2006 Piper-Heidsieck "Cuvée Rare" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The flagship release is the 2006 Champagne Rare, a 70/30 split of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that’s a cellar selection from 8 different Grand Cru vineyards. Tight, backward, and straight-up structured, it offers brilliant notes of stone fruits, toasted brioche, white flowers, and obvious minerality. Needing plenty of air to show at its best, this beauty has a wonderful mid-palate, a racy mousse, and the balance and class to cruise for over two decades in cool cellars. 97+" (11/2019) 96 points Wine Spectator: "Aromas and flavors o...

93 points Wine Spectator: "Baked raspberry and melon notes are ripe and fragrant on the nose and palate, joining accents of toast, spun honey and ground coffee in this balanced Champagne. Tightly meshed, with mouthwatering acidity, this lingers on the spiced finish. (AN)" (10/2018) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Special Club Grand Cru Brut is a blend of 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay from Aÿ. The wine has a deep, fine and mineral bouquet of ripe and concentrated fruits (pineapples and citrus) intermixed with chalky notes. Pure, f...

97 points Wine Spectator: "A stunner, displaying all the lithe grace of a ballet dancer that belies the underlying powerful musculature. Sleek acidity creates a mouthwatering impression throughout, seamlessly knit with the fine, creamy texture. Expressive lime blossom and spice aromatics are layered with fruit flavors of poached apricot, dried cherry and a touch of passion fruit coulis. Long and minerally on the racy finish, echoing rich, savory notes of grilled nut and espresso. (AN)" (12/2020)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2006 Taittinger "Comtes de Champagne" Brut Blanc de Blancs (97VN, 96JG, 96JS, 96RP, 95WE, 94BH, 94WS). Vinous: "The 2006 Comtes de Champagne is striking, especially in the way it brings together elements of ripeness and freshness in a hypothetical blend of the 2002 and 2004. Smooth and creamy on the palate, the 2006 is all about texture. There is a real feeling of density and weight in the 2006, qualities I expect to see grow with time in the bottle. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. The 2006 has been nothing short of magnificent both times I have tasted it. Comtes de Champagne remains the single best value (in relative terms) in tête de cuvée Champagne. I suggest buying a case and following it over the next 20-30 years, which is exactly what I intend to do. There is little doubt the 2006 Comtes de Champagne is a magical Champagne in the making. (AG) 97+" (07/2015)

96 points Vinous: "The 2006 Clos des Goisses is stellar, but it is also going to need quite a bit of time to come into its own. Powerful and ample in the best of the Goisses style, the 2006 hits the palate with serious intensity. Orchard fruits, lemon oil, white flowers and almonds are some of the many notes that open up in the glass, but, as is often the case with young Goisses, it is the wine's gravitas that is front and center. Even with all of its overtness, though, the 2006 retains striking, crystalline purity. I imagine the 2006 will reward Champag...
