Finca Garabato is a parcel of Valtea's oldest wines. You will notice that it says "2o Año" on the label, which refers to the fact that it ages in tank on its lees for a year following fermentation. This gives the wine a lovely richness, which really ramps up the flavor and textural qualities of the wine. Still refreshing, only richer than the regular Valtea bottling and ready to take on a meal.

Based in the Southern Rioja Alta village of Badarán, Martínez Alesanco is bodega producing expressive, regionally specific wines at very reasonable prices. They are entirely self reliant in grapes, all of which are grown in their home village of Badarán, one of the coldest zones of Rioja Alta. The vineyards are closer to the Sierra de la Demanda mountains, a range whose elevation and snow-covered peaks are even more dramatic than the Sierra Cantabria range to the north. Martínez Alesanco's Blanco is made from equal parts Viura, White Tempranillo, Malvasi...

Native South African Bryan MacRobert grew up in a farming family and has been quietly making some of that country's best value wines. He fell in love with a girl from Rioja as well as the region's wines (we forget in which order) but quickly became fascinated with the inimitable terroirs and endless potential for wines in the region. A proponent not only of organic viticulture, but also a strong believer in the importance of legacy organically cultivated vines on top quality sites, Bryan is picky about where he grows and sources vines. The winemaking is ...

Jancis Robinson: "Garnacha Blanca, Viura. Vineyards planted between 500 and 550 m above sea level in Briones. Old vines between 40 and 70 years old. Sustainable viticulture. Hand-harvested with selection of each variety separately for fermentation in French oak barrels of 500 litres. Temperature was controlled by moving the vats out of the winery during the nights. Blended and aged in the same vats for 11 months, then bottled. 2,600 bottles. Tasted blind. Fluid, saline, delicate with a lot of flavour and freshness thanks to notes of fennel and pear. On t...

One of the most iconic producers in Txakolina. From the importer: "Ameztoi is one of the top producers of Getariako Txakolina. They own 20 hectares of vines in the best location. From the vineyards one can see the town of St. Sebastian and understand the influence of the Atlantic Ocean on local viticulture. Made from the indigenous grape varieties of Hondarribi Zuri and its red companion Hondarribi Beltza. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and bottled with residual carbonic acid that gives the wine its natural spritz."

Bodegas Vegalfaro was founded in 1999 by Andrés Valiente and his son Rodolfo. The name of the winery is a combination of the name of their historic winery property, Casa Alfaro, and the word "vega," which is the Spanish word used to describe a lowland meadow. The wine is a marriage of French and Spanish varieties, 85% Chardonnay and 15% Macabeo, and is certified organic.

2020 Forja de Salnés "Leirana" Albariño Rías Baixas
Top Pick!
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The vibrant 2020 Leirana was produced with a blend of 60% wine matured in used oak foudre and the rest stainless steel, as the wine has very high acidity (9 to 9.5 grams with a pH of 2.99!) and doesn't go through malolactic; so, it is very sharp, and the higher percentage of oak makes it a little rounder. It's powerful and pungent, serious and with granite minerality, showcasing the serious style of the whites from 2020. It has moderate alcohol (12.9%) and an electric palate that is clean and tasty, with a stony ...

92 points Vinous: "Pale, green-tinged yellow. Lively, mineral-accented citrus and orchard fruits and succulent flowers on the nose, along with fennel and ginger accents that build as the wine stretches out. Sharply focused and lively on the palate, offering intense Meyer lemon, pear skin and honeysuckle flavors underscored by a smoky mineral quality. Shows impressive energy and minerally thrust on the finish, which hangs on with strong tenacity. Albarino is the perfect summer white, but its naturally crisp acidity and peachy citrus flavors make it enjoyable year-round as an aperitif or paired with a variety of foods, particularly shellfish and seafood. It hails from the Rias Baixas zone of Galicia, on the northwest coast of Spain. Walk through any given fishing village along the "rias" (fjords) in this beautiful, cool, maritime-influenced region and you will find fresh grilled pulpo (octopus) vendors at every corner! A classic Albarino nose of white peach, citrus and mineral aromas gives way to ...

92 points Wine & Spirits: "Consistently one of the finest traditional manzanillas you'll ever taste, La Gitana might as well be the Webster's entry for the category: pale straw color, salty seaside freshness and a dry, tangy, yet rich flavor. And that flavor lingers after each sip, too, like sea spray." (04/2005) 92 points Wine Spectator: "A bright, high-pitched style, showing tangy quinine and chamomile notes laced with talc and fleur de sel flavors. Very dry, brisk, stony-edged finish. An absolute delight. (JM)" (05/2018) Jancis Robinson: "Greenish...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The non-vintage Dry Amontillado Los Arcos Solera Reserva reveals a medium amber hue along with a nutty, honeyed, dry personality with great acid...The portfolio of under $25 a bottle selections represents remarkable value for their complex, well-made personalities. Lustau includes a bottling date code as purchasers would want to buy Finos and Manzanillas as young as possible. It is difficult to describe the glories of sherry, but I’ll try. These Solera Reservas are all great reference points at a low price point ...

Bizkaiko Txakolina is the Txakolina region closest to Bilbao, more than an hour west of the more popular, and larger, Getariako. The vineyards here are inland, while the climate is 100% Atlantic it is a touch warmer, and you see that in the wines with their increased body, fruit and alcohol (a relative high alcohol content of their wines, 12.5%). This is a blend of 80% Hondarrabi Zuri and 20% Petit Courbu. The latter is an obscure varietal that is sometimes found in the blends from the wines in and near the Basque regions of France. Made with 100% palomino fino grapes from the vineyards Cartera and Macharnudo Alto, in one of the noblest vine areas or ‘pagos’ in the Sherry District, located four kilometers West-Northwest of Jerez de la Frontera. The Fino En Rama Navazos ferments with local yeasts and, after a small fortification so as to increase its alcohol content from ca. 12.5% to 15% abv, the wine enters the solera system where it has aged under a layer of flor for an average of five years. It is therefore a well aged fino, indeed far from the ten or more years of age of Equipo ...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The sparkling Clàssic Penedès 2015 Refugi, a brut nature that is completely dry, is the first wine they produced after five generations growing grapes in a haven (refugi in Catalan) in the middle of their vineyards. It's mostly Xarello with 10% Chardonnay, part fermented in new 500-liter French oak barrels and then refermented in bottle, where it was kept with the lees for a minimum of 20 months. It has a nice balance between fruit and more developed aromas and flavors of spice and yeast, and it has a balanced, t...

The Bodegas Casa Monte Pío is a small family winery that was established in 1979. It is located in the Salnes Valley which is considered the heart of the Rias Baixas region. The vines are planted in primarily granitic sandy soils and they are farmed organically with some biodynamic principles. They are obsessed with the healthy of their soils and vines. This obsession is seen in the ripeness and purity of their fruit which is contrasted by the classic mineral salinity which the region is known for.

92 points Wine & Spirits: "Don't be put off by the intensely resinous scent; this is a complex, classic manzanilla, with dark nut notes in the intense flor-driven flavor and a brisk sea-salt edge. 92 points Wine & Spirits: "Juan García Jarana, the motorcycle magnate of Jerez, sells a portion of his soleras to Lustau for this delicate Oloroso. It starts with notes of candied almonds, coconut palm syrup and caramel. The hint of salinity lends complexity and freshness, without diminishing that delicate, pleasing sweetness." (06/2009) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Just add this oloroso to the growing list of excellent Sherries from Lustau. This one is tellingly nutty on the nose, thus the hazelnut and walnut flavors are expected as they become part of...

The Canary Islands are one of the most evocative wine regions in Spain, of course they are only 1600 km away and a mere 100 km from Morocco. The wines from this volcanic archipelago have only within the last two decades started catching international wine drinkers attention, even though there is a wine making tradition that goes back before the founding of the United States. It is with the efforts of Vinatigo that the island's wines have captured the attention of domestic and international drinkers. Juan Jesus is a fourth generation winemaker who is al...

Produced from Palomino grapes aged in the Tio Pepe solera for an average of four years under flor. Avinyó calls their Petillant a vi d’agulla. It is the Catalan term for a prickly wine, a wine that is bottled with a little natural effervescence that is retained from the winemaking process. It is very similar in style to Basque Txakolina. While the more famous basque wine is made with relatively neutral varietals this is a blend of Muscat de Frontignan and the local Cava varietals of Macabeu and Xarel-lo. It has delicate floral tones backed by cool citrus fruits and minerality. Light, refreshing and with just a slight bite. This is an amazing aperit...

92 points Wine & Spirits: "This is a selection from botas of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez raised separately and then blended to age for three years in solera. The result puts the sweetness of the PX in front, with flavors of plum jam and tobacco. The salinity of the Oloroso brings freshness and fine minerality that play softly in the background. 93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The NV Alvear Amontillado Carlos VII is a beauty, with more elegance and purity than the Criadera A release. Caramelized citrus, honey, salted peanuts, hints of blue cheese, and tons of spice notes all flow to a powerful yet elegant sherry that has bright acidity and a beautiful finish. This release can be thought of as a very old Fino where the flor has died and sunk to the bottom of the barrel, exposing the wine to oxygen and oxidation, which concentrates the wine (and raises the alcohol)." Composed primarily of Treixadura, this delicious Galician white has terrific freshness as well as a lovely rounded texture, with yellow fruit flavors and subtle minerality. Goto de Gomariz carefully farms their vines organically, with some Fukuoka influence as well, so they do not spray herbicides or insecticides, and use the bare minimum of treatments to keep the vines healthy. An incredible 8-10 year average age Manzanilla, the Aurora is our newest Manzanilla and one of our more exciting Sanluqueño offerings in quite a while!
