Top Pick!
The Guerrero region has only been minimally explored by the mezcal loving public. For those in the know, no name in the region resonates more than Tomas Gutierrez of Sanzekan fame. If you're an agave nerd then you know exactly what we're talking about. If not, Sanzekan is a small cooperative of mezcal producers in and around the communities of Chilapa de Alvarez. They're renowned for some of the highest quality production anywhere in Mexico, but the brand is not sold outside of Mexico. Now for the first time ever, Mal Bien has managed to secure stocks fr...

This K&L exclusive is made of rare agaves that were roasted, mashed, fermented, and distilled together. Sierra Negra is an Agave Americana, akin to Arroqueño, but with a shorter lifespan (12-15 years) and thinner leaves which have a distinct black spine running up and down their edges. It grows wildly, but is also cultivated by a select few intrepid souls. Alberto Martinez, producer of this incredible mezcal is one of the few distillers left in Santa Catarina Alborradas. The altitude is about 6,500 feet above sea level at the distillery and Alberto's fie...

The oldest expression from Carlos Camarena's Tapatio brand is finally available stateside. Rich and butterscotchy and with hints of black pepper and citrus, it is distilled exclusively from perfectly matured agave at the famous La Altena distillery in Arandas. When they tell you how this stuff was made, it just boggles the mind. Distilled in 2000, this is the official SECOND batch of Excelencia. It was filled into the same barrels as the first directly after they were dumped and aged for four years before being transferred into glass containers. There it...

Marcelo Luna and his son Leonardo make the savory Pechuga de Mole Poblano by adding cooked chicken and a mole sauce made of chocolate, apples, bananas, chile mulato, chile ancho, cinnamon, cumin, peanuts, almonds, sesame seeds to the first distillate prior to the second run. The result is a sweet, savory and spicy mezcal unique among pechugas. Produced in Zoyalta, Puebla from Espadilla. Fermented in stone with pure spring water. The first distillation is in a Hybrid Filipino still. Second with cooked chicken and mole poblano. K&L Notes: This pechuga is ...

Enrique Fonseca distilled this expression in early Spring 2010, with three-quarters of the bottling made in a double-copper column still with removed plates to achieve a lower distillation proof and the remaining quarter made in an alembic pot still. Half of the run was then stored in American white oak previously used to age California red wine, and the remaining half barreled in used dark French oak. The casks were then stored for seven years at 3,800 feet elevation in a cool-climate subterranean barrel room.

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Although billed as a joven, this Tequila is blended with a touch of añejo. The end result is extraordinarily smooth, with a very sweet, fruity, almost wine-like nose but a bold, pure peppery flavor that finishes cleanly. The packaging is gift-worthy, presenting the bottle in a gold-and-robin’s egg blue box, like a precious jewel. (KN)" (05/2013) K&L Notes: Casa Dragones is 100% Blue Agave Joven Tequila. Hand-made in small batches using a multiple distillation process for a clean, extra soft taste. The Maestro Tequilero hand-...

Eduardo Cortez Perez is the son of Tio Tello and this batch of Coyote was distilled in 2020 at their family's palenque in El Nanche, Miahuatlan. The unusual Coyote agave is thought to be a hybrid of Agave Karwinskii (cuishe, madrecuishe, etc.) and Agave Potatorum (Tobala). This rarity is not to be confused with the larger Agave Americana called Coyote in other parts of Oaxaca. An extremely limited batch and Lalo's first export batch, he's used traditional underground ovens and the agave is milled by hand using machete and wooden hammers. It's fermented i...

Lalocura's clay pot distilled mezcales have built a steady cult following of chefs, writers, and mezcal-heads, who turn up at the palenque each day hoping to spend a few hours listening to maestro mezcalero Eduardo "Lalo" Ángeles tell stories. Before starting Lalocura in 2014, Ángeles spent years working as the fourth generation master distiller of his family’s brand, where he worked under his father, the late, great Don Lorenzo.

Known as Tio Tello, Eleuterio Perez Ramos has been distilling mezcal for more than 5 decades. He continues to use many of the most labor intensive and time consuming traditional practices for his excellent mezcal. Situated outside the small town of El Nanche in the rolling fertile plains of Miahuatlan, Tio Tello is meticulous about agave selection. Typically many of the Pencas are included during roasting and fermentation. These madrecuishe were harvest in 2014 and is exclusively sold in California. The ultra-rare stocks that go into the exquisite Tears of Llorona come from Master Tequilero German Gonzalez's personal storage. Distilled from hand-selected piñas at La Tequilana, Tears is aged for at least 4.5 years and is supposedly "double barreled." Gonzalez uses his own proprietary yeast strain to ferment the agave, and it is distilled in copper pots, unlike some of Tequilanas' other tequilas, which go through column stills. Each cask is hand selected and blended in ultra-small batches. While I tend to lean away from older tequila (because I don't ...

Tobalá is a special variety of wild mountain maguey (agave) that is smaller in size with larger leaves than the more widely cultivated espadin (sword) or azul (blue) agave varieties. Rey Campero "Jabalí" Mezcal (750ml)
New!
Originating from the town of Zoquitlan, this is one of the rarer Silvestre agaves and the first we've stocked in the store. The flavor of the Agave recalls Tobala with tons of tropical fruit and citrus. That said there's much more earthy gravel and pepper. Richly textured and ultra dense, the smoke is the perfect frame to the wild flavors of this special plant. Mineral and spice build on the finish leaving you with a long lingering finish.

This producer and his sons make a very special mezcal called Pechuga that is many a bartender's darling due to its distinctively smoky-spicy aromas and flavors. Spirits critics have described it as "ouzo-like" for its intense petrol and anise-driven profile. It is triple-distilled and limited in production due to the special seasonal ingredients it requires—wild mountain apples and plums—which are part of a special combination of fruits and rice added to the distillate for the third distillation, which takes place over the period of 24 hours and requires...

At first blush this looks like any other Cristalino that comes in a fancy bottle. It begins like many (but not all) with ripe agave. A combination of highland and lowland agave gives the best of both worlds. The agaves are roasted in traditional stone ovens, an important step that many producers forego in favor of the more efficient autoclaves that increase yield and reduce production time. The next step is really where we fork from Tequila traditions though - nearly all tequila gets aged in whiskey barrels. This is a perfectly good vessel, but results i...
