1986 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac (nicked & bin-soiled label)
Back In Stock!
100 points Decanter: "Wonderful, concentrated and still astonishingly young, this has brushes of violet aromatics rising above the tight cassis fruits and rich black truffle, and the classic menthol edging of a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Pauillac. We drank this over lunch and it was breathtaking, but were told that 24 hours later it had blossomed even further, so make sure you give this a serious amount of time in carafe to open up - something that gives you just a small clue as to how structured, layered and complex the wine we are dealing with here i...

1986 Domaine de Baraillon 37 Year Old K&L Exclusive Bas-Armagnac (750ml) (Previously $130) (Previously $130)
Top Pick!

95 points Decanter: "Vibrant deep colour, this has masses of spice box and minerals on the nose. Of course, the 86 was famous for its power and tannic structure and this is still muscular and foursquare, but the tannins are beginning to yield and soften. Very fresh acidity and classic sweet cassis fruit with notes of minerals, underbrush and tobacco. Very pure and long. Impressively, the wine had been decanted two hours previously and was still evolving in the glass more than an hour later. Tasted at Decanter Fine Wine Encounter 2015. (JS)" (12/2015) 9...

Vinous: "The 1986 l’Eglise-Clinet has a lovely bouquet that is very well defined with blackberry, camphor, cassis and violet. This is far more seductive and sensual than I anticipated. The palate is medium-bodied with stern tannins, very well balanced with savory-tinged dark berry fruits. It feels cohesive and fresh towards the dry finish that abruptly scarpers out of the door. 92 points Wine Advocate: "For L'Arrosee, this vintage has taken an atypically long time to round into shape. It has always possessed considerable power as well as a muscular, concentrated style and hefty tannin. Beginning to shed its tannin, it reveals an intriguing dusty herb, black cherry, kirsch, and mineral-scented nose, with subtle vanillin from new oak in the background. There are medium-bodied, concentrated flavors with some firm tannin, but by and large this is a very accessible wine. It remains youthful, with only a hint of amber at the edge of ...

95 points Wine Spectator: "Powerful, magnificent, complex and rich, with generous black cherry, currant and vanilla aromas and flavors shining through the tough tannins, turning a bit chocolatey on the finish. Has everything it needs to age classically." (06/1989) Wine Advocate: "The 1986 has a deep ruby/garnet color, and a spicy bouquet of toasty new oak, rich, plummy fruit, and minerals. This is followed by a wine that is full bodied and intense, with impressive extract, and tremendous power and persistence in its finish. It does not have the opulenc...

95 points Decanter: "Marvellous old Bordeaux with delicate cassis, graphite, and faded violet nuances. A legendary wine for this estate, equal to the 1982 but ageing better. (ID)" (10/2014) 95 points Wine Advocate: "Now at 30 years of age, there is a gulf between the two Pichons in this vintage that no longer exists. The 1986 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande has long been one of the best wines from the estate alongside the 1982 (even if the first bottle was a little oxidized). The second bottle was representative. It has a classic pencil-lead, ce...

91 points John Gilman: "The 1986 Château Meyney has been one of the great values of the vintage since its release and it has fulfilled all of its early promise and continues to cruise along very well indeed. To give younger readers some idea of just how good a value this wine was on release, I sold it for $11.99 a bottle and one received 10% off if they bought a case. Needless to say, I sold a ton of cases of this wine. Today, it is drinking very nicely, offering up a complex bouquet of cassis, dark berries, a nice touch of new leather, tobacco leaf, gra...

100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 1986 Mouton-Rothschild is a behemoth that almost has a California-like richness and sweetness of fruit. Offering incredible yet classic Cabernet Sauvignon notes of crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, lead pencil shavings, and wood smoke, this beauty starts out reticent and backward (which is mind blowing for a wine that’s 32 years old) yet opens up gorgeously with time in the glass. Full-bodied, deep, rich and unctuous, yet still incredibly pure and lively, it’s a sensational, benchmark Bordeaux that probably has another 2+ decade...

1986 Domaine Séailles 34 Year Old Ténarèze Armagnac (700ml) (Previously $90) (Previously $90)
Top Pick!
This Armagnac, produced from a small estate plot, was distilled in 1986 and aged for 34 years in 400L barrels before being bottled at 46% ABV. From the importer: "Domaine Séailles is one of the pioneers of organic viticulture in the Côtes de Gascogne region of Southwest France. A family-owned estate since 1961, Séailles is now run by Jean Labérenne, who lead the domaine to Ecocert organic certification in 1997, swearing off all chemical fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and synthetic chemical products. Located in the town of Ténarèze, which is uniqu...

This is the second wine of Leoville-Las Cases. Robert Parker in the Wine Advocate: "The quality level of the second wine of Leoville-Las Cases is unquestionably better than some of Bordeaux's famed 1855 classification's second- and third-growths," while Neal Martin agrees: "Others may disagree, but I would rate the second wine Clos du Marquis as the best in Bordeaux. The wine has a long history, initiated in 1904 under the aegis of Théophile Skawinski with the 1902 vintage, portending the proliferation of second wines in the 1980's. The wine is sourced f...

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1986 Montrose, St-Estèphe (98DC, 95WS, 92RP). Decanter: "This is a masterclass in the ageing aromas of Bordeaux. It sits exactly at the spot at which you still have a tightening and a menthol freshness on this finish, with cassis fruit that is still very much tight and young, but where the more gentle, spicy, brushed almond and cedar flavours start to intrude. Beautiful wine, amazing, it deepens through the palate, the expression changes and evolves, it's tertiary but still with flesh, gorgeous. (JA)" (03/2017)
Current Bid: $400.00

Bid on this bottle of 1986 Cheval Blanc, St-Émilion (93JG, 93RP). Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the château, the 1986 Cheval Blanc has a far superior bouquet to the 1996 Cheval Blanc when I tasted them side by side. The aromatics here are far more cohesive and complex, very delineated with expressive Cabernet Franc, hints of cooked meat, cranberry, juniper berries and wilted rose petals - just gorgeous. The palate is beautifully balanced with slightly furry tannin that is offset by a superb seam of acidity. It is nicely structured but not overbearing, leather and truffle filtering through the black fruit and while there is a little austerity on the finish, it is purely complementary. Though 1986 is not known as a Right Bank vintage, the 1986 Cheval Blanc pulled victory out of the bag and at 30 years, it continues to give immense pleasure. (NM)" (12/2016)

Bid on this bottle of 1986 E. Guigal "La Mouline" Côte-Rôtie (94WS, 91RP, 90ST). Wine Spectator: "Very firm and still young. The toasty, spicy oak flavors are beautifully balanced by lush berry and plum notes. (TM)" (11/1995)
