidity and a hint of smoky minerals. Stains the palate with densely packed cassis, bitter cherry and blueberry flavors that pick up exotic spice, cola and dark chocolate on the back half. This deeply concentrated wine shows remarkable clarity and litheness for its richness and finishes extremely long and spicy, with a resonating floral note and chewy, steadily building tannins. 96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 Oublie is a blockbuster, ranking with the finest wines in the vintage. Based on 56% Grenache, 22% Mourvèdre, 22% Syrah, brought up in 50% neutral barrels, its vivid purple color is followed by a full-bodied, powerful, yet elegant red that has a great nose of cassis, blackberries, white flowers, leafy herbs, and hints of pepper. 95-97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Tsundere is the only wine to includes any Bordeaux varieties and is 39% Syrah, 27% Tannat, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Grenache, all from the Will Creek District of Paso Robles. Smoky black cherries, blackberries, leafy herbs, cedar, and some meatiness and tobacco notes all emerge from this ripe, full-bodied, sexy yet incredibly elegant blend. It should be reasonably approachable on release, yet I suspect it will benefit from short-term cellaring." (10/2019)

This saturated purple-hued beauty boasts a phenomenal bouquet of black and blue fruits, scorched earth, ground pepper, bouquet garni, lavender, and crushed rocks. 96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2017 White is in the same ballpark and reminds me of a top Hermitage Blanc from Michel Chapoutier. Quince, honeysuckle, buttered citrus, marmalade, and white flower notes all flow to a full-bodied, concentrated, yet beautifully balanced white that does everything right. It’s that perfect match of richness and freshness, not to mention awesome purity." (11/2018)

2017 Linne Calodo "Nemesis" Paso Robles Rhône Blend
New!
Winery notes; 77% Syrah, 12% Grenache, 7% Mourvedre, 4% Graciano. The Nemesis is constantly transforming itself from vintage to vintage. The wine is always derived from our most distinctive blocks of syrah, mourvedre, and grenache. The 2017 vintage: A savory blueberry pie with whipped cream and graham cracker crust. What else can I say? This wine has a big and gorgeous nose, chased on the palate by flavors of roasted meats, toast, and cinnamon. The Nemesis is a pleasure to drink. The mouthfeel is soft and luscious, an extrovert of a wine. With each sip, ...

Winemaker's notes: "This is one of my favorite wines to make each year, because I believe that producing a truly stunning Pinot Gris is actually quite difficult. Modeled after an Alsatian style of PG, its focused on texture and elegance, with the perfect combination of richness and ultra bright acidity. My block at Spanish Springs is all very low yielding hillside fruit that grows in about 80% sand. 12 hours of skin contact precedes a very gentle pressing, followed by a slow fermentation in neutral oak barrels. Twice weekly lees stirring helps to build s...

Winery notes: 70% Zinfandel, 20% Syrah, 5% Carignan, 5% Graciano. If you are looking for Zinfandel, look no further. This is one of the best examples of Zinfandel in the whole state of California. As usual, the bold audacity of Zinfandel is tamed by skillful blending with Syrah, Carignan, and Graciano. It’s like obedience school for the Problem Child, each grape helps develop the wine into a knowledgeable smart ass that will test the boundaries. The rich and bold wine elicits flavors of cranberries, raspberries, orange peel and cinnamon. There’s a wonder...

Winery notes: A clean, spicy Vermentino nose of grapefruit peel, citrus leaf, green herbs and sea spray. Briny. Drink now and over the next few years.

Justin Isosceles has been one of the closest things to a can't-miss domestic Bordeaux blend over the last decade. Add the fact that it so much less expensive than most of its Napa brethren and you have a great bargain on your hands. This year's blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 7% Merlot. 98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The flagship 2017 Estate Cuvée (49% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 21% Petit Verdot) spent 15 months in 90% new French oak, and I certainly blew the barrel review on this wine. It offers a brilliant bouquet of crème de cassis, crushed violets, lead pencil, chocolate, and a rocking sense of minerality. Deep, full-bodied, concentrated, and seamless on the palate, it's about as polished and sexy as they come in the vintage." (10/2019)

Connoisseurs Guide: "As is the case with its siblings from Opolo, this is a Zinfandel little concerned with subtlety and constraint. It runs straightway to heady, late-harvest ripeness with a sweep of chocolate to its juicy and jammy, berry-like fruit, yet that fruit holds its ground against tannin and heat, and its balancing acidity keeps it away from heavy-footed softness. It is a wine of a style, and not one to pour with milder foods, but those who like their Zins big and ripe will have no complaints. *One Star*" (01/2019) Wine Enthusiast: "This is ...

Winemaker notes: "At nearly fifty acres planted, we farm more Cabernet Sauvignon than any other grape. In 2017 we harvested a little earlier than normal (1-2 weeks) due to September heat, but found the grapes had higher natural tannin and deeper color than we have seen in years. Each block is hand-harvested and most undergo 20-30 day fermentations to build color, phenolics and flavor. We aged the wine nearly 28 months in 43% new French Oak barrels, allowing the tannins to soften and the fruit flavors to marry."

94-95 points Vinous: "Bright violet. Smoke-accented cherry and blackberry aromas are complemented by suggestions of candied licorice, musky rhubarb and cracked pepper. Chewy and broad on entry and then tighter in the midpalate, offering concentrated dark berry preserve and spicecake flavors and a sweet touch of candied violet. Closes on a recurring floral note, showing impressive persistence and suave, even tannins. (JR)" (09/2018) 94 points Wine Spectator: "Combines structure with polish and substance, offering expressive raspberry, garrigue and smoke...

Back In Stock!
95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The Zinfandel-based 2016 Outsider gives up complex, textbook notes of sweet red and black fruits, cedarwood, white pepper, and incense. This is a classic Zinfandel that carries loads of fruit and richness yet stays light, elegant, and graceful on the palate, with terrific purity and freshness. It’s already impossible to resist, and I see no need to delay gratification either. The blend is 82% Zinfandel, 7% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre, and the balance Graciano, all brought up in new and neutral American oak." (11/2018) 94 points ...
