Yuu Baal Jabali Artisanal Mezcal (750ml) (Elsewhere $180) (Elsewhere $180)
Top Pick!
Yuu Baal has been critical in the development of American's appreciation of Mezcal. The 100% Mexican-owned company is a group of producers from 3 different villages known for exceptional Mezcal production. The Jabali Mezcal, a beautiful example of this wild variety, comes from an exceedingly rare agave that is also difficult to ferment and distill. Made in the traditional artisanal method, these ripe, wild agaves are roasted in underground ovens before being milled by hand with wooden mallets. This labor-intensive milling helps bring out the most intense...

Yuu Baal Tobala Artisanal Mezcal (750ml) (Elsewhere $128) (Elsewhere $128)
Top Pick!
Yuu Baal's selection of wild agave expressions is one of the best we've ever tasted (meaning the agave species must be foraged and found and cannot be cultivated or farmed). Tobala is usually the ultimate test of a Oaxacan distiller's craft, and in this case the Yuu Baal passes with flying colors. There are textbook Tobala notes of earth and sweet, plant-like flavors that morph into a rather peppery note on the finish. It's an elegant expression of the famed wild agave on all levels. Cooked in a concave stone oven, milled by stone roller, wild fermented ...

This K&L exclusive is made of rare agaves that were roasted, mashed, fermented, and distilled together. Sierra Negra is an Agave Americana, akin to Arroqueño, but with a shorter lifespan (12-15 years) and thinner leaves which have a distinct black spine running up and down their edges. It grows wildly, but is also cultivated by a select few intrepid souls. Alberto Martinez, producer of this incredible mezcal is one of the few distillers left in Santa Catarina Alborradas. The altitude is about 6,500 feet above sea level at the distillery and Alberto's fie...

Yuu Baal Madrecuixe Artisanal Mezcal (750ml) (Elsewhere $128) (Elsewhere $128)
Top Pick!
Yuu Baal is one of the best new mezcal labels we've seen from Oaxaca in the last few years, originating from the town of San Juan del Rio, one of the region's most well-regarded distillation centers. The brand (which translates to "earth" and "fire" in Zapotec) also incorporates spirits from San Luis del Rio, Santa Ana del Rio, and Santo Domingo Albarradas in what has immediately become one of the most diverse and high-quality line-ups we carry. Madrecuixe is one of the most coveted and complex of the mezcal wild agaves, and the immediate aromas from the...

Yuu Baal Tepeztate Artisanal Mezcal (750ml) (Elsewhere $136) (Elsewhere $136)
Top Pick!
Yuu Baal's wild Tepeztate expression is perhaps one of the most polished top-shelf mezcals we've ever tasted, perfectly balancing the line between classic agave spirit flavor and more exotic notes of earth, spice, and savory. There's a seamless note of black pepper, roasted agave, scorched earth, and sweet agave perfume all the way from front to back. Those searching for elegance, look no further. Yuu Baal's Tepe is cooked in a concave stone oven, milled by stone roller, naturally fermented in oak vats, and double-distilled in copper pots. No longer avai...

Don Julio "1942" Añejo Tequila (750ml)
Top Pick!
98 points Wine Enthusiast: "A stunning limited-edition añejo. The golden color and caramel scent hint at what’s to come: sweet agave flavor, a lingering whisper of smoke and mellow notes of tropical fruit, Sauternes and butterscotch. (KN)" (05/2011) K&L Notes: Cannot be shipped, will call pick up only. Don Julio is particularly proud of this limited-edition Añejo, and rightfully so: "I established my first tequila distillery in 1942 and to commemorate that very special year, I have created Don Julio 1942 as a unique and limited edition I personally sel...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This spirit has a complex, rewarding array of flavors. The aroma is very smoky and spicy, evoking barbecue. But on the tongue, this vibrant-gold reposado layers vanilla and orange-peel flavors with a warm hint of toffee, and the smoke only comes through on the finish. Comes packaged in a striking, gift-worthy square-shouldered bottle with impressive heft. Aged nine months." (05/2012) K&L Notes: Frank Mendez called me one day and told me he'd like to come present his new family project: Gran Dovejo tequila. While Frank and hi...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Inside the handsome, hefty bottle are spice-rack aromas. But the flavors are light and complex, interlacing honey with lime zest, mineral and faint white flowers that float off at the end. A top pick for pitchers of high-end margaritas. (KN)" (05/2014) K&L Notes: Frank Mendez called me one day and told me he'd like to come present his new family project: Gran Dovejo tequila. While Frank and his cousin don't come from a tequila making background, they consider themselves aficionados and feel the same exasperation I do toward ...

Made by mezcalero Hero Rodriguez in the village of Las Salinas, the ensemble #4 is a blend of espadin, barril, and cuishe agave that offers citrus, herbal notes, salty accents, and a flinty, mineral core of concentrated power all in one package. It's an incredible marriage of wild flavors that blends the fruity capabilities of agave distillates with the wild, herbaceous character of the desert's strangest species. It's one adventurous elixir.

Father and son team Felipe and Ageo are 3rd and 4th generation to produce excellent mezcal in Miahuatlan. Their small community of Mengoli de Morelos happens to have some of Oaxaca's best distillers. This area is renowned for the abundance of Karwainski (Madrecuixe, bicuixe, tobaxiche) and an unusual additional piece on their copper potstills called the "refrescador". This odd apparatus sits on top of the potstill like a mini water cooled column, though the Cortes do not use plates inside the apparatus. It catches and condenses the heaviest spirits as fo...

Another addition to K&L's ever-expanding selection of exclusive tequilas and mezcals, this micro-production, artisanal offering comes from one of the hidden gems of from our searches in the far reaches of mezcal country in Mexico. From the producer: "Rezpiral is a spirits label, project and fair trade practice that brings beautiful selections of the highest quality traditional artisanal single-batch (non-certified) Mezcals into a handful of places in the USA. At the core of the project is the embrace of an ethos that aims to respect and support the mult...

Erick Rodriguez is widely known as one of Mexico's most knowledgable and adventerous bottlers of Mezcal. His tiny shop, Almamezcalera, has become famous among the agave cognicenti and his selections are legendary. We're very lucky to have access to this tiny unusual batch of uncertified mezcal (bottled as aguardiente de agave). Maestro Patricio Hernandez cooks the piñas in a stone oven, then mills the cooked agave using a traditional tahona; to ferment, however, around 30% fresh pulque is added to the crushed agave in a pine vat (a 'tina'), almost like a...

Mezonte is a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting, supporting, and preserving the production and practices of traditional agave spirits of Mexico. The main objective is to create awareness of the cultural and biological value inherent in these incredible spirits. There's a particular emphasis on the spirits of Jalisco and Michoacan, but all agave spirits could be featured. The incredible organization began in a little bar in Guadalajara where Pedro Jiminez began to educate about these special spirits. Santos Juarez lives in Toliman, Jalis...

Enemigo 89, a rare clear añejo, is known by the name of 'Cristalino' in Mexico. The Tequila is aged traditionally for over a year, resting in custom-made American Oak barrels which infuse and color the liquid. The now amber liquid is then filtered using carbon and cellulose which removes the color, leaving behind the more delicate, mineral and floral notes circling the elegant agave. Enemigo 89 was the first ever and only clear añejo to ever win Double Gold at the prestigious San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Named 'eighty-nine' as a testament to ...

Take Lunazul's regular Anejo and give it a finishing in fresh Elijah Craig barrels and you've got this astounding product. Bottled as single barrels, each barrel yields a batch of roughly 280 unique bottles. The added wood impact of the Elijah Craig makes this Tequila perfect for anyone who prefers a style with a really heavy barrel influence. Once again, Lunazul's relationship with Heaven Hill pays huge dividends and allows them to get a product like this to your bar for an exceptionally reasonable price.

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "The aroma is fresh and bright, welcoming with pineapple and pear. The palate echoes those flavors, and surprises with a waft of smokiness too. All together, this fruity-smoky profile suggests charred pineapple, plus a vanilla and clove finish. (KN)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: Special Order Only! Will take 3-7 business days to receive this product before it can be shipped.

The “mother” of Agave karwinskii, the large and resinous Madrecuishe grows tall and proud in Miahuatlán. A long, cylindrical trunk (which harvested resembles a huge cigar) is topped with a tall, green bloom of leaves, spreading out from the trunk’s heart. From this trunk or stem, the Madrecuishe carries a lot of fiber alongside its highly concentrated sugars. A balance of fruity and vegetal notes is a hallmark of the distillate, implying everything from leafy green herbs to sweet carrots to raspberry seeds. An ideal example of this beloved varietal.
