Lambert Bridge is one of Sonoma County's best-kept secrets among top-notch Cabernet producers. Founded in 1975 in Dry Creek Valley, Lambert Bridge was producing tens of thousands of cases up to the turn of the century when they pared down to 8,000 cases a year, refocusing on quality. The winery's owner, Patti Chambers, is a well-known philanthropist in her second home state, New Jersey. Winemaker Jennifer Higgins is a Sonoma Valley native, working with Simi, William Hill and Lancaster Estate before finally joining the Lambert Bridge team in 2010.

Medium to deep ruby-purple colored, the 2018 Pinot Noir UV Vineyard rolls out of the glass with intense notes of Morello cherries, rhubarb, raspberry pie, bouquet garni and lilacs with suggestions of Marmite toast, fungi, fragrant soil and forest floor. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 James Berry Vineyard Proprietary Red is made from 45% Grenache, 29% Mourvedre, 18% Syrah and 8% Counoise (which Justin commented was a blend that was put together relatively late). It saw a big chunk of whole cluster (the Grenache was mostly destemmed though) and was brought up all in puncheons and foudre (the normal concrete component went to the Rocket Block). It offers up gorgeous notes of black raspberries, cherries, cassis, ground herbs and flowers. John Gilman: "The 2013 Bearwallow Vineyard pinot noir from Rhys Vineyards is starting to drink very nicely, though like the 2014 Swan Terrace, it is still in climbing mode and will be even better with further bottle age. Today, the bouquet is starting to show the first signs of secondary layering, wafting from the glass in a fine mix of black cherries, dark berries, lovely spice tones, a fine base of dark soil, fresh herb tones, cedar, hints of the cola to come and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and starting to get nicely velvety on the attack, with a lovely core of fruit, fine transparency and grip, fine-grained, seamless tannins and a long, tangy and complex finish. Vinous: "An addition to the range, 2014 Pinot Noir Estate Raschen Ridge, is a wine of exquisite finesse. Silky, gracious and lifted, the 2014 has a Chambolle-like sweetness and striking aromatic presence. Fine tannins give the wine its shape and overall feel, while hints of orange peel, sweet red cherry and herbs add to the wine's understated personality. The Raschen Ridge is named after America painter Henry Raschen, who once lived on the property, and emerges from a ridge that sits between the eastern and western sides of the estate. Perhaps because of that location, the wine captures an extraordinary amount of the nuance that has made Hirsch such a compelling site for the many winemakers who have coveted this fruit over the years. Creamy, ample and so expressive, the 2019 has a lot to offer. Soft contours and striking mid-palate presence add immediacy, but the 2019 has plenty of the energy that runs through all these wines. Of the 1979 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Stag's Leap Wine Cellars was founded in the early 1970s by the Winiarski family on land that would eventually become part of the Stags Leap AVA in Napa Valley. They first produced Cabernet Sauvignon in 1972, and then rose to rapid fame in 1976 when their wine beat out the likes of Mouton-Rothschild and Haut-Brion at the blind Judgement of Paris tasting--an event that is widely credited with putting California's wine industry on the map.

The wine provides sweet fruit on the attack, low acidity, medium body, and a nicely-textured finish with fat/glycerin in evidence. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1996 Haut Bailly is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc. It has an attractive bouquet with blackcurrant pastilles, briary, a touch of gravel and dried orange peel. As I commented a few years ago, this is a 1996 that is not as immediate as others, but seems to find its voice with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a soy-tinged opening. This is well balanced and quite rounded in the mouth, quite masculine and perhaps having dispensed with some of the freshness and vitality that it showed in numerous tastings in the previous decade. There is a noticeable salinity here, lending it a marine-like finish with black olive on the aftertaste: a highly enjoyable Haut-Bailly, perchance one soon to reach the end of its plateau? Rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous concentration and sheer power, the 2017 Dominus captures all the personality of this site along with the natural opulence of the year. Inky dark fruit, lavender, menthol, licorice, plum, gravel and a host of dark spice notes infuse the 2017 with seemingly endless layers of nuance. Over the last two years I have tasted several hundred Napa Valley Cabernets, both from barrel and bottle. There is no question that Dominus belongs among the elite in 2017; it is simply a breathtaking wine. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Medium to dark ruby with some browning at the edges, this wine is approaching maturity and exhibits an interesting, moderately intense bouquet of ripe plums, spicy oak, and leather. Plenty of tannin is still evident, but the overall balance and depth of fruit suggest that the tannin will clearly outlive the fruit. It lacks the depth and concentration to be great, but for the vintage it is a respectable Mouton for drinking over the next decade. Vinous: "The 2009 Beaune 1er Cru 150th Anniversary is every bit as magical as it has always been. There is a translucence to the fruit that is just remarkable. That is the good news. The not so good news is that the 2009 remains very tightly wound and in need of further cellaring. The aromatics are just starting to open up, but the tannins remain quite fierce. Readers who own the 2009 should be prepared to cellar it for at least a few years. There is an effortlessness to the 2009 that is hard to describe, but that gives the wine its sense of impeccable balance. Hints of sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, dried herbs and cherry add the closing shades of aromatic nuance to this gorgeous, compelling Beaune from Jadot. The 2009 is a blend of 17 different sites. Pungent, inky, nutty aromas of blackcurrants and minerals; very sexy oak treatment gives the nose a wonderful sweetness. Big, minerally, and shapely, with lovely purity of dark berry flavor. Has clarity and grip, but not quite the richness of the '95. The tannins build in the glass, but are in harmony with the wine's middle palate material. Uncanny length for the vintage. (ST)" (05/1996)

Vinous: "The 1985 Sociando-Mallet, picked between September 30 and October 18, has a very savory bouquet with scents of Italian cured meat, dry straw and a touch of black fruit that is usurped by strong black truffle and smoky scents. It is firmly into its secondary phase, but what I appreciate is that it is very “1985.” The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, more cohesive and with greater density than the 1983. It is focused and, despite the aromatics, feels vivacious and lively all the way through to the finish. Fact is, this is as good as the 1982 Sociando-Mallet and represents one of my favorite wines of the decade. Tasted at the vertical tasting at Sociando-Mallet. (NM)" (03/2019)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It seems as if everyone who draws fruit off the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard, that great valley floor site south of St. Helena near the Mondavi winery, turns out something totally prodigious. Alpha Omega has certainly done it with their 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon. The wine has notes of blackberry, pen ink, lead pencil shavings, charcoal, unsmoked cigar tobacco, and blackberries. It is huge, massive and rich, with incredible purity, balance and overall equilibrium. The wine saturates the mouth but is not heavy and shows that extraordinary, striking purity and intensity of what we all consider a world-class, great, great wine. It is approachable now, but it really won’t hit its peak for another 7-8 years, and last three decades or more. (RP)" (10/2015)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Pinot Noir Freestone-Occidental comes mostly from younger vines at the Occidental property but is made with the same attention to detail as the other wines in the portfolio, using free-run juice. Its nose is an aromatic well, offering crushed blueberries, charcuterie, Earl Grey tea leaves, graphite, saline, bitter orange peel and potpourri aromas. In the mouth, it explodes with lush fruits that give way after their initial rush to bitter, citrusy, minerally accents. It has a fine grain, seamless freshness and long, layered finish.
