Our seventh vintage of this direct import Albariño, this wine shows everything we like in the grape: hints of lemongrass, lively stone fruit, and a brisk, saline-tinged palate. Located in the sub-zone of Condado do Tea, where the days are a bit warmer and evenings are slightly cooler, there is a wonderful mid-palate presence to complement the typically lean and mineral qualities of Albariño. A classic with any shellfish, especially Dungeness crab!

Based in the Southern Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is bodega producing expressive, regionally specific wines at very reasonable prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and snow-covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. Martínez Alesanco's Blanco is made from equal parts Viura, White Tempranillo, Malvasi...

91 points James Suckling: "Pretty nose of lemon blossom, white lavender, apricot and melon. Some anise, too. It’s medium-bodied with fresh acidity. Clean and bright expression. Vegan. Drink now." (02/2021) K&L Notes: Vinos del Viento is our most recent addition to our Direct import portfolio from Spain. It is a project that focuses on Garnacha and Cariñena (Grenache and Carignan) from the region that is the origin for both varieties, Aragon. All of the DO’s of Aragon are represented in the portfolio; Campo de Borja, Calatayud, Carinena and Somontano....

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Viña Gravonia Blanco comes from a rainy, cool and challenging vintage when the grapes didn't reach the perfect ripeness the 2012 (that I tasted next to it) displayed. It has citrus notes (orange peel, yuzu) and an herbal twist, balsamic with the unmistakably white López de Heredia aroma of mushrooms that you smell as soon as you enter their ancient cellars. It's quite pale, and the palate is sharp and austere, quite light but with the pungent flavors and a long and tasty finish. This is a relatively simp...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I also got a last-minute bottle of the Saca Mayo 2019 of the NV Fino Tradición, which had just been bottled, and it really felt like I was drinking it straight from the bota. In fact, the palate had some tenderness that I didn't notice in the other bottlings, and the word that came to my head when drinking it was spherical, a round wine with no edges, especially after it had been in the glass for a couple of hours. The way to compare these bottlings is to pour a glass of each and follow its evolution for a couple...

Native South African Bryan MacRobert grew up in a farming family and has been quietly making some of that country's best value wines. He fell in love with a girl from Rioja as well as the region's wines (we forget in which order) but quickly became fascinated with the inimitable terroirs and endless potential for wines in the region. A proponent not only of organic viticulture, but also a strong believer in the importance of legacy organically cultivated vines on top quality sites, Bryan is picky about where he grows and sources vines. The winemaking is ...

Finca Garabato is a parcel of Valtea's oldest wines. You will notice that it says "2o Año" on the label, which refers to the fact that it ages in tank on its lees for a year following fermentation. This gives the wine a lovely richness, which really ramps up the flavor and textural qualities of the wine. Still refreshing, only richer than the regular Valtea bottling and ready to take on a meal.

92 points Decanter: "Made in the classic style, this blend of the two main Txakoli grapes – 85% Hondarrabi Zuri, 15% Hondarrabi Beltza – is fresh and lean with a spiky acidity punctuated by green apples, lime and a fizz of sherbet lemons. There’s a delightful tingle of petillance which sets it off nicely and introduces a slight mineral note on the finish. It cries out for oysters. (CW)" (06/2021) 92 points Vinous: "Limpid, green-hued straw. Taut and sharply focused on the nose, displaying vibrant citrus zest, quince and floral scents and a chalky miner...

The birthplace for Garnacha Blanca is Terra Alta. It’s two closest neighbouring wine regions are Montsant and Priorat. The secret to Terra Alta success with white varietals while its neighbors are so famous for their reds, limestone. 95% of the soils here are limestone, the secret sauce to some of the worlds great white wines. Vinos Piñol is a family run estate that makes only a small amount of wines from their certified organic vineyards. The Portal Blanco is 85% old vine Garnacha Blanca with the remainder being Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, that wa...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The eponymous 2016 Tricó is a classic Albariño from 25- to 35-year-old vineyards on poor granite soils that give low yields. The full clusters are pressed, then the juice is let to settle before fermenting at low temperature with neutral yeasts. This stays at least one year in tank before it's bottled. These are serious and subtle wines, not exuberant or showy, with good ripeness and very high compensating acidity, but the wines don't feel acidic. This has the advantage of time and has developed further complexit...

92 points Vinous: "Light, vivid yellow. Fresh, mineral-tinged pear, nectarine, melon and floral scents are complemented by hints of honey, lemon curd and chamomile. Silky and expansive on the palate, offering energetic orchard and citrus fruit flavors that tighten up and turn spicier through the back half. Finishes very long and nervy, with repeating florality and a spicy jolt of candied ginger. (JR)" (06/2021)

92 points Vinous: "Light yellow. Lively and sharply focused on the nose, displaying fresh citrus and orchard fruit scents and subtle vanilla and floral overtones. Shows sharp definition and spicy lift to the Meyer lemon, pear and honeysuckle flavors, which deepen through the midpalate. Closes long and juicy, with repeating florality and a dusty mineral flourish. (JR)" (04/2021)

An excellent value in Spanish white wine, the Verdeal Rueda shows just how versatile and appealing the Verdejo grape can be. Bright, fresh, elegant, and well structured. Delicious notes of green apples, peaches, and apricots predominate with intense aromas of herbs and white flowers. It has a long finish with aftertaste of stone fruits, aromatic herbs and faint spice.

Emilio Hidalgo "La Panesa" Especial Fino Jerez
Back In Stock!
96 points Wine & Spirits: "“Fino Amontillado” is a style of Sherry that’s virtually extinct. It was made from old wines that had almost lost their flor and had begun to oxidize, their color darkening as they gained depth and complexity. Although La Panesa is not, strictly speaking, a Fino Amontillado, it has the characteristics of those wines from the past. With an average of 15 years of aging in solera (ten more than most Finos), it takes the lifespan of flor to the limit, creating a wine that’s intoxicating in its mineral and dried-fruit fragrance. Bon...

Albarino is the perfect summer white, but its naturally crisp acidity and peachy citrus flavors make it enjoyable year-round as an aperitif or paired with a variety of foods, particularly shellfish and seafood. It hails from the Rias Baixas zone of Galicia, on the northwest coast of Spain. Walk through any given fishing village along the "rias" (fjords) in this beautiful, cool, maritime-influenced region and you will find fresh grilled pulpo (octopus) vendors at every corner! A classic Albarino nose of white peach, citrus and mineral aromas gives way to ...

From the remote Galician countryside of Spain comes this Mencía-based wine. It is a recent effort from one of Spain's best winemakers, the owner of Remelluri, and someone who is truly gifted at ferreting out some of the country's most interesting vineyards, Telmo Rodriguez. He is someone who has long championed the terraced, granite and slate characterized terroir of Valdeorras, and his passion for the region really shows through in this incredible bottling

Rey Fernando de Castilla Oloroso Jerez
New!
90 points Wine Spectator: "Round, rich style. Sports bitter chocolate, toffee, honey and ocean brine flavors, picking up a burnt edge. Balanced, ending with a dry, pungent finish. (BS)" (11/2006) Jancis Robinson: "Pale walnut brown. Caramel and reduced bitter orange on the nose. That glorious bitter orange on the palate too, with amazing freshness and precise shape. Intense bitter-orange flavour but without bitterness, then the salty finish increasing the freshness. (JH) 17.5/20 points" (03/2017) K&L Notes: Lots of attention has recently been placed ...

Do Ferreiro is a benchmark Albariño. Every year, it delivers the goods, showing a degree of aromatic complexity, nervy minerality, and pure intensity of flavor that always makes it stand out from the rest. Delicious upon release, it is also one of the few Albariños to improve in bottle for up to a decade (maybe longer?) beyond the vintage year. There is bright fruit intermingling with the classic Do Ferreiro salty/smoky mineral bite. Enjoy this wine on its own or with all types of seafood.

92 points Wine & Spirits: "Don't be put off by the intensely resinous scent; this is a complex, classic manzanilla, with dark nut notes in the intense flor-driven flavor and a brisk sea-salt edge. Under the flor, hints of lemon zest, dried apple and almonds merge in a delicate balance. Ideal with nothing more than a handful of marcona almonds." (04/2005) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Very high-pitched, with bright chalk, chamomile, salt and lemon seed notes. The vigorous finish has serious cut. This is a very special Albariño, very small production (1120 bottles produced!). You might have noticed that it is labeled Galicia. This is a single vineyard, one hectare, located near the town of A Cañiza, which is not part of any Galicia DO. It is located between Rias Baixas and Ribeiro, and the wine tastes just like that. It has the precision, cut and minerality of the former and carries the weight, aromatics and forwardness of the later. The grapes are farmed organically with some biodynamics, indigenous yeast fermentation and bottles with low sulfur...

Jancis Robinson: "Benchmark classic smoky-salty nose. Hay. Subtle, beautifully fresh, moderately sustained. Mouth-wateringly dry. Reliable and *Good Value* (JH)" (04/2016) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Talking about which, the NV Tio Pepe Fino is an icon of Sherry wine. Produced from Palomino grapes aged in the Tio Pepe solera for an average of four years under flor. It has a light nose of dried flowers, almonds and olives, in a subtle way and a dry palate dominated by the chalky notes. Light and easy to drink, it is a good introduction to Fino Sherr...

91 points Wine Spectator: "This has enticing range, with hints of nectarine and white peach out front, followed quickly by a saltier profile of chalk, quinine, Brazil nut and citrus oil. The long, vigorous finish has lovely spine, leaving a fleur de sel note echoing. (JM)" (08/2014) K&L Notes: Lots of attention has recently been placed on the historic region and stunning wines of Jerez. Despite all the newspaper articles, restaurant by-the-glass placements, even a serious new book on the topic, the spotlight has generally avoided Rey Fernando de Castil...

Muti Albariño was conceived as a tribute to Patrick Mata’s mother Christiane, with whom he spoke German at home – “Muti” means “Mom” in German. Made by Rodrigo Mendez and Patrick’s lifelong friend and co-founder of Olé, Alberto Orte, Muti is a classic expression of Salnes Albarino. Muti is sourced from three different sites. The first vineyard was planted in 1912, with granite soil, located in the town of Palina, just 30 meters (100 feet) from the Atlantic Ocean. The other vineyards were planted in 1972, located in the towns of Meaño and Dena. All in all...

100% estate grown old vine 60% Hondarrabi Beltza, 40% Hondarrabi Zuri which is sustainably farmed. Gaintza, meaning “on top of”, in Euskadi, refers to the aspect of the winery which overlooks the bay in Guipuzcoa. This delivers the classic Txakolina experience; light bodied, low alcohol, refreshing acidity, a salty tang, and just a slight spritz. While some other Rosado Txakolina are intensely colored this is more subtly colored as what most people would think of a Rose.

Juanjo Tellaetxe Tantaka grew up in a remote river valley in the Basque province of Araba. As a child Juanjo would walk with the shepherds as they followed their flocks through the valley. His family has lived for generations in Araba, the family cemetery is in the same river canyon as Juanjo’s vineyards. The steep mountains protect the valley from the harsh coastal winds blowing off of the Atlantic. The valley is humid and cool most of the year creating long hang times for the grapes. During the rainy season waterfalls cascade down sheer cliff sides and...

Made from Macabeo and Xarel-lo from vines up to 50 years old in the Penedes region, best known for Cava (Avinyo also makes good Cavas) this is a delicious, thirst quenching wine that hints at Muscat's floral and herbal, tarragon-like qualities, but also shows great cut, with delicious citrus and appley fruits, refreshing fizziness, and a dry finish that begs another (large) sip. Think Txakoli, but with a touch lower acidity and an appealing faintly herbal quality.

Barbadillo "Ataman" Manzanilla Sherry Vermouth (500ml)
New!
In a 200-year-old company with sixteen bodegas, sometimes suprising things get found. In this case, Barbadillo discovered old tonic wines of indeterminate age and recipe, and called on winemaker Montserrat Molina to develop a new vermouth recipe to approximate the flavor profiles of what they had found. The result, Atamán, is a potently delicious sipping vermouth built on Manzanilla sherry with quassia, bitter orange, wormwood, elderberry and rosemary dominating the botanical roster.

(08/2021) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Blanco has to be the finest white from Remelluri so far. An exceedingly rare oloroso, in that it is actually aged very briefly under flor prior to its 15-20 years of solera ageing oxidatively, the Villapanés is one of the great wines of Jerez. As with the other Emilio Hidalgo wines, there is an understated elegance which marks the wine and defines the style of the house.
