Yuu Baal Jabali Artisanal Mezcal (750ml) (Elsewhere $180) (Elsewhere $180)
Top Pick!
Yuu Baal has been critical in the development of American's appreciation of Mezcal. The 100% Mexican-owned company is a group of producers from 3 different villages known for exceptional Mezcal production. The Jabali Mezcal, a beautiful example of this wild variety, comes from an exceedingly rare agave that is also difficult to ferment and distill. Made in the traditional artisanal method, these ripe, wild agaves are roasted in underground ovens before being milled by hand with wooden mallets. This labor-intensive milling helps bring out the most intense...

Yuu Baal Tobala Artisanal Mezcal (750ml) (Elsewhere $128) (Elsewhere $128)
Top Pick!
Yuu Baal's selection of wild agave expressions is one of the best we've ever tasted (meaning the agave species must be foraged and found and cannot be cultivated or farmed). Tobala is usually the ultimate test of a Oaxacan distiller's craft, and in this case the Yuu Baal passes with flying colors. There are textbook Tobala notes of earth and sweet, plant-like flavors that morph into a rather peppery note on the finish. It's an elegant expression of the famed wild agave on all levels. Cooked in a concave stone oven, milled by stone roller, wild fermented ...

Yuu Baal Madrecuixe Artisanal Mezcal (750ml) (Elsewhere $128) (Elsewhere $128)
Top Pick!
Yuu Baal is one of the best new mezcal labels we've seen from Oaxaca in the last few years, originating from the town of San Juan del Rio, one of the region's most well-regarded distillation centers. The brand (which translates to "earth" and "fire" in Zapotec) also incorporates spirits from San Luis del Rio, Santa Ana del Rio, and Santo Domingo Albarradas in what has immediately become one of the most diverse and high-quality line-ups we carry. Madrecuixe is one of the most coveted and complex of the mezcal wild agaves, and the immediate aromas from the...

Yuu Baal Tepeztate Artisanal Mezcal (750ml) (Elsewhere $136) (Elsewhere $136)
Top Pick!
Yuu Baal's wild Tepeztate expression is perhaps one of the most polished top-shelf mezcals we've ever tasted, perfectly balancing the line between classic agave spirit flavor and more exotic notes of earth, spice, and savory. There's a seamless note of black pepper, roasted agave, scorched earth, and sweet agave perfume all the way from front to back. Those searching for elegance, look no further. Yuu Baal's Tepe is cooked in a concave stone oven, milled by stone roller, naturally fermented in oak vats, and double-distilled in copper pots. No longer avai...

The follow up to the unbelievable first batch of Huerta Singular, the Las Antenas highlights a completely different terroir with the same goal of creating a completely unique example of blanco tequila. The over-ripe pinto Blue Weber agave for this batch was grown entirely in the mineral-laden caliche soils of Vista Hermosa in Michoacán. The ground is rich in calcium carbonate at the high elevation field. Just over five thousand feet from the sea level, the agave was left to ripen in the field after the quixote was cut resulting in an ultra-ripe "pinto" o...

Rey Campero "Tio Ramiro" Cuishe K&L Exclusive Single Batch Mezcal (750ml)
Top Pick!
This extremely rare batch of Cuishe is why we make a point of travelling to visit producers. Originally not for sale, we were able to taste this extremely special batch while at the Rey Campero Palenque in Candelaria Yegole in February, 2020. This batch alone would have made the nearly 4 hour dirt road journey worth the trek. This was distilled by Romulo's father, 'Tio Ramiro' - who taught Romulo how to make mezcal. This superlative batch was destined for family gatherings and celebrations, just resting in a giant food grade tote off to the side of the t...

The Ramos Family doesn't usually have much Arroqueno, but you can see a few massive plants as you walk you walk through their fields. The massive sword like leaves tower above all but the tallest Karwkinskii and their ashy color distinguishes them from other A. Americana in the field. The 2019 harvest only yielded about 100 liters and the family consumed or sold about half of it in the 4 months between when it was distilled and when we arrived. One taste and you'll know exactly why. This excellent example of the already well-liked varietal offers an incr...

In the early spring of 2019, the K&L buying team travelled to Oaxaca to search for incredible small batch examples from Mexico's very best producers. We visited the Ramos family rancho expecting great things. What we found were three exquisite micro batches offering unprecedented flavor and rarity. The creators of Mal Bien Mezcal are building incredible partnerships with their producers. They've become like family and after sitting with Emmanuel for lunch we ventured into the locked shed behind the house where the family stores their mezcal. This insane ...

96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "Elegant nose emits traces of mushrooms, dried herbs and lead pencil with deeper scents of mustard seed, vanilla bean and toffee. Palate is sublimely rich with succulent, brandy/Cognac-like flavors of oak resin, almond butter and tobacco leaf. Finishes Sherry-like and smooth. One of the best Tequilas available. (PP)" (06/2006)

This is about as artisanal as tequila gets. From the Tequila Trés Mujéres distillery in Amatitán, the Dos Artes line is a small-batch, expertly crafted run of tequilas packaged in some of the most beautiful, hand-painted ceramic bottles. Each bottle alone takes several hours to produce.

Created by certified Maestro Tequilero Guillermo Barroso Arnaud, El Pintor is an expression of Arnaud's quest to find balance between the art and science of tequila creation. Utilizing highland agave cooked in autoclaves for 10 hours, the clean steamed agave is then fermented with ancestral yeasts from the hacienda that's been cultivated for decades. The tequila is then slowly distilled on very small copper pot stills. The spirit rests in used bourbon barrels for between 3-4 years before a proprietary filtration processes is used to remove the subtle amb...

El Mero Mero Mezcal is the first liquor made from agave that was born with a tasting note issued by a professional sommelier, Eduardo Lópeztecillos: “Clean and brilliant. Pearls that confirm its alcoholic degree. In nose: cooked Maguey smoked with herbal notes. Strong resin shades, dampness and clay. Open attack in mouth, congruent with its aromas with a very long ending. Rubbing it in hand it dispels in resin and agave. It combines with moles, adobos, spicy seafood, pibil or havanero.” Tobalá is a very small wild type of maguey found in the mountains s...

El Mero Mero is distilled and bottled in San Dionisio Ocotepec by Justino Garcia Cruz. Roasted in traditional pits and pressed with tahona, the Tepeztate is one of the finest around. The fermentation is completed naturally in open wooden vats and all the solids are included in fermentation and the first distillation in small copper pots. The second distillation is completed to proof so no water is added before bottling. The label was created in Oaxaca by the TAGA (a Work Shop of Graphic Artists in the Jataltco neighborhood of Oaxaca City) and is inspired...

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A rare extra-aged Tequila that smells more like the agave than the barrel, mixing agave and faint jalapeño aromas. The palate is light, a refreshing mix of agave, fresh jalapeño and bell peppers, while the drying finish shows warming clove, cocoa and chocolate-covered cherry. It's one adventurous elixir.

Erick Rodriguez is widely known as one of Mexico's most knowledgable and adventerous bottlers of Mezcal. His tiny shop, Almamezcalera, has become famous among the agave cognicenti and his selections are legendary. We're very lucky to have access to this tiny unusual batch of uncertified mezcal (bottled as aguardiente de agave). Maestro Patricio Hernandez cooks the piñas in a stone oven, then mills the cooked agave using a traditional tahona; to ferment, however, around 30% fresh pulque is added to the crushed agave in a pine vat (a 'tina'), almost like a...

Mezcalero Tio Conejo (Uncle Rabbit) or Candido Reyes makes some of Bruxo's best stuff. His wild harvest Tobala is one of the family's most limited production offerings. The small rare wild agave tend to grow in cooler shaded areas, typically under oak trees. Few other agave feature the incredible finesse and elegance that a solid Tobala exudes, and Tio Conejo is making one of the very best. Exceptional even by Bruxo's wildly high standards.

The powerfully flavored Mexicano Verde (A. Rhodacantha) is named because of the vibrant green coloring of its broad pencas. But the name also perfectly embodies the flavors we get when this rare varietal is distilled: earthy, mineral, vegetal, funky. This batch was roasted in the underground ovens at the Cortes distillery for 8-10 days over encino, yegareche, mesquite and palo de aguila wood. Rested for another 5-7 days after cooking before 8 days of natural fermentation in sabino wood. Distilled on two small pot stills withe the refrescadera and adjuste...

Utilizing casks from Sazerac rye, the more herbaceous whiskey that sets the standard for the industry, this anejo expression was aged for two years and shows the most inflection of the three available anejos. The most traditional method for production in the Miahuatlan area (and all over Oaxaca) is simply to take the agave that's most mature out of the fields and roast them together for an ensamble or "mezcla". This practice of course diminishes the indivdual characteristics of the various plants, but also creates new and unique flavors from the combinations in roasting and fermentation that would never exist when individual plants are processed alone. Victor and his son Emmanuel are 3rd and 4th generations distillers and make use tof the abundance of agave k...

It all began at John Rexer's Bohemian artist refuge, Café No Se, in Antigua, Guatemala. Opened in 2003, Café No Se became the heart of a thriving expat and artisan community of Antigua. As John's business grew, his interest in Mezcal led him to "import" the mystical spirit in very "creative" ways. His customers took to the spirit and to satisfy the growing demand, he was forced to access less seemly trade routes, hence the name "Illegal." Needless to say John has gone legit, but his nose for quality has not changed. I often don't care for oak-aged mezc...

The “mother” of Agave karwinskii, the large and resinous Madrecuishe grows tall and proud in Miahuatlán. A long, cylindrical trunk (which harvested resembles a huge cigar) is topped with a tall, green bloom of leaves, spreading out from the trunk’s heart. From this trunk or stem, the Madrecuishe carries a lot of fiber alongside its highly concentrated sugars. A balance of fruity and vegetal notes is a hallmark of the distillate, implying everything from leafy green herbs to sweet carrots to raspberry seeds. An ideal example of this beloved varietal.
