Guillermo Erickson Sauza is a fifth generation tequila maker who hand-crafts beautiful, artisanal tequila at his century-old estate. His tartabuelo (great-great-grandfather), Don Cenobio was the first person to export tequila to the US, way back in the 1860s, starting his own brand in the 1870s. That tequila (Sauza) was passed down the generations before being sold by Guillermo's grandfather in 1976. Tequila Fortaleza is a return to his roots and to the traditional methods, including the use of a stone mill called a Tahona to crush the agave, a small, c...

The oldest expression from Carlos Camarena's Tapatio brand is finally available stateside. Rich and butterscotchy and with hints of black pepper and citrus, it is distilled exclusively from perfectly matured agave at the famous La Altena distillery in Arandas. When they tell you how this stuff was made, it just boggles the mind. Distilled in 2000, this is the official SECOND batch of Excelencia. It was filled into the same barrels as the first directly after they were dumped and aged for four years before being transferred into glass containers. There it...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Hitting all the right notes, this 18-month-aged añejo melds tropical fruit and fresh-cut apple with silky vanilla and agave nectar, finishing on a brisk peppery-cinnamon note. *Best of the Year Spirits 2016* (KN)" (05/2016)
Price: $59.99

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Close your eyes and you might think that’s tomato juice in the glass. It’s clear, but the fragrance is zesty, lemony and yes, fresh tomato-like. On the palate, dried oregano and green pepper come forward, plus a trace of tomato savoriness, and it finishes light, with lively lemon zest. It’s mouthwatering, with moderate alcohol feel. (KN)" (04/2014) K&L Notes: This is such great tequila that it is well worth spending the extra dough. All the bright agave floral notes jump out at you on the nose, and the palate packs a strong ...

This blanco is wonderfully supple with butterscotch flavors that come from the five day fermentation of the agave. There is no barrel aging yet it tastes so rich! Guillermo Erickson Sauza, a fifth-generation family member, produces Tequila Fortaleza using traditional techniques. This is a beautifully hand-crafted, stone-milled tequila. Tequila Fortaleza is produced entirely within the walls of their estate, using centuries-old traditional methods which, although very labor intensive, create a tequila that is unequaled in taste and smoothness. Using an ol...

This tequila is aged two to three years in oak barrels and has a beautiful silky smooth character that does añejo right: rich, but not cloyingly sweet. Guillermo Erickson Sauza, a fifth-generation member of the iconic family, produces Tequila Fortaleza, using traditional techniques. This is a beautiful, artisan, hand-crafted, stone milled tequila. Tequila Fortaleza is produced entirely within the walls of their estate, using centuries old traditional methods that create a tequila which is unequaled in taste and smoothness. Using an old oven with meter-th...

*96 points, Ultimate Spirits Challenge Top 100 of 2020* Ocho's tequilas are made by Carlos Camarena, a third-generation Tequilero, and Tequila Ambassador Tomas Estes. And each vintage—yes, these are vintage designated tequilas—comes from a single estate with its own mesoclimate, making them the most terroir-driven tequilas on the market. The NOM 1474 or Tequilera Los Alambiques actually represents the very same facility where the famous Tapatio and El Tesoro are made, the famous La Altena Distillery. This collaboration seeks to distill the purest form of...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The handpainted ceramic bottle is gorgeous, but so is what’s in the bottle: a blend of three- four- and five-year old Tequilas. Look for a deep amber hue and complex aromas that unfold jalapeño, brown sugar and cocoa. The palate-coating, slightly viscous palate opens with clove and coriander, warming to cocoa, browned butter, and sarsaparilla, and finishes on black pepper and cinnamon. The overall effect almost reads like a Tequila-based amaro. (KN)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: Grand Mayan is a rare Extra Añejo from the exceptional...

Enrique Fonseca distilled this expression in early Spring 2010, with three-quarters of the bottling made in a double-copper column still with removed plates to achieve a lower distillation proof and the remaining quarter made in an alembic pot still. Half of the run was then stored in American white oak previously used to age California red wine, and the remaining half barreled in used dark French oak. The casks were then stored for seven years at 3,800 feet elevation in a cool-climate subterranean barrel room.

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Though it’s light straw in the glass, with hardly any color, the flavor is robust and complex. Scented with perky black pepper and spice, the palate echoes the pepper up front, followed by a fleeting meaty umami note midpalate and a long finish that boasts sparks of ginger and cayenne. Aged eight months." (05/2015)
Price: $49.99

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "This lively, bright Tequila will please purists. A light hand with the oak means a straw hue and brisk aromas of jalapen?o and citrus. The palate melds flavors of bell pepper, fresh rosemary and roasted jalapen?o that lead into mild coconut and graphite notes on the midpalate, finishing with a fresh herb exhale." K&L Notes: Ocho's tequilas are made by Carlos Camarena, a third-generation Tequilero, and Tequila Ambassador Tomas Estes, and each vintage—yes, these are vintage designated tequilas—comes from a single estate with it...

From the distillery of Enrique Fonseca, the man behind the legendary K&L Fuenteseca, comes this value-priced liter-sized tequila that seems almost too good to be true. We may not sell the sheer amount of Cimmaron that we should, simply because people still wonder why it's so cheap. Don't let the price tag sway you--this is clean, fresh, easy-drinking tequila made from 100% agave that is definitely up to Enrique's high standards. This blanco is cleaner and lighter than the Pura Sangre blanco (also from Enrique) and mixes into Palomas like a breeze. You'll...

90-91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Look for a pale straw hue and mild agave nectar aroma. The palate is both zingy and sweet, offering distinct notes of mint, bell pepper, fresh basil, lemon pepper and lime peel, plus fleeting vanilla into the cooling menthol exhale." (05/2018) K&L Notes: El Tesoro de Don Felipé Tequila began in 1937 when the brand's namesake founded the still traditional distillery in Los Altos (the highlands) of Jalisco, Mexico. The methods implemented by Don Felipé de Jesús Camarena remain intact today, including traditional hornos (ove...

Tears of Llorona Extra Añejo Tequila (1L) (Local Delivery Only - cannot ship)
Top Pick!
The ultra-rare stocks that go into the exquisite Tears of Llorona come from Master Tequilero German Gonzalez's personal storage. Distilled from hand-selected piñas at La Tequilana, Tears is aged for at least 4.5 years and is supposedly "double barreled." Gonzalez uses his own proprietary yeast strain to ferment the agave, and it is distilled in copper pots, unlike some of Tequilanas' other tequilas, which go through column stills. Each cask is hand selected and blended in ultra-small batches. While I tend to lean away from older tequila (because I don't ...

The follow up to the unbelievable first batch of Huerta Singular, the Las Antenas highlights a completely different terroir with the same goal of creating a completely unique example of blanco tequila. The over-ripe pinto Blue Weber agave for this batch was grown entirely in the mineral-laden caliche soils of Vista Hermosa in Michoacán. The ground is rich in calcium carbonate at the high elevation field. Just over five thousand feet from the sea level, the agave was left to ripen in the field after the quixote was cut resulting in an ultra-ripe "pinto" o...

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Although billed as a joven, this Tequila is blended with a touch of añejo. The end result is extraordinarily smooth, with a very sweet, fruity, almost wine-like nose but a bold, pure peppery flavor that finishes cleanly. The packaging is gift-worthy, presenting the bottle in a gold-and-robin’s egg blue box, like a precious jewel. (KN)" (05/2013) K&L Notes: Casa Dragones is 100% Blue Agave Joven Tequila. Hand-made in small batches using a multiple distillation process for a clean, extra soft taste. The Maestro Tequilero hand-...
Price: $274.99

Casa Tequileña is owned and operated by Enrique Fonesca, known as El Arquitecto, a fifth-generation grower and master distiller who holds one of the largest plots of agave in the industry. This añejo is made to showcase the oak without overshadowing the agave. The nose is amazing! Again, subdued and needing to be coaxed, but incredible when it finally arrives. Nutty aromas with toasted vanilla, but neither rich nor oaky. Warm baking spices on the palate, which is incredibly lean for an añejo! This is a blend of two- and three-year-old tequilas aged exclu...

Siembra Valles Ancestral is a project conceived of a love of history and a desire to know tequila from its roots, celebrating its true identity and a curiosity of what the past once tasted like. With agave untouched by machine, the Ancestral boasts the complexity of nature's flavors and the skills of tequilero ancestry. It begins its journey through time in the pristine blue agave fields nurtured by the Rosales family’s team of expert cultivators, jimadores, and a lowland terroir. The fruitful plants can credit their rich flavors to a pesticide-free land...

From the distillery of Enrique Fonseca, the man behind the legendary K&L Fuenteseca, comes this value-priced label of liter-sized tequila that seems almost too good to be true. I'm willing to bet we'll have a problem selling the Cimarron selections, rather than the ridiculous success we should experience, simply because people will wonder why it's so cheap? Don't let the price tag sway you, however -- this is clean, fresh, easy-drinking tequila made from 100% agave that is definitely up to Enrique's high standards. The reposado is mellow and soft on the ...

Great news for you blanco tequila fans! You can finally polish off that last bit of ArteNOM 1079 you've been hoarding since the batch switched over more than a year ago. Your replacement tequila has finally arrived. David Suro's new Siembra Valles project switches the juice from the Vivancos at NOM 1414, over to NOM 1123 and the distillate of Tequila Cascahuin. This is the best thing to happen to blanco tequila fans in years because this is one of the roundest, fruitiest, soft and plump blanco tequilas I've ever tasted. It's full of sweet agave notes, cr...

The magnificent Casa Dragones has been blowing it up in the high-end tequila market. They've finally made their exquisite lowland tequila available to the masses. This surprisingly approachable blanco has all the finesse and structure of the Joven, but without the sweet vanilla and spice oak. This shows tons of apple and pear, with slight whiffs of the minerally vegetable that we expect from a lowland. On the palate it's clean and bright with lovely sweet fruit and only a slight cracked pepper quality. Ultimately, a fine follow up to a very difficult to ...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Soft, light and crisp, this six-month-aged reposado is bright in the glass and offers mild honey, pear and white flower scents. It's soft and fruity on the palate, accented by ginger and white pepper. Though an easy sipper, this Tequila would elevate margaritas too. *Top 100 Spirits of 2015* (KN)" (05/2015)

This unique Tequila is the latest inistallment in the wonderful ArteNOM lilne. Coming from the famous, historic, and family owned Cascahuin Distillery in El Arenal, Jalisco, you know it's good. This blanco actually spends 28 days resting in a barrel that previously held Don Amado Mezcal. It's technically still a blanco as it spends less than the 30 days required to lable reposado. There is a hint of smoke and wildness that you don't normally find in the tequilas of Cascahuin. A beautiful addition to an already incredible lineup.

It can hardly get more pure than this--basically, this is Fortaleza Blanco direct from the still. Distillery tasting notes: "Aromas of fruit, baked fully-ripened agave, green olive, and earth are invitingly present. Slightly brighter and a touch more rustic than the regular blanco, the accents of butter, olive, earth, black pepper, and vegetal qualities in the flavor are enhanced because it comes straight from our small copper pot still, without adding water prior to bottling."

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "A mild whiff of tropical fruit leads the nose. The palate is light and mildly sweet with a trace of coconut, finishing peppery, crisp and a bit fiery. Aged for six months in former Napa Cabernet barrels. *Top 100 Spirits 2018* (KN)" (05/2018) K&L Notes: Codigo 1530 is private recipe tequila that has been contracted by a family in Los Cabos for almost a decade, before finally becoming a commercial product in the U.S. Made at NOM 1500 by Tequileria las Juntas, the product was nameless for many years, existing solely as the hou...

The exceptional Cascahuin Distillery in the city of El Arenal is one of the finest in the Lowland. Not only are they committed to quality like few other distillers in Jalisco, they've been crucial in the re-creation of the ancestral style of tequilas for Siembra Spirits as well as recently constructed a Tahona press on their property. They use only the finest fully mature agave and represent an authenticity that is lost in almost all but a tiny handful of tequila producers.

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Billed as the world's first white añejo, it indeed has an unusual clear appearance, hence the name 'claro.' Created to celebrate Don Julio's 70th anniversary, this limited edition bottling, aged for 18 months, has powerful charred oak, honey and vanilla notes, and a banana-like finish. (KN)" (05/2013) K&L Notes: "Don't judge a book by its cover" is the applicable anecdote here. It's a totally unique product from the master distiller at Don Julio. This is anejo tequila that has had its color filtered out for the world's first...

Siembra Azul tequilas are the product of industry veteran David Suro, who has been working in the tequila business for thirty years. He contracts his Siembra Azul tequila from the Vivanco family distillery in Arandas, otherwise known as NOM 1414 (the same as the ArteNOM reposado and Gran Dovejo tequila). I think our best tequilas at K&L are from Feliciano Vivanco, but it seems that David took his production methods to the extreme, specifying even the type of jima from the agave production - the process in which the penca (the agave leaves) are pulled fro...

96-100 points and one of the WIne Enthusiast's Top 50 Spirits of 2009: "The bouquet features wonderful aromas of caramel, cream, pastry dough and nutmeg with a background hint of honeyed peanuts. Entry is spicy and full-bodied; the midpalate displays a trace of vanillin that supports the more vibrant flavors of brine, salt, green vegetable and green pepper. Finishes clean, a touch smoky and delicately spiced. A classic añejo Tequila. Delicious." (02/09)

The excellent Cascahuin Distillery in the town or El Arenal is one of Jalisco's very best. The Rosales family is committed to quality and traditional techniques like few of their competitors. The Aguila Superior brand is made at their excellent facility under the watchful eye of Maestro Tequilero Salvador Rosales using the same time tested techniques that the distillery has since 1904. The agave for the Aguila brand was planted and harvested by the brand themselves insuring the quality of every pina. The average age is approximately 8 years and they are ...

El Tesoro "K&L Exclusive" Single Barrel #60-277 Reposado Tequila (750ml)
Top Pick!
Carlos Camarena needs no introduction to those familiar with fine Tequila, but for those of you who are still getting your feet wet: he's the man behind a number of outstanding brands on today's market; those bearing the NOM number 1139 on the side label. His father first founded La Altena in 1937. While most distilleries have opted for modern efficiencies and mechanical shredders, in the case of El Tesoro, the agave is still cooked in traditional ovens, 100% tahona crushed, fermented in open wooden vats, and double distilled to proof so nothing is ever ...

A blanco with a little extra bite, created with the bartender in mind. The distiller's notes: "While shaping the flavor profile for Siembra Valles Blanco, the team at Cascahuin kept coming back to taste the spirit at still-proof. The Rosales family has developed a slow distillation process that yields a Tequila at 92 proof. Lastly, Valles High Proof is rested for 11 months in glass demijohns for a truly unique experience." Now produced using Cascahuin's new Tahona press.

One of the most vibrant and affordable new mezcales to hit our shelf in years, the Tosba Espadin has the tangy character of the agave on the palate and a healthy dollop of smoke to balance it all out. Tosba is imported by Elisandro Gonzalez-Molina and his cousin Edgar Gonzalez-Ramirez; both who are from the small village of San Cristóbal Lachirioag in Oaxaca. It was their hope to bring the wonderful spirits of their pueblo to the U.S. market and we're very happy they've done so.

NOM 1579 - distilled by master Tequilero Felipe Camarena, the maker of El Pandillo and G4 tequilas. Agave forward and smooth as silk. Distilled on copper pot stills and aged for 18 months in American oak. The deft use of used barrels allows the agave to shine despite considerable time in oak. A great anejo for those who love to still taste the tequila underneath.

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "This Tequila offers mild roasted agave and lime peel aromas. The soft palate opens with earthy almond and cocoa tones, perked up with lime-peel zing and clove heat. Best Buy." Wine Spectator: "Smooth, peppery and clean. Produced by the Orendain family, whose members, according to importer Gimenez, are among the most experienced distillers in Jalisco. (MD)" (05/2003) K&L Notes: The Arette Reposado is one of our absolute favorite tequila. Here's why: it smells like fresh agave, despite the barrel aging, which only adds baking...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A rare extra-aged Tequila that smells more like the agave than the barrel, mixing agave and faint jalapeño aromas. The palate is light, a refreshing mix of agave, fresh jalapeño and bell peppers, while the drying finish shows warming clove, cocoa and chocolate-covered cherry. (KN)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: 100% blue agave aged for 36 months in American white oak barrels. Each bottle of this limited production tequila is decorated by hand.

The 44 in Avion’s Reserva 44 refers to the number of months that Avion has aged this tequila (which translates to 3.6 years). (KN)" (05/2014) K&L Notes: Very rarely does a product like this come to our attention without a sneer or a snicker.
