While it doesn't hold the sway in the imaginations of wine aficionados of Chambertin, La Tâche, or Romanée-Conti, Clos de la Roche is one of the hidden gems of the Côte de Nuits grands crus. Sitting in the shadows of its sister crus Clos de Tart and Clos St-Denis, it boasts outsized quality on a regular basis, finding otherworldly expression in the hands of producers such as Ponsot, Pousse d'Or, Dujac, and yes, Armand Rousseau. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2015 Antinori "Tignanello" Toscana (98JS, 98VN, 97WS, 96RP, 95WE, 94W&S). Vinous: "Once again, the 2015 Tignanello is stunning. Sweet, floral notes give the 2015 striking aromatic intensity to play off a core of red Sangiovese fruit. In 2015, the Sangiovese is a bit higher than the norm, which comes through in the wine's flavor profile. The tannins are also a bit biting at this stage, but that won't be an issue in time. Bright red cherry, plum, blood orange mint and sweet floral notes build into a finish laced with energy and tension. The 2015 is utterly captivating. That's all there is to it. (AG)" (08/2019)

There is excellent volume and mid-palate density to the slightly more energetic big-bodied flavors that also coat the mouth with sap on the long if mildly warm finish." (01/2020)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind at the 2012 Southwold tasting, the 2012 Château Margaux has a taut, linear, pencil lead-infused bouquet with pure blackberry and boysenberry scents, an undercurrent of tobacco that surfaces after five minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity, a life-affirming sense of balance with well-integrated new oak towards the finish. I concur with Robert Parker that his has become more structured and masculine in bottle, yet there is pedigree here from start to finish, a sense of effortlessness that is seductive. Vinous: "The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Tychson Hill opens with the most exquisite of aromatics. Sage, rosemary, graphite, tobacco, menthol, black cherries, plums all flesh out in a dark, voluptuous wine loaded with class. The interplay of savory notes with layers of fruit is simply breathtaking. Vivid, nuanced and beautifully structured, the 2011 is firing on all cylinders. There is a level of aromatic lift and pure finesse that is simply striking. Hints of orange peel and white pepper add an exotic flair on the close. Jeb Dunnuck: "One of the standouts is the 2017 Surrealist Red Blend and I’d put this up against anything in the vintage. A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Petit Verdot that spent 18-20 months in 54% new French oak, this full-bodied, rich, powerful wine has a terrific, seamless texture, fine tannins, and a rocking nose of cassis, dried herbs, new saddle leather, and toasted spices. I love its balance, it has a great mid-palate, and it’s going to evolve for 20+ years." (01/2020)

Vinous: "As impossible as it might seem, the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon takes things to another level. An exquisite, celestial bouquet melds into endless layers of fruit as this rich, voluptuous wine blossoms on the palate. Full-bodied and seductive, the 2007 conquers all of the senses with its head spinning, beautiful personality. As always, Screaming Eagle is a bit more restrained next to Napa Valley's other heavy hitters, yet the pedigree of this opulent vintage comes through in spades. A kaleidoscope of aromas and flavors flows through to the creamy, textured finish. I have tasted the 2007 several times recently and it has always been magnificent. Bid on this bottle of 1964 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli "Antichi Vigneti Propri" Barolo Riserva. From the personally owned old-vine holdings of one of the oldest winemaking houses in Piedmont. In fact, the Barolo of Borgogno was the wine chosen for the official celebration lunch of Italy's unity in 1861. Nebbiolo is the "king of wines" for a reason — it can age with the best grapes, especially in great vintages like 1964. Dating from 1761 Borgogno is one of the most historical wineries in Barolo. The underground cellars continue to represent a rare historical memory of the Langa to this day, and the wines are made according to tradition: long spontaneous fermentations in concrete tanks without the use of selected yeasts, and long periods of ageing, strictly in large Slavonian oak barrels. Vineyards are culitvatead in Barolo, Madonna di Como and in the Colli Tortonesi.

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2012 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (98VN, 96JS, 96RP, 94DC, 94WS, 93W&S). Vinous: "The 2012 Monte Bello is one of the most harmonious young Monte Bellos I can remember tasting. Seamless and voluptuous through to the finish, the 2012 is showing beautifully today. Raspberry jam, pomegranate, white flowers, mint and spices are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass. A wine with a distinctly red-hued profile, silky tannins, no hard edges and exceptional overall balance, the 2012 Monte Bello is simply magnificent. The 2012 is racy but also impeccably balanced throughout, with shades of the 2001 that come through from time to time. I won't be surprised if the 2013 and 2014 both eventually surpass it, but there is no denying that the 2012 is simply stunning today. This is one of the best showings yet for the 2012. Bid on this bottle of 1978 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (98RP, 95JG, 93VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The wine offers up a rich and kaleidoscopically complex bouquet of black truffles, dark chocolate, black currants, pencil shavings and Egyptian musk. On the palate, it's full-bodied, layered and complete, with ripe, melting tannins, an ample core of fruit and a long, tangy finish. It gets better and better with air. The 1978 is a touch more savory and a little less lavishly textural than the 1974, but the two are very close in ultimate quality. Connoisseurs will be interested to learn that a portion of the 1978 was rebottled due to an incomplete malolactic fermentation: antique olive bottles indicate the rebottled 1978, whereas the original bottles are in Champagne green. This tasting note refers to a pristine example of the former, but the original bottling is reputed to be even better today. (WK)" (05/2018)

Pale to medium garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Rompecabezas Red Wine opens with smoked meats, black raspberries, Black Forest cake and spice cake with earthy nuances of truffles, underbrush and tar plus a waft of violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate dances with red and black fruits plus plenty of spice and earth accents, framed by lovely plush tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and savory. Musky aromas of cassis, licorice, game, tobacco leaf and subtle brown spices. Velvety-sweet and deep, with hints of tobacco leaf, mint and herbs giving definition to the middle palate. Stephen Tanzer of Vinous writes: "This small domaine in Meursault has been generating considerable buzz over the past couple years, so I decided it was time for a visit. Bernard and son Pierre Boisson bottle three or four thousand cases of wine a year without making extensive use of new oak. According to Bernard, all the grapes are crushed slowly and no decanting is done after fermentation: the juice goes straight into tonneaux with a good deal of its bourbes. No enzymes or yeasts are used, the wines remain in barrel until being racked prior to next harvest."

Jeb Dunnuck: "Checking in as a final blend of 30% Mourvèdre, 22% Zinfandel, 13% Syrah, 13% Tempranillo and the balance Grenache and Petite Sirah, the 2014 Paderewski Vineyard is as voluptuous and decadent as it gets. Plum sauce, exotic spices, white pepper, candy corn and spring flowers, it hits the palate with a broad, expansive, sexy style, ripe tannin, no weight and a blockbuster finish. It’s so well balanced and seamless, it can come across as a touch easy, yet it has terrific complexity, good mid-palate density and a great, great finish. This is what great wine is all about. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1976 is even thicker, richer, and more jammy than some of the other great vintages of La Mouline. In essence, it is something between a dry red table wine and a vintage port. Of course it is not sweet, but it is so concentrated; one simply does not see wines such as this except for 1947 Petrus or 1947 Cheval Blanc. The wine has thrown a couple of ounces of sediment. It offers a heavenly bouquet of sweet, floral-infused black-raspberry/cassis fruit. Extremely unctuous and viscous, with mind-boggling concentration, this wine has always been exceptional to drink, but it continues to defy the aging curve. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1965 Charles Krug "Vintage Selection" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Jancis Robinson: "What a find! This was so jam packed with fruit that, on being served it blind, I was not 100% sure it was Cabernet (I thought it could have been a particularly bumptious right bank wine), although it was beautifully evolved and mature. But it was brilliantly robust and lively and subsided into showing its age only after an hour or two. Amazing to think this was made before Robert Mondavi opened his eponymous winery, and therefore presumably when he was still at the old family business, Charles Krug. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1990 Pichon-Longueville Baron has always been one of my benchmark wines, one that never ceases to perform. Now at 27 years of age, it is clearly at its peak, and what a wondrous thing it is. Now showing some bricking on the rim, the bouquet is utterly sublime, with red berries, cedar, touches of graphite, crushed rose petals and incense. You just want to become enveloped by these aromas. The palate is perfectly balanced, perhaps not as structured as it once showed since the tannins have mellowed, but what you get is a Pauillac relishing its secondary phase, which is almost Burgundy-like in terms of mouthfeel. Suffused with tension, it gains weight in the mouth toward the slightly tart finish. It is a Pichon Baron that only knows how to give sophisticated drinking pleasure. (NM)" (06/2017)

Bid on this bottle of 1977 Ridge "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Zinfandel. Ridge Vineyards was founded in 1962, though the history of the Monte Bello vineyard and winery dates back to the 1880s. Paul Draper, who joined Ridge in 1969, is one of the world's most celebrated winemakers, with awards including Decanter Man of the Year (2000), COPIA Award for winemaking (2004) and the James Beard Award (2007). In 2015, a Decanter Magazine poll of his peers voted him in the top five most admired winemakers in the world. While Ridge is best known for its Cabernet, it is also well known for its range of Zinfandel wines and Zinfandel-based blends.

John Gilman: "The Butteaux vineyard is located with Montée de Tonnerre on the Rive Droit, and according to Jean-François, can always be counted on to make more age-worthy wines. In my experience, the Butteaux is always the second best premier cru in the Raveneau stable, with the wines lasting as well as the Montée de Tonnerre. The 2000 will be superb, and will require a few years in the cellar before it is broachable. The bouquet is deep and pure, offering up scents of lemon zest, green apple, strong chalky soil tones, incipient notes of paraffin, and though it makes no sense (with all these ancient barrels), a bit of vanilla. On the palate, the wine is deep and nicely tensile, with a great core of fruit, excellent delineation, birght, firm acids, and great legnth and grip on the finish. 93+ " (12/2003)

The strikingly pure, delineated and energetic middle weight flavors display outstanding precision on the almost pungently mineral-driven, balanced and hugely long finish. This is a classic Taillepieds and while there is some of the hallmark austerity present, it is somewhat less than I'm used to seeing in this wine. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: ". . . the 1995 Montus Cuvee Prestige, a 100% Tannat (the local grape), aged in 100% new oak. . . is a tannic wine, although this is not a wine that is harsh and astringent without the balancing fruit. The color is an opaque black. The wine possesses a magnificent, sweet, pure nose of cassis, black plums, and subtle new oak notes. Extraordinarily deep and full-bodied, with layers of concentrated, jammy fruit, a formidable tannin level, and a monster finish, this is unquestionably one of the great 1995s (and I am including all my top picks from Bordeaux).
