Most people still picture sherry matured malts when they think of the Speyside district (formerly known as Glenlivet until that got too confusing), but the region's bread and butter is still the soft, fruity, charming, malt-driven style you'll find inside this bottle of Auchroisk 15 year old. Part of the Johnnie Walker empire, we occasionally see Auchroisk here in the states as a Diageo limited edition release, but rarely as a consistently-bottled single malt expression. This particular specimen is like a fresh blast of summer with a huge dose of peaches...

The third release of the renowned heavily peated offering from Bruichladdich. This massive whisky is shows incredible depth for its age. Like all the cask strength Port Charlotte offerings, it is one of only 24000 long gone bottles and not readily available. Here are Serge Valentine's thorough tasting notes: "Greatest of news, PC7 is ‘more traditionnal’, that is to say partly bourbon and partly sherry matured. Colour: gold. Nose: much more spirity than the Laddie of course, thanks to the very high alcohol. We do get coffee (as often in high-strength whis...

An apt way to start 2021, another barrel of the incredible Speymalt Macallan from Gordon & Macphail. This time we've secured a first-fill sherry hogshead at the perfect age of 18 years. Macallan aged full term in quality first-fill sherry at cask strength is unheard of outside of the "Exceptional Cask" series. That luxurious line of malts offered by the distillery includes a single 2001 aged in American Oak Sherry Puncheon bottled in 2019, which retailed for a cool $1500. We were generously allocated one bottle, which sold promptly of course. You'll be l...

The excellent Ben Nevis Distillery is quickly becoming one of our absolute favorite malts. The wonderful old distillery at the base of Scotland's tallest mountain was built in the town of Fort Williams back in 1825. Founded by "Long" John Macdonald, the namesake of the famous old blend, Ben Nevis was one of the first single malt distilleries to install a coffey still on site, producing both grain and malt whiskies for blends. In 1989, the distillery was acquired by Nikka and became focused almost entirely on the Japanese market. US releases are extremely...

No Longer Available! K & L Wine Merchants Exclusive Cask! Allocated One Bottle Per Person! Are you ready to be part of history? On Friday, July 21, 2006, while on holiday visiting Islay, Jim McEwan and myself drove up to Bruichladdich Warehouse #13. We were looking for that special cask of 2001 Bruichladdich to have as a K&L Wine Merchant exclusive. What we found was this fantastic Bourbon Cask. We pulled out the bung, plunged in the valinch and poured the whisky into a glass. WOW! Even with all its youthfulness the whisky displayed classic Bruichladdic...

The legendary first release from the coveted cask strength small batch line of smoky single malt from the Bruichladdich. Named Port Charlotte for the famous demolished distillery and namesake town a mile down the road from the Bruichladdich distillery, this special high proof spirit was some of the first evidence that Bruichladdich was back and in a big way. Perhaps one of the decades most collectable bottles, considering it was released around $100 and currently trades upwards of $1300 in Europe. A modern masterpiece whose rarity is becoming equally leg...

As many of you might have realized, we're obsessed with young Bowmore. It's not only because we've had some of our most poignant and even spiritual moments in Scotland at this special distillery, but in fact because they keep cranking out the most incredible product. Bowmore is different from many of the other distilleries on Islay for a number of reasons. Firstly, they do not purchase barley from Port Ellen Maltings--where all on the island save Bruichladdich acquire their main input. In fact, Bowmore is hand malting as much as 25% of their own barley u...

Oh, the allure of pure Bourbon barrel-aged Bowmore! It's been quite a while since we've found a pure American oak expression of the legendary Islay malt, but we're back with a vengeance with the arrival of this 15 year old cask strength edition from Old Particular. Fans of the whisky stalwart will go absolutely bonkers for this one as it's hands-down one of the best Bowmore casks we've ever bottled. The nose is warm wave of sweet oak and gentle phenols, the smoke swirling just faintly behind all that vanilla. The palate is oily, then concentrated with mo...

This unbelievable cask of blended malt is very mysterious. Supposedly sourced from Edrington stocks, the vintage date represents the age of the youngest spirit in the blend and much old malts are likely included. So this should be a blend of Macallan, Glenrothes, Glenturret, and any number of other distilleries, married in a sherry butt and for some insane reason not used in any of the group's numerous blended products. The low proof may be the result of some reduction during blending, although the richness and complexity would imply that the lower proof...

The exceptional products coming from this humble Elgin bottler have long been sought-after by collectors and connoisseurs for their quality and value. Gordon & Macphail's special position in the Scotch industry is unmatched by any other blender or bottler. It is through the great vision of their predecessors that the current administration of this storied brand is able to offer such amazing and unique stocks that are otherwise not being sold. Represented in their warehouses are over 100 different Scottish distilleries, many of them closed and gone foreve...

We absolutely killed it with the '02 Hogshead at 46% this year, but we're not done with Bowmore. This distillery is cranking out the most magnificent malt and Signatory gets these amazing high quality butts. This is more consistent with the house style than the last cask, bringing the nutty sherry slightly more to the foreground. It's a stark reminder that Bowmore should be considered one of Scotland's greatest distilleries. Treat this with the reverence it deserves and this whisky will make you feel like you're the special one instead of the other way a...

Bruichladdich's Jim McEwan loves to toy with wine cask whisky enhancement, so you can imagine the various Frankensteinian experiments that are going on inside his Islay warehouse. As David OG and I scoured the rickhouse, darting in between barrels, crawling under iron to read the various names etched on the side of the wood, we were shocked to see "chenin blanc" scribbled on one particular barrel head. 2001 Bruichladdich aged in sweet Chenin Blanc? "We must try this immediately!" we pleaded. This chewy, oily, dense, honeyed, viscous whisky started of...

Best New Whisky and Best Whisky 12 Years and Under (Jim Murray's Whisky Bible, 2009) The Port Charlotte 6 Year is a thoroughly original, heavily peated whisky (40ppm) distilled, matured and bottled at Bruichladdich Distillery. It is the same whisky as the PC-5, just a year older, a little mellower and a little lower in alcohol (2%). Called Cuairt Beatha, which translates to "Walk of Life," the name was given to represent the spiritual journey of both the whisky and the men who made it. Distiller Jim McEwan says: "Opens beautifully balanced on malt, peat ...

This powerful little Lochnagar is basically one of the few independently bottled around Lochnagar and one of the only cask strength version on the market in the US, we've seen released recently. We managed to get a great price on this cask from the little distillery deep in the Cairngorm mountains. After ten years in a hogshead this whisky already has a lot going on. The wonderful fresh character of this miniscule distillery is at the forefront. Grass and fresh apples, with whiffs of something tannic in the background, maybe it's a bit of black tea. Text...

This first-fill sherry cask really darkened the whisky quite quickly. This is a very dark, supple, and rich expression of Bunnahabhain, but it still maintains the resinous, earthy, and salty character throughout all that thick sherry influence. A very fun Islay malt that offers something off the beaten path.

In 1994, Bruichladdich was closed down for good, the staff released, and the machinery left to the harsh Hebridean weather; there was scant hope of resurrecting it. Yet in 2001, under new vibrant and private ownership, following six months of stripping down every nut and bolt of the old Victorian machinery, the old lady danced again! This "Resurrection Dram" is the first spirit to run off those stills under the careful guidance of Jim McEwan and his team, made in the old fashioned artisinal way with a slow trickle distillation method. Aged in new oak ...
