Jancis Robinson: "Garnacha Blanca, Viura. Vineyards planted between 500 and 550 m above sea level in Briones. Old vines between 40 and 70 years old. Sustainable viticulture. Hand-harvested with selection of each variety separately for fermentation in French oak barrels of 500 litres. Temperature was controlled by moving the vats out of the winery during the nights. Blended and aged in the same vats for 11 months, then bottled. 2,600 bottles. Tasted blind. Fluid, saline, delicate with a lot of flavour and freshness thanks to notes of fennel and pear. On t...

2020 Forja de Salnés "Leirana" Albariño Rías Baixas
Top Pick!
94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The vibrant 2020 Leirana was produced with a blend of 60% wine matured in used oak foudre and the rest stainless steel, as the wine has very high acidity (9 to 9.5 grams with a pH of 2.99!) and doesn't go through malolactic; so, it is very sharp, and the higher percentage of oak makes it a little rounder. It's powerful and pungent, serious and with granite minerality, showcasing the serious style of the whites from 2020. It has moderate alcohol (12.9%) and an electric palate that is clean and tasty, with a stony ...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Viña Gravonia Blanco comes from a rainy, cool and challenging vintage when the grapes didn't reach the perfect ripeness the 2012 (that I tasted next to it) displayed. It has citrus notes (orange peel, yuzu) and an herbal twist, balsamic with the unmistakably white López de Heredia aroma of mushrooms that you smell as soon as you enter their ancient cellars. It's quite pale, and the palate is sharp and austere, quite light but with the pungent flavors and a long and tasty finish. This is a relatively simp...

From a solera begun in 1991, this spectacular Sanluqueño Amontillado contains wine of an average age of 15-20 years old. Blended in, there is a tiny amount of very old wine discovered in the bodega shortly after its purchase. It had been sealed in plaster, as the former owner was apparently determined to keep this pre-phylloxera wine, unblended, all to himself! Aromatics reveal salty flor, followed by toffee. The wine is racy on the palate, until it turns rich and succulent, with buttered and roasted pecan and almond flavors. This is really quite good. (...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "A burnished orange-meets-tawny color and lively aromas of caramel and apricot get this oloroso off to a fine start. A richly intense palate with bold acidity offers plenty of depth, while toasty flavors of coffee and walnuts finish with notes of chocolate and café latte. Overall, this is stylish and a cut above. *Editors’ Choice* (MS)" (03/2021) 92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A fortified sherry (it’s fortified to prevent the growth of Flor), the NV Alvear Oloroso Asunción (100% Pedro Ximénez) is a beautiful effort that has a great ...

Bizkaiko Txakolina is the Txakolina region closest to Bilbao, more than an hour west of the more popular, and larger, Getariako. The vineyards here are inland, while the climate is 100% Atlantic it is a touch warmer, and you see that in the wines with their increased body, fruit and alcohol (a relative high alcohol content of their wines, 12.5%). This is a blend of 80% Hondarrabi Zuri and 20% Petit Courbu. The latter is an obscure varietal that is sometimes found in the blends from the wines in and near the Basque regions of France. While just a little...

93 points Wine & Spirits: "Extremely dry, this austere Amontillado comes from the white chalky albariza soils of the famed Macharnudo vineyard. It aged under flor for about eight years, and then spent eight more years aging oxidatively before being bottled. At first, it shows only the classic flavors of iodine and salt, with enchanting sea breeze notes. You have to wait for the fruit flavors to emerge, notes of roasted white fruit and nuts emerging in the midst of its cool flavors. Only for fans of super-dry Sherry, this is ideal for mojama, cured tuna b...

Listan Blanco is also know as Palomino back on the mainland of Spain. This is an island white wine, crisp and linear with just a suggestion of salty minerality.

95 points Wine & Spirits: "Inocente is Valdespino’s flagship, a wine from the Macharnudo Alto vineyard, where the soil is pure white albariza. It ferments in 600-liter wooden casks without added yeasts, a practice that has become increasingly rare in Jerez. The intensity of the wine’s salinity is remarkable—iodine and salt—coming together with ripe white fruit, scents of nuts and exotic spices. The structure is dry and austere, like drinking the juice of stones. This will last for a decade in the cellar, but it’s impossible to hold onto a bottle if there...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I also got a last-minute bottle of the Saca Mayo 2019 of the NV Fino Tradición, which had just been bottled, and it really felt like I was drinking it straight from the bota. In fact, the palate had some tenderness that I didn't notice in the other bottlings, and the word that came to my head when drinking it was spherical, a round wine with no edges, especially after it had been in the glass for a couple of hours. The way to compare these bottlings is to pour a glass of each and follow its evolution for a couple...

91 points James Suckling: "A dense and tangy white with dried pineapple, apple and lemon-rind character. Full body. Thick yet fresh. Drink now. " (07/2019) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The fruit-driven and young 2018 Font de la Figuera Blanco has aromas of white fruit and a touch of fennel and Mediterranean herbs. It's fresh and has nice balance, balsamic flavors and a dry, faintly bitter finish. It ends quite tasty and with focused, pure flavors. (LG)" (08/2019)

The Canary Islands are one of the most evocative wine regions in Spain, of course they are only 1600 km away and a mere 100 km from Morocco. The wines from this volcanic archipelago have only within the last two decades started catching international wine drinkers attention, even though there is a wine making tradition that goes back before the founding of the United States. It is with the efforts of Vinatigo that the island's wines have captured the attention of domestic and international drinkers. Juan Jesus is a fourth generation winemaker who is al...

Eladio Pineiro is an artist. His approach to winemaking is incredibly creative and unusual. The wine spending 15 months with lees aging. This not unusual for Albarino but what is it that this wine spent 3 months aging on the less of the 2014 and 3 months aging on the lees of the 2016. I am still trying to figure out the math on that! After that it is bottled where it will age for an additional two years before release. This shows the aging potential of Albarino. The nose almost suggests old Riesling.

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2020 La Vizcaína La del Vivo is super harmonious, tasty and balanced. The wine matured in two 2,500-liter oak foudres, and a small part fermented and matured in amphorae with skins. It's varietal and expressive and comes from two plots, one with sandy soils and another one in Cacabelos with some boulders. There's always a small percentage of Doña Blanca in the blend. It's very dry and has a chalky texture. 6,000 bottles produced. (LG)" (01/2022) K&L Notes: Raul Perez has his fingers in many, many casks, fou...

93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The NV Alvear Amontillado Carlos VII is a beauty, with more elegance and purity than the Criadera A release. Caramelized citrus, honey, salted peanuts, hints of blue cheese, and tons of spice notes all flow to a powerful yet elegant sherry that has bright acidity and a beautiful finish. This release can be thought of as a very old Fino where the flor has died and sunk to the bottom of the barrel, exposing the wine to oxygen and oxidation, which concentrates the wine (and raises the alcohol)." 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: " The NV Palo Cortado Obispo Gascon, produced from Palomino grapes averaging 20 years old, and shows the telltale nose of Palo Cortado with its lactic touch and an off-dry nose of apricots, blond tobacco and spices. The palate is dominated by the salty notes (common to all Barbadillo wines), sharp, medium-bodied, with great length. Drink 2013-2019. (LG)" (08/2013) 91 points Wine Spectator: "A plump style, with glazed peach, toasted pecan and ginger notes backed by elegant green tea, ginger and incense accents. T...
