2018 Black Slate "Escaladei" Vi de la Vila Priorat
Top Pick!
92 points Vinous: "Deep, shimmering violet. Lively dark berry, potpourri and licorice aromas are complemented by smoky mineral and exotic spice flourishes. Juicy and lively on the palate, offering pliant black raspberry, bitter cherry and violet pastille flavors that deepen and become sweeter with air. Finishes very long and spicy, with solid mineral thrust and polished, slow-building tannins that sneak in late. (JR)" (03/2021) K&L Notes: The Vi de Vila project is mapping out of Priorat terroir in an Burgundian manner. Priorat is a dramatic appellatio...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The truly impressive 2018 Ultreia Saint Jacques transcends its price category. They destemmed more grapes because they fermented it in the oak vats they bought from Vega Sicilia to use in the new winery, where it macerated for two months and then matured in used barrels for nine to 10 months. The secret is to use very good grapes from very good vineyards. The wine is clean, precise and fresh, and the oak is super-subtle, almost unnoticeable. The palate reflects a fluid wine of pleasure, a red of thirst. This is t...

Here is a Priorat that is not at all shy or trying to hide its Mediterranean origins, a richer, fuller bodied style especially considering its modest price. That said, the wine has become increasingly fresher, a development that is particularly apparent in this juicy, well delineated 2016. It is a well-balanced, tasty blend of Garnacha, Carignane, and just a tiny amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.

A blend of Garnacha, Samso (Carignan), Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah it is fermented in tank and then aged in 500L used French oak barrels. This wine has always been considered the "entry level" offering for Clos Figueras, a brighter fresher interpretation of the region. This is an unadorned expression of Gratallops. This wine has everything you could want from Priorat; great aromatics mixed berries, wild meditereanan herbs, spice and that earthy mineral drive from the llicorella soils. The used oak speaks volumes for what it does to the wine and for w...

Tajinaste was one of the first (maybe the first?) of the many Canary Islands wines to be selected, represented and championed by importer José Pastor. From the island of Tenerife, known for its high elevation vineyards and other worldly landscapde, Tajinaste has once again crafted some of our favorite releases. In my mind, it is arguably the most consistent as well, producing wines that both excite the most critical palates while pleasing those who simply want something delicious to drink.Tajinaste's Tradicional is made entirely from Listan Negro, which ...

Descendientes de J. Palacios is a leading producer of red wines from the Mencia grape in the Bierzo region of northwest Spain. It was founded in 1998, and is a collaboration between Alvaro Palacios of Priorat fame, and his nephew Ricardo Perez Palacios. The venture is credited with bringing the region to much greater prominence. Petalos, the latest triumph from Alvaro Palacios, comes from 60 year-old vines and farmed biodynamically, is an intense wine that mingles beautifully wild plum, smoke, and spice flavors. *Biodynamic*

2018 Celler Can Blau "Can Blau" Montsant
Top Pick!
91 points Vinous: "Saturated ruby. Vibrant dark berry, potpourri and licorice scents are complemented by smoky mineral and spice accents. Gently chewy and lively in the mouth, offering pliant blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that deepen and become sweeter with air. Finishes long and spicy, with solid dark fruit thrust and subtle, slow-building tannins that come in late. (JR)" (03/2021)

Dani Sánchez (from Azul y Garanza in Navarra) founded DIT Celler - the first certified organic wines of Montsant - with Toni Coca and recently took over the project solo. The vineyards, Mas d'En Fornós and Guiamets, surround the mountains of the natural park Llaberia in Priorat, The local name for the soil type is "pinyolencs," which contain small stones (they resemble olive pits - the meaning of pinyolenc) and are rich in calcium, giving acidity and freshness to the wines. The weather can get quite warm in summer time, but every summer afternoon a wind ...

This is a field blend of old vine (planted 70-100 years ago) Mencía, Domingo Pérez (Trousseau), Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet), Mouratón, Caiño and Brancellao from a few different sites within the Chantada and Ribeira do Miño zones of the Ribeira Sacra appellation. It was fermented with whole clusters in foudre and aged in a combination of foudre and 500L used barrels. This is a Raul Perez project, a chance to work with sites that are a little highter and cooler than the ones that he works with in Bierzo. *organic*

Made from estate-grown Listán Negro grapes, aged 3 months in mostly used American oak barrels. (About one of 8 barrels is new.) The grapes are de-stemmed and cold-soaked for 24 hours before pressing. Vinification in stainless steel tanks, after which the wines are moved to used american oak barrels. Less than 4,000 cases produced.

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Based largely on Carignan, with 30% Garnacha and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Priorat has a big, smoky nose of mulled red and black fruits, graphite, flowers, and new leather. This carries to a medium to full-bodied wine with terrific tannins (especially for Carignan), a balanced, elegant texture, no hard edges, and a great finish." (03/2021) K&L Notes: This is the newest Priorat offering from Eric Solomon. Eric who has long and deep connections to the region, he has been importing wine from the region since the early '90's...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I tasted three vintages of the pink clarete, starting with the 2017 Pícaro del Águila Clarete. It was produced with a field blend of red and white grapes, approximately 35% Tempranillo, 35% Albillo Mayor and the rest a mixture of many different varieties (Garnacha, Bobal, Bruñal, Monastrell, Tempranillo Gris, other Albillos, Garnacha Blanca, Pirules, Jaén, Moscatel, Malvasías...) from different old vines in the village of La Aguilera. It's a wine with aromas of a white and the soul of a red, really different from...

Organically grown Garnacha and Samso (Carignan) grown in calcareous clay and "panal" soils. Native yeast fermentation in large cement tanks. It is aged an addition 6 months in tank. Bright and fresh, this is a Mediterranean wine, with red fruits, cherries, plums, dark berries, herbs and subtle minerality.

Grown in the Las Batuecas Sierra de Francia Natural Park, a UNESCO protected as a national park biosphere reserve, near the Portuguese border due west from Madrid. Rufete is more commonly seen across the border, in the Douro or in the Dao. It is a thin skinned variety that produces lighter bodied, fresh wines with a delicate spice and savory tones. Think of this like Spanish Schiava, it too is grown in the mountains, these vineyards are located at 850 meters. This is an incredible aperitif wine, ideal with Jamon. The grapes are organically grown. 20...

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From granite and clay soils, the reductive 2018 Encinas fermented in concrete and matured in an oak vat. The reduction should eventually go, but it gives it an old-time Cornas profile. Mencía is quite reductive and it shows here. But the palate is superb, especially in the cooler and fresher 2018 vintage. The wine has stuffing and freshness, and the traditional, somewhat rustic profile should turn into a beauty in bottle. It needs time and air, as that reductive character reveals itself in a flinty way with a tou...

94 points Vinous: "Deep garnet. Mineral- and smoke-accented red berry, cherry and candied rose aromas are complemented by a spicy nuance that builds with air. Densely packed, energetic black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors show sharp detail and strong back-end lift. Finishes silky and emphatically spicy, with polished tannins lending shape to impressively persistent red fruit and floral notes. (JR)" (06/2021) K&L Notes: 60% Merenzao, 30% Mencia, 10% Garnacha Tintorera.

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The red 2018 Mestizaje was produced with a blend of 70% Bobal, 19% Garnacha and 11% full-cluster Syrah from head-pruned and dry-farmed vines from their El Terrerazo estate planted mostly in the early 1990s on limestone soils. Each plot and grape variety was fermented separately with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and oak vats. It matured in a mixture of oak vats and French barrique for 11 months (there has been a change toward more and more vats and almost no barrels). This has a creamy touch, attractive, a...

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Beautiful, with lots of cassis, blackberry, graphite, camphor, and acacia flower notes on the nose, the 2017 Vinas Viejas hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, elegant texture, ripe tannins, and a gorgeous finish. A blend of 65% Monastrell, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Garnacha, brought up in 75% new French oak, it's the real deal and will keep for 7-8 years, probably longer." (03/2021)
Price: $13.99

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The young Mencía 2018 Unculín is surprisingly floral and elegant, with a medium-bodied palate that shows harmonious, and it has the depth and clout of old vines, as if it's a much more serious wine. It fermented with 10% to 20% full clusters in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in stainless steel and oak foudre for six months."

Algueira proves with this wine that they not only excel at making first rate, oak aged wine from their Ribeira Sacra holdings, but a delicious unoaked example as well. This bottling typically shows spicy dark cherry and plum fruit, and a delightfully fresh and crisp palate. Nuanced, layered flavors for a mere unoaked young Mencia based wine. Very highly recommended!

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Estrecho was cropped from a more unusual, cooler and wetter year. It's produced with a very soft vinification in 2,000-liter oak vats and new barriques. It was bottled after 15 months in oak. This is a powerful vintage; the wine has clout, power and concentration and a little more rusticity (the textbook tree bark!) than the 2017 that I tasted together with this one. There are some dusty tannins and an earthy, chalky sensation on the palate. The 2017 feels more precise than this, but the only problem wit...
