Bid on this bottle of 2005 Schrader "Beckstoffer To Kalon CCS" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (100RP, 95WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon CCS (14.6% alcohol and 175 cases) is absolutely out of this world. I have given more perfect scores to this cuvée than any of the other Schrader wines. Made from Clone 4 with slight additions of Clone 6 and 337, it is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, like all these wines from the Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard. This wine has a glorious nose of licorice, cedar wood, vanillin, creme de cassis, blackberry and graphite. Super-rich and velvety, with sweet, supple tannins, an opulent full-bodied mouthfeel, and a skyscraper-like finish, this prodigious wine is drinking beautifully, and just now coming into its adolescence. Peppery and precise but not green, with outstanding dark fruit and violet intensity accentuated by an electric impression of energy. It has that classic earthy, gravelly minerality that’s the hallmark of this terroir as well a full-bodied, concentrated, yet backward vibe on the palate. Jeb Dunnuck: "The best blocks of this vineyard suffered due to the heat in the vintage, so this includes more fruit from the deeper soils, hence the wine is more plush and forward, yet no less impressive, and has tons of ripe dark fruit, dark chocolate, roasted herbs, and underbrush-like aromas and flavors. With full-bodied richness, a powerful, mouthfilling texture, and sweet tannins, it’s a brilliant 2017 I’d be thrilled to have in the cellar. Drink bottles any time over the coming 20+ years." Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In contrast to the more linear, structured, but massive 2001, the 2002 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is pure fruit-bomb material, but stunningly proportioned, beautifully pure, with notes of melted chocolate, blackcurrant jam, sweet black cherries, licorice, camphor and charcoal. Very full-bodied, like the 2001, but much more lavishly fruited, it is more accessible and hedonistically, as well as intellectually, satisfying. If the 2001 is the long-distance runner, this comes across more like a middle-distancer. It had performed fabulously well since it was released by the winery, and even though it’s still an adolescent in terms of its evolution, this wine is a head-turner in wine tastings, and a spectacular effort from Napa. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1975 Heitz Cellar "Fay" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (94JG). John Gilman: "It had been five years since I last had a bottle of the 1975 Fay Vineyard bottling of cabernet sauvignon from the Heitz family, but in this last year I have had the good fortune to drink the wine on three occasions and found it to be stellar on each visit. The deep and very pure nose offers up a still fairly youthful mélange of red and black cherries, chipotle peppers, cigar smoke, a touch of red curry, lead pencil, petroleum jelly and a lovely base of soil tones. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and full-bodied, with a beautiful core of vivid fruit, plenty of Rutherford dust soil tones, still a touch of tannin and a long, tangy and perfectly balanced finish that closes with excellent grip and complexity. A classic wine that time never seems to touch- perhaps due to its thirteen percent alcohol level? 94+" (08/2015)

From the winery: "Exceptional high-elevation vineyards in the Howell Mountain appellation produce intensely concentrated grapes for this wine. Soils are volcanic in origin and consist of two main types; the first is decomposed volcanic ash called tufa, and the second is red volcanic rock and clay that is high in iron. Both are nutrient poor, which stresses the vines, producing intense and structured wines from small clusters and berries. The altitude, climate, and soils combine to create a classic mountain Cabernet Sauvignon with incredible concentration, texture, and structure."

Vinous: "The 2009 La Muse is a rich, sumptuous wine bursting with dark plums, black, cherries, graphite, espresso, spices and licorice. It shows gorgeous balance from start to finish. Persistent veins of minerality frame the long, beautifully articulate, creamy finish. This is a deceptively accessible wine today, but there is so much underlying power and sheer structure that I will not be surprised if it shuts down in the bottle. Vinous: "The 2016 Screaming Eagle is a positively stunning wine. An intense bouquet gives way to a wine of explosive energy and huge textural depth. Graphite, crushed rocks, menthol, sage and dark spice open up gradually in this reticent, brooding Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2016 is a towering, statuesque wine of the very highest level. That is the good news. The slightly less good news is that it will need a number of years in bottle to be at its very best. I wouldn't dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. Vinous: "A totally dazzling wine, Ric Forman's 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is easily one of the wines of the vintage. Today, the 2013 is dense, powerful and explosive, with fabulous energy and tons of sheer intensity. Graphite, smoke, tobacco and layers of dark-fleshed fruit all open up in the glass. This is the first vintage to incorporate a dollop of Malbec. The 2013 has just been bottled. I will not be surprised at all if it merits a higher rating at some point in the future. Even better from bottle than it was from barrel, Ric Forman's 2013 is a super-classic, old-school Napa Cabernet to treasure for the next three decades. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The prodigious 2007 Harlan Estate reminds me of a hypothetical blend of the 2002 with a touch of the controversial 1997. Dense plum/purple-colored with sweet aromas of barbecue smoke, blueberries, blackberries, cassis, licorice, hot rocks and subtle oak, it is a splendidly opulent, pure wine with a skyscraper-like texture as well as stunningly deep fruit that expands gracefully across the palate. The finish lasts nearly a full minute. Because of its overwhelming richness and sweet tannins, this brilliant wine seems to be approachable now, but I suspect further nuances and complexity will emerge after 4-5 years in the bottle. This wine is going from strength to strength since I first tasted it prior to bottling. Now a perfect wine, the incredible perfume of blueberries, black raspberries and cassis, along with white flowers and camphor is extraordinarily fragrant and intense. A rich, explosive wine, the 2012 captures the essence of the year in its racy, voluptuous fruit and enveloping personality. Raspberry jam, spices, flowers and cinnamon meld into the super-expressive, pliant finish. Winemaker Benoit Touquette has done a fabulous job with the 2012. This gem is as good as it gets for the money in Napa Valley. Quite surprisingly, Jack Quinn remains a real insiders' wine, although I can't imagine that will be the case for too much longer. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1970 Charles Krug "Vintage Selection" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. An absolutely superb example of mature California Cabernet Sauvignon. Not everyone is aware that Charles Krug was one of a handful of "First Growth" wineries in the 1950s and '60s, producing some of the best red wine in California's history. Founded in 1861, the Charles Krug Winery was the first in Napa Valley, sold to Cesare and Rosa Mondavi in 1943. When Cesare died in 1959, their sons took the helm, Robert as General Manager and Peter as Vice President. In 1966, Peter took over the role as President and Robert moved on to start his own winery in Oakville.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The extraordinary Harlan Estate, which I awarded 100 points seven years ago, offers no justifiable reason to doubt its perfect score. It is still a baby, with an inky purple color and notes of smoky camphor intermixed with creme de cassis, Asian soy and a hint of cedar beginning to emerge as well as some espresso and subtle damp forest floor notes. The wine has awesome intensity, a full-bodied mouthfeel, a skyscraper-like texture, and a finish that goes on for close to a minute. This is a perfect wine, still youthful and young, and not even in full adolescence as of 2012. It has 40 or more years ahead of it, but should hit its plateau of full maturity in another 5-10 years. The nose is wrapped around a core of red fruit and subtle spice. Upon entry, a spherical density expands into lush, vibrant warmth.
