2018 Black Slate "Escaladei" Vi de la Vila Priorat
Top Pick!
92 points Vinous: "Deep, shimmering violet. Lively dark berry, potpourri and licorice aromas are complemented by smoky mineral and exotic spice flourishes. Juicy and lively on the palate, offering pliant black raspberry, bitter cherry and violet pastille flavors that deepen and become sweeter with air. Finishes very long and spicy, with solid mineral thrust and polished, slow-building tannins that sneak in late. (JR)" (03/2021) K&L Notes: The Vi de Vila project is mapping out of Priorat terroir in an Burgundian manner. Priorat is a dramatic appellatio...

Here is a Priorat that is not at all shy or trying to hide its Mediterranean origins, a richer, fuller bodied style especially considering its modest price. That said, the wine has become increasingly fresher, a development that is particularly apparent in this juicy, well delineated 2016. It is a well-balanced, tasty blend of Garnacha, Carignane, and just a tiny amount of Cabernet Sauvignon.

2018 Clos Erasmus "Laurel" Priorat
Top Pick!
96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The second wine here and one that is easier to drink, the 2018 Laurel was produced with fruit from the younger vines, a couple of barrels that are declassified from Clos Erasmus and the Cabernet Sauvignon, more or less 70% Garnacha and 15% each Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. It has good ripeness and still a pH of 3.3. It fermented mostly in oak vats and 2,000-liter concrete vats with indigenous yeasts and matured for 18 months in 20,000-liter oak and concrete vats, second use barriques and some clay amphorae. It's...

93 points James Suckling: "weet-berry, watermelon and orange aromas follow through to a full body with soft, fine tannins and a fruity finish. Friendly and delicious. Drink now" (08/2021) 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The regional blend 2020 Camins del Priorat, produced with grapes from 101 plots from eight villages in Priorat, is a blend of 55% Garnacha, 15% Syrah, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 8% Cariñena, higher in Garnacha and lower in Cariñena, like in the majority of 2019s. That gives the wines freshness and elegance, vivacit...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The purple/black color is followed by aromas of melting tar, blueberries, blackberries, and a touch of vanillin. The wine is dense and rich with layers of flavor, the tannin well hidden by the fruit. Give this bad boy another 4-6 years of cellaring and drink it for 15 years thereafter." (02/2007) K&L Notes: 25% each of Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cariñena Vieja with a splash of Syrah and Merlot, then aged in new French wood barrels for a year.

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Based largely on Carignan, with 30% Garnacha and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Priorat has a big, smoky nose of mulled red and black fruits, graphite, flowers, and new leather. This carries to a medium to full-bodied wine with terrific tannins (especially for Carignan), a balanced, elegant texture, no hard edges, and a great finish." (03/2021) K&L Notes: This is the newest Priorat offering from Eric Solomon. Eric who has long and deep connections to the region, he has been importing wine from the region since the early '90's...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 DOIX Costers Vinyes Velles reveals a deep purple color with outstanding aromatic complexity. Notes of liquid minerality, licorice, lavender, Asian spices, and black cherry lead to a supple, savory effort loaded with spice and personality. There is a nicely concealed structure that will allow the wine to evolve for several years although it is approachable now. (JM)" (05/2011) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright ruby. A pungent, highly aromatic bouquet evokes blackberry, cherry...

Based in the village of Torroja, Terroir al Limit represents the vanguard in a newly energized Priorat. Proprietor Dominik Huber produces bright, expressive, mineral-drenched wines that are powerful and representative of Priorat, yet somehow altogether something different due to their acidity and relatively lighter, more tense style. These are wines made from grapes picked on the earlier side, that are fermented with whole clusters and then allowed to age in concrete and/or foudres - unlike many others in the region Terroir al Limit prefers these vessels...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The top Cariñena 2017 Les Tosses is a little riper than the 2018 I tasted next to it, but it also has a little more acidity and freshness and comes through as equally balanced. This south-facing vineyard was planted 90 years ago on black slate soils, and its orientations makes the grapes ripen thoroughly and achieve full flavors. Seventy percent of the volume still matured in oak foudres, but this percentage is going to go down to 50% in 2018; eventually, the wine will be aged exclusively in concrete, as is the c...

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I tasted two vintages of the top Garnacha (Peluda), so next to the 2017 Les Manyes, I also had the 2018; it was great to see the differences in the wines, even if the analytical data showed pretty similar. This amazing vineyard at 800 meters in altitude on red clay and gypsum soils has more in common with some vineyards from Montsant than the majority of other vineyards from Priorat. In 2016, they started aging the wine 100% in concrete, and they have no intention of going back. This is quite austere and compact ...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The white 2017 Pedra de Guix is a blend of one-third each Pedro Ximénez, Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo grapes from the villages of Lloar, Torroja and Poboleda, respectively. They consider this an homage to Jerez and think this is a vintage with more freshness and better acidity than previous years. It fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in well-seasoned 1,800-liter oak foudres. This is an oxidative white that in this vintage matured in less old oak than in the past, when the wine was more ...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The pure Cariñena 2018 Manyetes is now a Vi de Paratge, not only a village wine as in the past, in the new classification of the Priorat wines. 2018 was a cooler and wetter year, quite a contrast after the warm and dry 2017, and the wine has very good acidity. The vineyard is farmed organically (certified), the grapes have a slow fermentation with long macerations, and the wine matured in 50/50 barriques and foudres for 18 months. The wine is not as concentrated as it has been in some warmer years; it's definitel...
