This K&L exclusive is made of rare agaves that were roasted, mashed, fermented, and distilled together. Sierra Negra is an Agave Americana, akin to Arroqueño, but with a shorter lifespan (12-15 years) and thinner leaves which have a distinct black spine running up and down their edges. It grows wildly, but is also cultivated by a select few intrepid souls. Alberto Martinez, producer of this incredible mezcal is one of the few distillers left in Santa Catarina Alborradas. The altitude is about 6,500 feet above sea level at the distillery and Alberto's fie...

The oldest expression from Carlos Camarena's Tapatio brand is finally available stateside. Rich and butterscotchy and with hints of black pepper and citrus, it is distilled exclusively from perfectly matured agave at the famous La Altena distillery in Arandas. When they tell you how this stuff was made, it just boggles the mind. Distilled in 2000, this is the official SECOND batch of Excelencia. It was filled into the same barrels as the first directly after they were dumped and aged for four years before being transferred into glass containers. There it...

2014 Mal Bien Black Tape "Tomás + Emiliano Gutierrez" K&L Exclusive Batch 0414TG Papalote (Cupreata) Madurado En Vidrio Tepehuixco, Chilapa de Alvarez Guerrero Agave Spirits (Uncertified Mezcal) (750ml)
Top Pick!
The Guerrero region has only been minimally explored by the mezcal loving public. For those in the know, no name in the region resonates more than Tomas Gutierrez of Sanzekan fame. If you're an agave nerd then you know exactly what we're talking about. If not, Sanzekan is a small cooperative of mezcal producers in and around the communities of Chilapa de Alvarez. They're renowned for some of the highest quality production anywhere in Mexico, but the brand is not sold outside of Mexico. Now for the first time ever, Mal Bien has managed to secure stocks fr...

96 points Wine Enthusiast: "Although billed as a joven, this Tequila is blended with a touch of añejo. The end result is extraordinarily smooth, with a very sweet, fruity, almost wine-like nose but a bold, pure peppery flavor that finishes cleanly. The packaging is gift-worthy, presenting the bottle in a gold-and-robin’s egg blue box, like a precious jewel. (KN)" (05/2013) K&L Notes: Casa Dragones is 100% Blue Agave Joven Tequila. Hand-made in small batches using a multiple distillation process for a clean, extra soft taste. The Maestro Tequilero hand-...

Enrique Fonseca distilled this expression in early Spring 2010, with three-quarters of the bottling made in a double-copper column still with removed plates to achieve a lower distillation proof and the remaining quarter made in an alembic pot still. Half of the run was then stored in American white oak previously used to age California red wine, and the remaining half barreled in used dark French oak. The casks were then stored for seven years at 3,800 feet elevation in a cool-climate subterranean barrel room.

According to Mezcal reviews: "Rezpiral brings selections of high-quality traditional small-batch (non-certified) Mezcals into a handful of places in the USA. At the core of the project is the embrace of an ethos that aims to respect and support the multi-generational knowledge, independence, flavors, lands, and ways of each mezcalero family. Rezpiral’s small scale allows for the advocacy of diversity on different levels, from supporting the autonomy of producers & their continued production of artisanal mezcals to the preservation of local land control....

Siembra Valles Ancestral is a project conceived of a love of history and a desire to know tequila from its roots, celebrating its true identity and a curiosity of what the past once tasted like. With agave untouched by machine, the Ancestral boasts the complexity of nature's flavors and the skills of tequilero ancestry. It begins its journey through time in the pristine blue agave fields nurtured by the Rosales family’s team of expert cultivators, jimadores, and a lowland terroir. The fruitful plants can credit their rich flavors to a pesticide-free land...

Lalocura's clay pot distilled mezcales have built a steady cult following of chefs, writers, and mezcal-heads, who turn up at the palenque each day hoping to spend a few hours listening to maestro mezcalero Eduardo "Lalo" Ángeles tell stories. Before starting Lalocura in 2014, Ángeles spent years working as the fourth generation master distiller of his family’s brand, where he worked under his father, the late, great Don Lorenzo.

Kara Newman of Wine Enthusiast writes: "Need a new spirit to pair with chicken? Pechuga mezcal, a traditional spirit of Mexico’s Oaxaca region, could be worth your attention. After all, it’s made with meat. Pechuga (“breast” in Spanish) is a style of mezcal that involves hanging a piece of raw chicken breast inside the still during distillation. The heat and steam from the process cook the chicken as the spirit distills, killing any harmful bacteria present (no need to worry about salmonella here), allowing the meat’s fat and juices to drip into the mez...

Tears of Llorona Extra Añejo Tequila (1L) (Local Delivery Only - cannot ship)
Top Pick!
The ultra-rare stocks that go into the exquisite Tears of Llorona come from Master Tequilero German Gonzalez's personal storage. Distilled from hand-selected piñas at La Tequilana, Tears is aged for at least 4.5 years and is supposedly "double barreled." Gonzalez uses his own proprietary yeast strain to ferment the agave, and it is distilled in copper pots, unlike some of Tequilanas' other tequilas, which go through column stills. Each cask is hand selected and blended in ultra-small batches. While I tend to lean away from older tequila (because I don't ...

97 points and 2019 Best Extra Añejo Tequila from the Beverage Tasting Institute: "Gold color. Attractive aromas of cedar, caramel, crushed pineapple, eucalyptus-vanilla, and fine tea with a round, vibrant, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a smooth, complex, very long allspice, lime leaf, dried mango, smoke, and sea salt finish. Exotic aromas and superb integration make this the Cognac or Single Malt-lovers Tequila; a must-try." 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "A rare extra-aged Tequila that smells more like the agave than the barrel, mixing agave and faint jalapeño aromas. The palate is light, a refreshing mix of agave, fresh jalapeño and bell peppers, while the drying finish shows warming clove, cocoa and chocolate-covered cherry. (KN)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: 100% blue agave aged for 36 months in American white oak barrels. Each bottle of this limited production tequila is decorated by hand.

*95 points, Ultimate Spirits Challenge Top 100 of 2020* Geoff Kleinman of DrinkSpirits.com writes: "Always with an eye towards being “best of class”, Avion has now introduced an ultra-premium extra anejo tequila called Avion Reserva 44. The 44 in Avion’s Reserva 44 refers to the number of months that Avion has aged this tequila (which translates to 3.6 years). Avion Reserva 44 goes through the same proprietary ultra-slow filtration method that helps give Tequila Avion its distinct, spicy, and clean character before it’s aged for 43 of those 44 months. T...

Eduardo Cortez Perez is the son of Tio Tello and this batch of Coyote was distilled in 2020 at their family's palenque in El Nanche, Miahuatlan. The unusual Coyote agave is thought to be a hybrid of Agave Karwinskii (cuishe, madrecuishe, etc.) and Agave Potatorum (Tobala). This rarity is not to be confused with the larger Agave Americana called Coyote in other parts of Oaxaca. An extremely limited batch and Lalo's first export batch, he's used traditional underground ovens and the agave is milled by hand using machete and wooden hammers. It's fermented i...

Wine Enthusiast: "This single-village mezcal made from wild mountain maguey (agave) has a clean, peppery flavor and high, sweet fragrance with a peppery zing. (KN)" (12/2010) K&L Notes: Del Maguey was named "Distiller of the Year" at the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Tobalá is a special variety of wild mountain maguey (agave) that is smaller in size with larger leaves than the more widely cultivated espadin (sword) or azul (blue) agave varieties. At first blush this looks like any other Cristalino that comes in a fancy bottle. It begins like many (but not all) with ripe agave. A combination of highland and lowland agave gives the best of both worlds. The agaves are roasted in traditional stone ovens, an important step that many producers forego in favor of the more efficient autoclaves that increase yield and reduce production time. The next step is really where we fork from Tequila traditions though - nearly all tequila gets aged in whiskey barrels. This is a perfectly good vessel, but results i...

This producer and his sons make a very special mezcal called Pechuga that is many a bartender's darling due to its distinctively smoky-spicy aromas and flavors. Spirits critics have described it as "ouzo-like" for its intense petrol and anise-driven profile. It is triple-distilled and limited in production due to the special seasonal ingredients it requires—wild mountain apples and plums—which are part of a special combination of fruits and rice added to the distillate for the third distillation, which takes place over the period of 24 hours and requires...

A stunning acheivement from Felipe Camarena at NOM 1579. 48 months in American oak is perfectly balanced with the intensity of sweet agave flavors and tons of natural pepper spice from the plant. Shockingly light in color for such a well aged tequila, this is all about the quality of the agave itself and the careful distillation. The elegant wood profile highlights all the work put in before those 4 years in barrel perfectly.
