Guillermo Erickson Sauza is a fifth generation tequila maker who hand-crafts beautiful, artisanal tequila at his century-old estate. His tartabuelo (great-great-grandfather), Don Cenobio was the first person to export tequila to the US, way back in the 1860s, starting his own brand in the 1870s. That tequila (Sauza) was passed down the generations before being sold by Guillermo's grandfather in 1976. Tequila Fortaleza is a return to his roots and to the traditional methods, including the use of a stone mill called a Tahona to crush the agave, a small, c...

This wonderful Mexicano (Agave Rhodancantha) was distilled by a high quality palenque in Santiago Matatlan. El Samaritano is the personal brand of the distillers, the Blas Family. The family has been making mezcal for three generations and still makes uses traditional artesenal techniques. The patriarche, Ambrosio Martinez Blas, has been working in the palenque since he was a young boy and plans to leave the distillery to his son. They'd never used Mexicano before and this special batch yielded less than 700 bottles. It's won double gold at the San Franc...

This tequila is aged two to three years in oak barrels and has a beautiful silky smooth character that does añejo right: rich, but not cloyingly sweet. Guillermo Erickson Sauza, a fifth-generation member of the iconic family, produces Tequila Fortaleza, using traditional techniques. This is a beautiful, artisan, hand-crafted, stone milled tequila. Tequila Fortaleza is produced entirely within the walls of their estate, using centuries old traditional methods that create a tequila which is unequaled in taste and smoothness. Using an old oven with meter-th...

The idea for Agua Del Sol came from the paradox that the rural spirit of Mexico has now become so prized and valued by spirits lovers around the world that it's now unaffordable for communities were the products are made to actually consume the spirit. Thus the brand Agua Del Sol was created committed to giving these communities affordable access to these sacred spirits, which have long been a part of their cultural identity. Each batch sold international goes to fund the sale to local inhabitants at extremely affordable prices of the same ultra high qua...

This unusual experimental expression of the traditional Oaxacan Pechuga comes from Mezcalero Fernando Santibanz. Marrying two traditions into a unique example of this celebratory spirit, the Xicaru Pechuga Mole is excatly that. First traditional Mole is hand ground using peppers, spices and of course chocolate. The finished mole is added to the copper potstills with the ordinario (first run of distillation) and seven whole chickens. Unlike most pechuga, the meat is not suspended in the still and while the chickens give an unquestionable meatiness, it is ...

The magnificent Casa Dragones has been blowing it up in the high-end tequila market. They've finally made their exquisite lowland tequila available to the masses. This surprisingly approachable blanco has all the finesse and structure of the Joven, but without the sweet vanilla and spice oak. This shows tons of apple and pear, with slight whiffs of the minerally vegetable that we expect from a lowland. On the palate it's clean and bright with lovely sweet fruit and only a slight cracked pepper quality. Ultimately, a fine follow up to a very difficult to ...

Mezcal fans rejoice. Breaking Bad fans rejoice. Dos Hombres Mezcal has arrived. After Breaking Bad wrapped, Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston were pretty bummed out they wouldn't be working together anymore, so they did what any spirit loving person would do and decided to start a Mezcal brand. However, they also learned lessons from some other celeb brands and realized they didn't want to just slap their name on something they liked, but source a quality product from real artisans. Turns out that Bryan and Aaron have quite different tastes when it comes to ...

Special order only. Please allow 5-7 days for delivery based on availability from distribution. The Ilegal story is a wild one. John Rexer opened a bar in Antigua, Guatemala in 2003. It was a huge hit and ther staple liquor was mezcal. Sourcing this spirit from Mexico and gettnig into the Guatemalan highlands proved tricky and required some unsavory trade routes - hence Ilegal Mezcal was born. John's since gone legit, but kept the name. A bit of an unusal beast in mezcal, this bottliing sees time in oak barrels providing a mellowing of the robust spirit ...

Chichicapa has a relatively light nose, yet is deep and sweet on the tongue with a very complex character. It has a long finish, with a distinct smokiness and hint of mint at the end. Chichicapa is 2 hours south of Oaxaca, and 2 hours to the west on a dirt road. The pueblo elevation is about 7,000 feet. Chichicapa is separated from the valley of Oaxaca by a mountain range. The valley is broad, about thirty miles deep and ten miles wide. The climate is desert and tropical, with banana trees, guava, mangoes, and other exotic fruits. Faustino Garcia Vasquez...

Made from Cupreata agave sourced outside of Oaxaca in the Mexican states of Mazatlan and Guerrero, the newest release from Amaras is absolutely stunning. Potent roasted flavors intermingle with spicy notes of pepper before settling into a pure and clean finish with subtle smoke and clove. A stunning mezcal that truly shows there's a long future for the spirit outside of the traditional Oaxacan zone.

Casa Tequileña is owned and operated by Enrique Fonesca, known as El Arquitecto, a fifth-generation grower and master distiller who holds one of the largest plots of agave in the industry. This añejo is made to showcase the oak without overshadowing the agave. The nose is amazing! Again, subdued and needing to be coaxed, but incredible when it finally arrives. Nutty aromas with toasted vanilla, but neither rich nor oaky. Warm baking spices on the palate, which is incredibly lean for an añejo! This is a blend of two- and three-year-old tequilas aged exclu...

The "old way" of making mezcal is a loaded term, but in this case Los Nahuales is referring to a method of dilution using the tails of the first run (codas) with the heart of the second distillation. This practice was originally banned by the NORMA regulations governing the production and export of mezcal, but Nahuales has had the prohibition over turned. That means that all certified mezcal that's been diluted has used water to achieve a lower proof, instead of this old method. The tails from the first run are full of life and complexity. They add textu...

Barril is a type of wild agave that grows in the hills of San Agustin Amatengo, Oaxaca, where the Bruxo No. 3 mezcal is made. Mezcalero Tio Conejo (Uncle Rabbit) uses donkeys to transport the agave back to his distillery where they are fermented and distilled in the village. The flavors are incredibly savory and mineral at the same time. There are flinty notes that mesh with peppery herbs and dried leaves on a rather creamy and supple palate. Absolutely incredible stuff.

A blanco with a little extra bite, created with the bartender in mind. The distiller's notes: "While shaping the flavor profile for Siembra Valles Blanco, the team at Cascahuin kept coming back to taste the spirit at still-proof. The Rosales family has developed a slow distillation process that yields a Tequila at 92 proof. Lastly, Valles High Proof is rested for 11 months in glass demijohns for a truly unique experience." One of the most vibrant and affordable new mezcales to hit our shelf in years, the Tosba Espadin has the tangy character of the agave on the palate and a healthy dollop of smoke to balance it all out. Tosba is imported by Elisandro Gonzalez-Molina and his cousin Edgar Gonzalez-Ramirez; both who are from the small village of San Cristóbal Lachirioag in Oaxaca. It was their hope to bring the wonderful spirits of their pueblo to the U.S. market and we're very happy they've done so.

A great anejo for those who love to still taste the tequila underneath.

The Cascahuin Distillery is one of the most traditional and high-quality operations in the lowlands of Tequila. The name translates to "mountain of light," a reference to the mountain outside the town where it's located, El Arenal, which seems to attract lighting in every storm. Built in 1904 by the Rosales Family, not a lot has changed since then. They did replace their traditional tahona press with a roller mill in the 1980s, but recently reintroduced a tahona to the process to create a truly traditional tequila. This is the first release made with thi...

The wonderful El Silencio Mezcal comes from the village of San Baltazar. This special blend of three agave types, espadin, tobaisiche, & mexicano, double distilled in copper pots - this is "mezcal for the masses". The 2019 harvest only yielded about 100 liters and the family consumed or sold about half of it in the 4 months between when it was distilled and when we arrived. One taste and you'll know exactly why. This excellent example of the already well-liked varietal offers an incr...
