The wonderful Glengoyne distillery is always one to keep an eye. Built in 1833, it was sold by Archiball Macllelan to the Lang Brothers where it remained until 1965 when it was purchased by a predecessor organization to Edrington Group. In 2003, it was sold to blenders and bottlers Ian Macleod and they've rightfully made Glengoyne a worldwide brand. They're famous for their sherried malt and it's rare to see a butt make it out of their warehouses under anyone else's label. That's why we were so excited to see this pop up and when we tasted it we knew we ...

The Old Malt Cask line of single cask single malts was created by the Laing brothers in 1998. They've since bottled countless legendary single malt and continue to surprise and delight connoisseurs with their diverse range of exceptionally selected single casks. Unlike K&L's Exclusive single casks, Old Malt Cask is traditionally bottled at 100 proof, but always without chillfiltration or coloring of any kind. The Laings selected a diverse range of malts to celebrate 25 years in the single cask business, picking out choice casks and bottling them in the g...

This exceptional find is one of the very best values K&L has ever been able to offer. Glenrothes is truly one of Speyside's most prized distillers, and its extremely unusual for them to let go of heavily sherried stocks, let alone something that's aged over 18 years. This one was distilled in February of 2005 and aged for 18 years in a first fill sherry butt. The results speak for themselves, a dense powerful malt style full of powerful spice and complex sherry. The Glenrothes Distillery was founded in the town of Rothes in 1879 by James Stuart & Co., ow...

A good nicely aged Mortlach is something we wish we could offer more readily. Make it stupidly drinkable and at an unbelievably generous price, and we’ll drop nearly everything else. This attractive little refill hogshead is a dreamy, offering malt driven style from the Beast of Dufftown. You can visit a bona fide Fairy Village in Dufftown these days or the famous Giant's Chair, but the wonderful distillery in the gully by the stream to the south of town is arguably the town's most magical spot. The Mortlach makes an extremely unique malt. The distillati...

First introduced more than a quarter of a century ago in 1997, Ardbeg 17 Years Old was one of the initial bottlings to emerge from the Distillery after a period of closure. This malt possessed a unique combination of delicacy and unmistakable Ardbeg character. It quickly captured the hearts of the Committee and set an extraordinary standard for the future of Ardbeg whisky production. When Ardbeg retired the 17 in 2004, no one expected that plans would quietly unfold for its triumphant return. Esteemed Master Distiller, Dr. Bill Lumsden, meticulously rec...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A port cask finish gives this Scotch a copper penny hue. The aroma suggests baked apple, while the palate has a chewy, concentrated vanilla-oak profile, leading to walnut, leather and espresso. The rounded finish sings with sherry and spice. Adding water coaxes out baked apple sweetness and dials back the oak. (KN)" (12/2017) 91 points Whisky Advocate: "This is the ultimate Port-wood expression from Balvenie and has been finished in 30-year-old port pipes. Distilled at Aultmore distillery in 2008 and aged for 15 years in a single Sherry Butt, which yielded a total of only 422 bottles. Situated on the edge of the Foggie Moss just north of Keith in the heart of Speyside, Aultmore’s fermentation process lends itself to the identifiable ‘fragrant on the nose, substantial on the palate’ characteristic. Released in 2022, the Balvenie 16 year old is matured in American oak before being transferred to French casks that once held Pineau des Charentes, an aromatic white wine fortified with grape brandy that often has honeyed, fruity tones that evoke sherry. The distiller says that on the nose, "beautifully balanced light floral notes from lotus and geranium flowers dance between hints of fresh meadow grass and pealed apple skin." While on the palate, "An energising zing from tangy lemon rind and grapefruit meet the delicate subtle sweetness of glazed fruits...

92 points Whisky Advocate: "Sweet and smoky sherry wood, like the woodsmoke from charred butts, partnered with aromas of cinnamon, nutmeg, black cherry, malt loaf, and a hint of coffee grounds. This is a midnight dram, full of character and intrigue; a thick syrupy mouthfeel with black currant, cherry Dr. Pepper, clove, pepper, and black coffee, followed by Brazil nut, cassis, oak, and smoke. A lengthy, dark fruity finish sees you through till morning. (JM, Winter-2021)" K&L Notes: Distillery tasting notes: "Colour: Bright gold. Nose (undiluted): Sweet,...

96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "Opening aromas are of sea breeze, cigar smoke, oak and malted barley; air contact releases light caramel, fudge, cocoa bean, burnt candle wick and heather. Entry is the most complex of any whisky; midpalate soars on oak, spirit and grain tastes. The greatest distilled spirit of this generation. Buy whatever you can find. *Best Buy* (PP)" (11/2008) 94 points Whisky Advocate: "Introduced to the Highland Park portfolio in 1997. 95 points Whisky Advocate: "Part of the permanent Ardbeg range since 2008, Corryvreckan is created from a blend of standard Ardbeg and Ardbeg aged in virgin French Limousin oak casks. Smoky bacon and seaweed, plus dark berries, prickly spices, walnuts, lemon, and sweet peat on the nose. Sweet and savory on the palate, with more lively spice, woodsmoke, phenols, and licorice. Whisky Advocate: "Earthy notes of dried leaves, wet wool, and a hint of maltiness start things off on the nose, then citrus and red apple. The palate is sweet and balanced, offering warm apple tart, cinnamon, cooked blueberries, raisins, toffee, and Christmas cake, with a slight and appealing hint of soapiness. A lengthy finish brings chocolate cake, glazed orange, pfeffernusse cookies, and winter spice. A delicious holiday warmer. 93 points Whisky Advocate: "Part of the core range from GlenDronach, Parliament has been aged in a mix of oloroso and Pedro Ximenez sherry casks and is non-chill filtered. Quite sweet sherry on the nose, with fresh leather, nutty peach notes, cloves, and pepper. Rich sherried fruits on the full palate, with more pepper, ginger, and plain chocolate. The finish is long, with licorice and oak tannins. Not to be rushed! (GS, Summer 2017)"

Rites of Passage by Epicurean Selection has fired the opening salvo in the war for the future of independent bottling. Delivering casks of the utmost quality with respectable age stagements and carefully managed wood selection at prices that are fair is no easy task and many new bottles don't even seem to be trying on the last part. This 13 year from Mannochmore shows, more than the Blue Chip distilleries of ROP's other releass, what exactly we can look forward to in the long run. Whisky Advocate: "Aged in American oak, Pedro Ximénez, and oloroso casks. The nose is nutty, with treacle, and developing geranium aromas. Prunes and dates, plus almonds on the buttery palate. Drying in the finish, with nutmeg and wood spice. (GS, Winter 2018)" K&L Notes: The GlenAllachie Distillery was built in 1967 outside of Aberlour. It quietly produced fine single malt without much fanfare until it's closure by Invergordon Distillers in 1987. Eventually, the distillery was sold to Pernod Ricard and began churning out malt again for their range of ...

Whisky Advocate: "While younger Glengoyne whiskies are enjoyable but often fairly straight-forward in flavor, the older expressions develop nicely in depth. Regardless of age, there’s always a creamy maltiness as the foundation of the whisky. For this expression, notes of honey, cookie dough, dry spice notes (vanilla, cinnamon) and soft fruit (citrus, apple) round out the palate. This whisky is clean, polished, and very drinkable. A new addition to the Glengoyne line, and very welcome. (JH, Spring 2005)" K&L Notes: The Glengoyne 21 is one of the biggest...

A whisky born of an obsession, Dr. Bill’s obsession for the culture, fashion and food of Japan. The contradictory and multi-faceted nature of Tokyo inspired Dr. Bill to reflect it into a whisky. After a decade of searching, Dr. Bill finally managed to source some casks from one of Japan’s most sought-after trees, Mizunara oak. The result is a whisky designed to bottle some of the wonders of Tokyo.

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This Islay single malt is all about the peat. Golden in the glass, the distinctly smoky scent hints at vanilla and honey underneath. Expect a big billow of smoke from the first sip, underpinned by subtle hints of honey, vanilla and sherry sweetness. The concentrated peat smoke leads right into the drying finish, plus hints of black pepper, iodine and spearmint astringency. Adding water creates an even bigger and richer effect, bringing more caramel center stage, finishing long with a sprinkle of cinnamon and cocoa powder. This easy sipper is a 18-year-old single malt rested in ex-Sherry casks. 91 points Whisky Advocate: "Initially, a fleeting aroma of farmyard, followed by furniture polish, spice, apple peel, and cocktail cherries. Smooth on the palate, with dried fruit, chewy oak, raisins, and more cocktail cherries. Spicy dark berries, ginger, and licorice in the finish. (GS, Fall 2020)" K&L Notes: This age statement of Macallan's Double Cask series came online in July 2020, along with the 18-year iteration. Ardbeg's Note: ABV 48.2% Color Amber Cask Innovative Cask charring technique Nose Earthy, dusty, and biscuity on the nose, this is a most curious Ardbeg, almost from an alternative universe. The sooty/tarry notes are clear but restrained, and balanced by silky vanilla. Taste Peppery and warming, preceding an explosion of fiery, spicy flavors: Chili chocolate, bittersweet mocha, briar wood, birch tar, black pepper and smoked artichokes. The tarry notes build to a crescendo of rich, smoky flavors, with an incredible, lingering aftertaste of charcoal almon...

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The bouquet is austere and leathery with curious aromas of beeswax, vegetable oil and oaky resin. Palate entry is focused on the resin; midpalate is splendidly multilayered and offers elements of black pepper, dried orange blossom, honeysuckle, dried fruit, sage, fennel and confections. Aftertaste is deep and unabashedly sweet and honeyed. *Superb, Highly Recommended*" (12/2009) Whisky Advocate: "Both bourbon and sherry casks were used for aging.
