Mas Codina is a 40-hectare estate in Penedès which dates back to 1681. This Brut Reserva Cava was hand-harvested from 25- to 40-year-old vines and estate-bottled. Though it does not say it on the label, the current disgorgement is based entirely on the 2015 harvest. Vines are planted in calcareous and sandy clay soils which keep the wine minerally and lively. The wine undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle, and is aged on its lees for a minimum of two years before disgorgement. Varietals include Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. 100%...

Jesús Puelles is one of the most talented vignerons in Rioja. Hailing from a long line of vineyard worker/owners, Puelles knows the terruño in his little slice of land in the Rioja Alta town of Abalos. Most of the grapes for his red wines come from his own 20 hectares, which are north-facing and located at 600 meters in altitude, affording the visitor with one of the most dramatically beautiful views of Rioja's main mountain ranges: the Sierra Cantabria mountains immediately to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda mountains to the south. This white win...

Amats is both the brand name of the Txakoli as well as one of Zudugarai's vineyards. It's a beautiful vineyard, a sandy substrate covered in naturally growing green cover crops between the rows, with the Cantabrian Sea in full view to the north. Produced from Hondarribi Zuri grapes, this is classic Txakoli: zippy, crisp, tart green apple flavors are enlivened by a lovely sparkle from the CO2 retained in tank during fermentation.

Our seventh vintage of this direct import Albariño, this wine shows everything we like in the grape: hints of lemongrass, lively stone fruit, and a brisk, saline-tinged palate. Located in the sub-zone of Condado do Tea, where the days are a bit warmer and evenings are slightly cooler, there is a wonderful mid-palate presence to complement the typically lean and mineral qualities of Albariño. A classic with any shellfish, especially Dungeness crab!

Based in the Southern Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is bodega producing expressive, regionally specific wines at very reasonable prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and snow-covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. Martínez Alesanco's Blanco is made from equal parts Viura, White Tempranillo, Malvasi...

Can Mayol, which bottles under the trademarked name "Loxarel," is a winery that has farmed organically for 15 years. The Mitjan family, owners of Can Mayol, also employ some biodynamic treatments. They keep animals, including chickens, a horse, and a donkey named Garnatxa. While the focus is on "Brut Nature" (no dosage added) sparkling wine production, they also produce some very interesting still wines. In their chalky, high-altitude vineyards (above 2,400 feet for their highest vines, among the highest in the Penedès D.O.), Xarel-lo, Macabeo, Parellada...

Native South African Bryan MacRobert grew up in a farming family and has been quietly making some of that country's best value wines. He fell in love with a girl from Rioja as well as the region's wines (we forget in which order) but quickly became fascinated with the inimitable terroirs and endless potential for wines in the region. A proponent not only of organic viticulture, but also a strong believer in the importance of legacy organically cultivated vines on top quality sites, Bryan is picky about where he grows and sources vines. The winemaking is ...

2020 Txomin Etxaniz Txakolina Getariako
Top Pick!
92 points Decanter: "Made in the classic style, this blend of the two main Txakoli grapes – 85% Hondarrabi Zuri, 15% Hondarrabi Beltza – is fresh and lean with a spiky acidity punctuated by green apples, lime and a fizz of sherbet lemons. There’s a delightful tingle of petillance which sets it off nicely and introduces a slight mineral note on the finish. It cries out for oysters. (CW)" (06/2021) 92 points Vinous: "Limpid, green-hued straw. Taut and sharply focused on the nose, displaying vibrant citrus zest, quince and floral scents and a chalky miner...

Finca Garabato is a parcel of Valtea's oldest wines. You will notice that it says "2o Año" on the label, which refers to the fact that it ages in tank on its lees for a year following fermentation. This gives the wine a lovely richness, which really ramps up the flavor and textural qualities of the wine. Still refreshing, only richer than the regular Valtea bottling and ready to take on a meal.

91 points James Suckling: "Pretty nose of lemon blossom, white lavender, apricot and melon. Some anise, too. It’s medium-bodied with fresh acidity. Clean and bright expression. Vegan. Drink now." (02/2021) K&L Notes: Vinos del Viento is our most recent addition to our Direct import portfolio from Spain. It is a project that focuses on Garnacha and Cariñena (Grenache and Carignan) from the region that is the origin for both varieties, Aragon. All of the DO’s of Aragon are represented in the portfolio; Campo de Borja, Calatayud, Carinena and Somontano....

Petillant naturel, aka "pet nat" is here to stay, and this is our favorite Spanish rendition of this popular sparkling wine style. The "Apel" is a Xarel-lo based methode ancestrale, allowed to naturally ferment prior to being bottled and then fermented fully dry, possessing just the right amount of sugar while in bottle to convert into trapped CO2. The resulting wine is dry, expressive, elegantly textured and more-ish as can be! Can Mayol, which bottles under the trademarked name "Loxarel," is a winery that has farmed organically for 15 years. The Mitjan...

The birthplace for Garnacha Blanca is Terra Alta. It’s two closest neighbouring wine regions are Montsant and Priorat. The secret to Terra Alta success with white varietals while its neighbors are so famous for their reds, limestone. 95% of the soils here are limestone, the secret sauce to some of the worlds great white wines. Vinos Piñol is a family run estate that makes only a small amount of wines from their certified organic vineyards. The Portal Blanco is 85% old vine Garnacha Blanca with the remainder being Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc, that wa...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The non-vintage Dry Amontillado Los Arcos Solera Reserva reveals a medium amber hue along with a nutty, honeyed, dry personality with great acid...The portfolio of under $25 a bottle selections represents remarkable value for their complex, well-made personalities. Lustau includes a bottling date code as purchasers would want to buy Finos and Manzanillas as young as possible. It is difficult to describe the glories of sherry, but I’ll try. These Solera Reservas are all great reference points at a low price point ...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The eponymous 2016 Tricó is a classic Albariño from 25- to 35-year-old vineyards on poor granite soils that give low yields. The full clusters are pressed, then the juice is let to settle before fermenting at low temperature with neutral yeasts. This stays at least one year in tank before it's bottled. These are serious and subtle wines, not exuberant or showy, with good ripeness and very high compensating acidity, but the wines don't feel acidic. This has the advantage of time and has developed further complexit...

2020 La Caña Albariño Rías Baixas
Top Pick!
92 points Vinous: "Light, vivid yellow. Fresh, mineral-tinged pear, nectarine, melon and floral scents are complemented by hints of honey, lemon curd and chamomile. Silky and expansive on the palate, offering energetic orchard and citrus fruit flavors that tighten up and turn spicier through the back half. Finishes very long and nervy, with repeating florality and a spicy jolt of candied ginger. (JR)" (06/2021)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The first Albariño to be bottled is the 2019 Leirana, which I was also able to compare with the 2018 vintage. It's the one that represents the character of the Valle del Salnés, as it's produced with grapes from different villages across the valley. This ferments in a combination of 60% stainless steel vats and 40% oak foudres, where the wine matures for six months. Contrary to what I've seen at other addresses, this 2019 is very closed and backward; it's a vintage with very high acidity, citrus and salt. This is...

The Bodegas Casa Monte Pío is a small family winery that was established in 1979. It is located in the Salnes Valley which is considered the heart of the Rias Baixas region. The vines are planted in primarily granitic sandy soils and they are farmed organically with some biodynamic principles. They are obsessed with the healthy of their soils and vines. This obsession is seen in the ripeness and purity of their fruit which is contrasted by the classic mineral salinity which the region is known for.

Do Ferreiro is a benchmark Albariño. Every year, it delivers the goods, showing a degree of aromatic complexity, nervy minerality, and pure intensity of flavor that always makes it stand out from the rest. Delicious upon release, it is also one of the few Albariños to improve in bottle for up to a decade (maybe longer?) beyond the vintage year. There is bright fruit intermingling with the classic Do Ferreiro salty/smoky mineral bite. Enjoy this wine on its own or with all types of seafood.

92 points Vinous: "Light yellow. Lively and sharply focused on the nose, displaying fresh citrus and orchard fruit scents and subtle vanilla and floral overtones. Shows sharp definition and spicy lift to the Meyer lemon, pear and honeysuckle flavors, which deepen through the midpalate. Closes long and juicy, with repeating florality and a dusty mineral flourish. (JR)" (04/2021)

This is a very special Albariño, very small production (1120 bottles produced!). You might have noticed that it is labeled Galicia. This is a single vineyard, one hectare, located near the town of A Cañiza, which is not part of any Galicia DO. It is located between Rias Baixas and Ribeiro, and the wine tastes just like that. It has the precision, cut and minerality of the former and carries the weight, aromatics and forwardness of the later. The grapes are farmed organically with some biodynamics, indigenous yeast fermentation and bottles with low sulfur...

93 points Wine & Spirits: "Extremely dry, this austere Amontillado comes from the white chalky albariza soils of the famed Macharnudo vineyard. It aged under flor for about eight years, and then spent eight more years aging oxidatively before being bottled. At first, it shows only the classic flavors of iodine and salt, with enchanting sea breeze notes. You have to wait for the fruit flavors to emerge, notes of roasted white fruit and nuts emerging in the midst of its cool flavors. Only for fans of super-dry Sherry, this is ideal for mojama, cured tuna b...

This is a sherry experience not to miss. This wine starts off as a Manzanilla. It spent 8 years under flor and then another 6 years aging in oxidatively. Yes, the math does not add up, but this is not a math class and they don't have to show all of their work, especially when the wine tastes as good as this. It is bracing, that core of Manzanilla, but also rich on the nose, with an incredibly detailed nutty aroma that ranges from almonds to walnuts. In the mouth it is a powerful, focused wine with a subtle cinnamon component, completely dry and incred...

94 points Wine & Spirits: "Notes of anise and clove distinguish this robust Oloroso, accenting its salinity. It recalls the coasts of Jerez with aromas and flavors of iodine, salt and the signature earthy dampness of Hidalgo's very old soleras. Firm on the palate, with sharp acidity that penetrates the depths of the wine's flavors, this would be delicious with clams sautéed in olive oil and garlic." (06/2009) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Shows lovely focus and persistence, with a prominent thread of bitter almond that runs from start to finish, while sin...

Composed primarily of Treixadura, this delicious Galician white has terrific freshness as well as a lovely rounded texture, with yellow fruit flavors and subtle minerality. Goto de Gomariz carefully farms their vines organically, with some Fukuoka influence as well, so they do not spray herbicides or insecticides, and use the bare minimum of treatments to keep the vines healthy. One of the leading producers in a D.O. where there the qualitative bar continues to rise each year.

100% Garnacha Blanca grown in the stony, calcareous soils of Terra Alta. The fruit was harvested in two passes, the first earlier in the season when the potential alcohol was at 11% and later at 14%. The fruit was fermented with native yeast in stainless steel. It then saw an additional 6 months of aging on its fine lees. *organic*

95 points Wine & Spirits: "Inocente is Valdespino’s flagship, a wine from the Macharnudo Alto vineyard, where the soil is pure white albariza. It ferments in 600-liter wooden casks without added yeasts, a practice that has become increasingly rare in Jerez. The intensity of the wine’s salinity is remarkable—iodine and salt—coming together with ripe white fruit, scents of nuts and exotic spices. The structure is dry and austere, like drinking the juice of stones. This will last for a decade in the cellar, but it’s impossible to hold onto a bottle if there...

92 points Wine & Spirits: "Don't be put off by the intensely resinous scent; this is a complex, classic manzanilla, with dark nut notes in the intense flor-driven flavor and a brisk sea-salt edge. Under the flor, hints of lemon zest, dried apple and almonds merge in a delicate balance. Ideal with nothing more than a handful of marcona almonds." (04/2005) 90 points Wine Spectator: "Very high-pitched, with bright chalk, chamomile, salt and lemon seed notes. The vigorous finish has serious cut. Jancis Robinson: "Benchmark classic smoky-salty nose. Hay. Subtle, beautifully fresh, moderately sustained. Mouth-wateringly dry. Reliable and *Good Value* (JH)" (04/2016) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Talking about which, the NV Tio Pepe Fino is an icon of Sherry wine. Produced from Palomino grapes aged in the Tio Pepe solera for an average of four years under flor. It has a light nose of dried flowers, almonds and olives, in a subtle way and a dry palate dominated by the chalky notes. Light and easy to drink, it is a good introduction to Fino Sherr...

To honor the 100th anniversary of this well known Rioja white, Cune decided to hit their cellars and uncork a number of vintages to see how they had aged. It turns out that the bottlings from the late 1950's to the early 1970's had aged fantastically, and the person who had made these landmark wines was none other than our friend, the legendary Ezequiel "El Brujo" García! They brought in Ezequiel, who in turn brought in his copious notes, and contributed his expertise and years of experience to the project. This Rioja white is a delicious throwback to Cu...

93 points Wine & Spirits: "Deliciosa grows at the Pago Miraflores in Sanlúcar de Barrameda and it’s typically aged for five years under flor. This lastest saca shows a lovely mix of almond flavors, salt and white fruit, all melding into the wine’s deep mineral notes. It’s substantial enough to serve in the company of blackened redfish." (08/2018) Jancis Robinson: "Slightly darker than some. Really nutty aroma, chewy, great freshness and a yeasty richness. Super-fresh and full of yeasty umami character as well as dried grasses. 92 points Wine & Spirits: "This is a selection from botas of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez raised separately and then blended to age for three years in solera. The result puts the sweetness of the PX in front, with flavors of plum jam and tobacco. The salinity of the Oloroso brings freshness and fine minerality that play softly in the background. Its solid palate is under control and not syrupy, tapering into brown sugar and fig flavor...

91 points James Suckling: "A dense and tangy white with dried pineapple, apple and lemon-rind character. Full body. Thick yet fresh. Drink now. " (07/2019) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The fruit-driven and young 2018 Font de la Figuera Blanco has aromas of white fruit and a touch of fennel and Mediterranean herbs. It's fresh and has nice balance, balsamic flavors and a dry, faintly bitter finish. It ends quite tasty and with focused, pure flavors. (LG)" (08/2019)

94 points Vinous: "Pale yellow-gold. Mineral-accented nectarine, orange, pear, smoky minerals and white flowers on the intensely perfumed nose. Smooth, seamless and vibrant in the mouth, offering concentrated orchard and pit fruit flavors complemented by suggestions of tarragon, sweet butter and candied lemon peel. Shows excellent depth as well as vivacity and finishes minerally, smoky and impressively long, with lingering citrus fruit and floral notes. Juanjo Tellaetxe Tantaka grew up in a remote river valley in the Basque province of Araba. As a child Juanjo would walk with the shepherds as they followed their flocks through the valley. His family has lived for generations in Araba, the family cemetery is in the same river canyon as Juanjo’s vineyards. The steep mountains protect the valley from the harsh coastal winds blowing off of the Atlantic. The valley is humid and cool most of the year creating long hang times for the grapes. During the rainy season waterfalls cascade down sheer cliff sides and...

Muti Albariño was conceived as a tribute to Patrick Mata’s mother Christiane, with whom he spoke German at home – “Muti” means “Mom” in German. Made by Rodrigo Mendez and Patrick’s lifelong friend and co-founder of Olé, Alberto Orte, Muti is a classic expression of Salnes Albarino. Muti is sourced from three different sites. The first vineyard was planted in 1912, with granite soil, located in the town of Palina, just 30 meters (100 feet) from the Atlantic Ocean. The other vineyards were planted in 1972, located in the towns of Meaño and Dena. All in all...

91 points Wine Spectator: "This is bright for a cream Sherry, with green tea and singed ginger notes out front, providing heft to the date, raisin, caramel and charred bourbon barrel accents. The sleek finish lets the green tea edge reemerge, with well-embedded acidity for length. Drink now. (JM)" (10/2013) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Smooth and sweet, like a cream Sherry is supposed to be. On the nose, this one easily shifts from ripe apricot and peach fruit to nuts and saline. The palate starts with a blast of coffee and mocha and then folds in brown...

Made from Macabeo and Xarel-lo from vines up to 50 years old in the Penedes region, best known for Cava (Avinyo also makes good Cavas) this is a delicious, thirst quenching wine that hints at Muscat's floral and herbal, tarragon-like qualities, but also shows great cut, with delicious citrus and appley fruits, refreshing fizziness, and a dry finish that begs another (large) sip. Think Txakoli, but with a touch lower acidity and an appealing faintly herbal quality.
