Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2016 Pride Mountain "Reserve" Sonoma-Napa Counties Claret (96JD, 95RP, 92VN, 92WE, 92WS). Jeb Dunnuck: "There are just over 500 cases of the 2016 Reserve Claret, a more Merlot-dominated blend that includes 31% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Petit Verdot. It's similarly hued to the Reserve Cabernet and has a terrific perfume of blackcurrants, black cherries, ground herbs, and black tea as well as a whiff of dark chocolate and new saddle leather. This beauty offers a stunning array of full-bodied richness and depth, building yet ripe tannins, notable purity, and a sense of power without heaviness. It is a fabulously complex Bordeaux blend from Napa/Sonoma that will continue drinking beautifully for another 20 years. " (01/2020)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard is composed of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot. It was aged for 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a little coaxing before it charges out of the glass with bold expressions of crème de cassis, boysenberries and black cherry preserves plus suggestions of cast-iron pan, violets, allspice and sandalwood with a touch of fragrant earth. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is absolutely packed with muscular black fruit preserves flavors, beautifully supported by finely grained tannins and lovely freshness, finishing with loads of mineral and spice fireworks. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "'We had half the fruit in at To Kalon when the fires hit in 2017, ' winemaker Benoit Touquette informed me. 'That's all we used.' Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard prances out of the glass with classically opulent scents of crème de cassis, baked plums, Morello cherries and mulberries plus nuances of rose oil, spice cake, bouquet garni and dusty soil. Full-bodied, the palate is decadently showy with loads of exotic spice and floral accents lifting the rich, black fruit preserves flavors. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is reticent on the nose at first, but opens up nicely with time, blackberry, plum, black coffee, cedar and a slight estuarine note. The palate is full-bodied with grippy tannins on the entry, firm backbone and good depth. Stern and masculine, a saline note towards the cedar and tobacco scented, sappy finish. John Gilman: "The 1983 Château Latour has never had a great reputation, and I probably had not tasted the wine since close to its release back in the mid-1980s. I was very surprised to see just how stunning the wine has turned out to be, given that Robert Parker only gave it 87 points back in the day. However, this particular magnum was absolutely stellar, offering up a deep, complex and classic nose of cassis, black cherries, dark gravelly soil tones, tobacco leaf, cedar and a topnote of cigar smoke. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with fine structure and grip, excellent gravelly undertow, still moderate tannins and a long, complex and perfectly balanced and classic Latour finish. This is a very, very underrated vintage of Latour." (09/2020)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Composed of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc, the singular, absolutely compelling 2015 The Absurd opens with a seriously intense black currant cordial and plum preserves core, slowly revealing cedar chest, mincemeat pie, potpourri and spice box hints plus a waft of chocolate-covered cherries. The full-bodied, concentrated palate is packed with opulent black fruits and baking spice layers, featuring a rock-solid backbone of tight-grained tannins and just enough freshness to lift and tantalize on the long, seductive finish. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1996 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (97VN, 96RP, 95DC, 95ST, 94JG). Vinous: "What a treat it is to taste these two Pichon Lalandes straight from the chateau’s cellar. The 1996 Pichon Lalande is stratospheric from the very first taste. The deep, layered bouquet alone is deeply transfixing. Smoke, mocha, dark spices, lavender, crème de cassis, a host of dark-fleshed fruits and a touch of warm, resonant sweetness from the French oak draw me in. All of those sensations follow through to the palate, where the wine is massive, intense and totally enveloping. Time has softened the tannins to the point the 1996 is ready to drink, but there is enough sheer concentration here to support another 20-30 years of exceptional drinking. (AG) 97+" (02/2016)

Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2018 Materium comes from the Weitz Vineyard in Oakville and is all Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in mostly new barrels. It's a very different wine than the Amoenus release and has more elegant, seamless aromas and flavors of crème de cassis, black raspberries, tobacco leaf, flowery incense, and sandalwood. Château Margaux-like in its elegance and complexity, this brilliant wine has loads of sweet fruit, flawless integration of its tannins and acidity, flawless balance, and just a heavenly overall profile that I wish every reader could taste. Rich, deep and sumptuous, the 2010 is incredibly inviting. Sweet dark cherries, mocha, flowers and espresso meld together as the 2010 opens up in the glass. A soft, plush finish rounds things out in style. The Merus Cabernet Sauvignon is overt, juicy and beautifully balanced from start to finish. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The nearly perfect 2002 Proprietary Red Wine is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and the rest dollops of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. This exotic, full-throttle, nearly over-the-top red wine’s intensity, richness and smoky coffee notes intermixed with notions of chocolate, graphite, and jammy blackberry and black currant fruit ooze from the glass. This rich, concentrated beauty tastes more like a top-notch, young Right Bank Bordeaux from a vintage such as 2009 than a wine dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon. Vinous: "The 2016 Proprietary Red Wine Sage Mountain Vineyard may very well be the single greatest vintage made here thus far. It is quite simply a stunning wine and a towering achievement from the Mondavi family. Powerful, ample and sweeping in stature, the 2016 boasts breathtaking intensity in all of its dimensions. I see the pure, vibrant fruit of the 2013, but with more finessed tannins that add to the wine's feeling of real sensuality. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon (100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 20 months in 80% new French oak) shows not a trace of oak and has wonderfully sweet blueberry and blackberry fruit in the nose, along with some licorice, incense, and charcoal embers. The color is opaque to the rim, and the wine full-bodied, with the blue fruits dominating on the palate. It has a finish of a good 40-45 seconds. Vinous: "The 1989 Palmer has vied with the 1983 as the highlight of the decade, so it is fascinating to revisit it at 30 years old. It has a wonderful bouquet of degraded red berry fruit, singed leather and hints of game and mint, beautifully defined and still so fresh, yet undeniably old-school in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and still brimming with vigor, delivering a fine bead of acidity and a touch of cracked black pepper. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2014 Realm "Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (99RP, 98JS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "There are 400 cases of the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard, which is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot. This comes from the backstreets of St. Helena and the site basically looks like a quarry with its extreme gravelly soils. The wine is made from clone 337, which may be my favorite of the Cabernet clones. As I have said before, this is a Mission Haut-Brion on steroids – an incredibly fabulous wine with notes of scorched earth, charcoal embers, blackberry and blueberry fruit, an almost endless mouthfeel with powerful fruit, but elegance as well as purity. A thoroughly flawless and seamless full-bodied wine with 30 years of upside, this is pure perfection. If you have the patience, try to hold off for a couple of years, as this is one of the more structured of the 2014s. (RP)" (12/2016)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This small estate on Howell Mountain remains one of California's finest producers of world-class, complex red wine. The 1990 Cabernet Sauvignon-Howell Mountain is typically backward, tannic, full-bodied, and concentrated, but 6-7 years away from accessible drinkability. The color is opaque garnet/purple, and the nose is tight but promising, with scents of minerals, cassis, and spices. Rich and concentrated, as well as ferociously tannic (the tannin is ripe rather than astringent), this promising wine should reach its apogee by the turn of the century and last 20 or more years. Bid on this bottle of 1987 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac (91JG). John Gilman: "This was the last vintage to be made by the Baron de Rothschild, and I have always had a sneaky suspicion that the 1987 may have been made a bit more memorable by the inclusion of some of the 1986 or 1988 bookends that may have been laying around, as the wine utterly transcends the vintage in terms of depth and power. Regardless of how the quality of the wine was ultimately arrived at, it is the finest 1987 Medoc that I have ever tasted, jumping from the glass in a blend of red berries, spices, coffee, eucalyptus, a touch of walnuts and the traditional Mouton nicely toasted new oak. On the palate the wine is medium-full, complex and à point, with excellent focus and fine length on the shapely finish. This is a lovely, commemorative bottling that still has plenty of life ahead of it." (11/2003)

Vinous: "The 1989 Haut-Brion remains one of the outstanding achievements of the decade, and it consistently flirts with perfection. I was fortunate to taste the wine three times over the space of six months, though this tasting note comes from a bottle poured at the château by Jean-Philippe Delmas – the first time I had ever tasted an ex-château bottle. It is a fabulous wine. Showing little maturity in terms of bricking, it has a fabulous bouquet of graphite, clove and tobacco aromas that burst from the glass, perhaps with a little more amplitude than others I have tasted. Antonio Galloni writes: "This extensive range from Beringer is full of highlights, with one or two wines that might have been more convincing. A bevy of single-vineyard Cabernets form the core of the range, and it is precisely these wines that show another step in the search for greater freshness and energy that culminates in a fabulous edition of the flagship Private Reserve that avoids the heaviness of some recent vintages. My only real quibble is with the Knights Valley Cabernets, which seem to have become more fruity and less expressive of place. Overall, though, there is plenty to like in this lineup from Beringer and Chief Winemaker Mark Beringer."

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1994 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars "Fay Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was founded in the early 1970s by the Winiarski family on land that would eventually become part of the Stags Leap AVA in Napa Valley. The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant blend had its first vintage in 1972, and rose to rapid fame in 1976 when it beat out the likes of Mouton-Rothschild and Haut-Brion at the "Judgement of Paris" blind tasting that is widely credited with putting California's wine industry on the map. The Fay vineyard was established by Nathan Fay in 1961. John Gilman: "The 1968 vintage was the first truly legendary Martha’s Vineyard bottling and its reputation has been stellar since the wine was first released in 1973. At age forty-three, the wine remains absolutely at its zenith and is drinking stunningly well. The bouquet is deep, wide open and brilliant, as it soars from the glass in a mélange of red and black cherries, a touch of chocolate, a beautiful signature note of fresh mint, woodsmoke, Rutherford dust, a touch of petroleum jelly, red curry and a topnote of orange zest. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, very pure and absolutely à point, with a sappy core of fruit, a beautiful base of soil, great focus, bright, tangy acids and flawless balance on the very, very long and utterly seamless finish. John Gilman: "I used to drink quite a bit of Lynch-Bages back in the decades of the 1980s and 1990s, but I seem to seldom cross paths with the wine these days, as it was not one of the estates I bought for my own cellar (other than the 1982 and 1985 vintages, which I prematurely drank up cases of in their youth). The 1970 vintage here has always been very strong and this most recent bottle was showing beautifully, wafting from the glass in a complex nose of cassis, black cherries, a touch of petroleum jelly, cigar ash, gravelly soil tones and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely broad-shouldered in personality, with a good core of fruit, fine focus and grip, melting tannins and a long, complete and classic finish. Vinous: "One of the most pleasant surprises in this tasting, the 2002 Latour is just beginning to show the full breadth of its aromatic complexity, but it is also has more than enough depth to drink well for several decades. Tar, graphite, incense and smoke open up in the glass in a Latour that leans towards the more delicate, feminine side of things. Silky tannins add polish and creaminess through to the finish. Bid on this bottle of 1998 Tenuta di Trinoro Toscana Rosso (98DC, 95VN, 94WS, 93RP). Decanter: "During the '90s when a lot of producers went too far with extractions, Andrea Franchetti remained faithful to his style. Today, when a lot of producers are moving back to less extractive wines, the owner of Tenuta di Trinoro is again an outlier. This finely educated viticulturist reads his vineyards in Orcia valley in depth to achieve maximum concentration. His wine is never upbeat nor too easy to drink soon. Examples such as 1998, a warm vintage in Tuscany, do much to explain their potential. A fruit-forward profile of cassis, cherry and strawberry ice cream is supported by graphite minerality, a leafy touch and wild Mediterranean herbs with tea leaf and lavender on top. Powerful and large on the palate, showing great extraction of tannins with outstanding grace promising great things in the long haul. (AF)" (09/2020)
