Alma 4 started as a tiny project of four friends at viticulture school. Over the last 20 years that tiny “school project” has grown into one of the more sought-after boutique sparkling wine producers of South America. This is 100% Chardonnay sourced from high elevation, cool climate sites in the Uco and Tupungato valleys. The soils of the vineyards are a mix of calcareous stones, gravel and sands. 20% of the wine was fermented in 500L oak barrels and Malolactic fermentation was suppressed. It is made in the traditional method, spending 30 months on lees....

2018 Catena Zapata "White Stones - Adrianna Vineyard" Chardonnay Mendoza (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $120) (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $120)
New!
98 points James Suckling: "A very subtle yet intense White Stones on the nose with stone, bone, lemon-rind and dried-apple aromas that follow through to a full body that is very tight and closed, but shows a compact fruit structure of sliced mangoes and cooked apples. Vivid finish, turning to flamboyant minerality. In reserve still. Better in 2022." (04/2020) 98 points Wine Advocate: "The outstanding 2018 White Stones Chardonnay epitomizes the expression of the grape in the cooler-climate and high-altitude location of the Adrianna vineyard in Gualtalla...

98 points Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Adrianna Vineyard River Stones is the second vintage of the Malbec from the stonier part of the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary that is next to a dry river bed (the vineyard has 110 hectares that were planted in 1994). It fermented in open-top 500-liter oak barrels with full clusters. It was pressed before the end of fermentation, and it then finished fermenting without skins (like a white) and matured in 1,800-liter oak foudre for 18 months. It's a compact, super serious Malbec with concentration and power, great bala...

2017 Catena Zapata "White Bones - Adrianna Vineyard" Chardonnay Mendoza (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $145) (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $145)
New!
99 points James Suckling: "This is really incredible now. Cooked apples, mustard flowers, minerals and hints of stone. Full-bodied yet vivid and expansive with lightness and energy on the palate. Eye-opening acidity. It goes on for minutes. A great white, as always. Drink or hold." (07/2019) 96 points Wine Advocate: "The nose of the 2017 White Bones Chardonnay jumps out of the glass with its forward personality and its balsamic aromas that mix aromatic herbs and a minty touch. It's more exuberant than the 2018 or any of the White Stones I tasted next t...

96 points Wine Advocate: "The Catena Zapata range comprises some single-vineyard wines, like the 2014 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard that comes from a plot of ungrafted vines planted in Altamira in 1996 using Malbec cuttings from the ancient Angélica vineyard. Cropped from a year that delivered moderate alcohol and notable acidity, it fermented with full clusters in 2,000- and 5,000-liter oak foudres with indigenous yeasts. It matured in French oak barrels for 24 months. This shows superbly and is open and expressive, very classical and elegant, f...

2019 Catena Zapata "White Bones - Adrianna Vineyard" Chardonnay Mendoza (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $135) (Pre-Arrival, Elsewhere $135)
New!
99 points James Suckling: "Honeysuckle, ripe pear and some dried apple. So perfumed. Full-bodied with incredible intensity and length. So much green-apple character and lots of flowers. Dried mango, too. The touch of flor growth in the barrel gives this unique character. Goes on for minutes on the finish. Endless, vibrant acidity. Minerally texture. Drink now or hold." (03/2021) 98 points Wine Advocate: "The very minty 2019 White Bones Chardonnay comes from select rows within Block 1 of the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary. The name refers to the soil ...

96 points Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard is produced with grapes from the vineyard that names it--a vineyard planted in 1997 in the Altamira zone of Valle de Uco. It's mostly Malbec with some 4% Cabernet Franc, but the two grapes fermented together. It has less Cabernet Franc than other years because 2013 was fresh enough that just that pinch provided enough of the character they are looking for. They call this "the most Malbec of our Malbecs" and it has the textbook aromas of violets and red berries with perfectly integra...
