2021 Baron de Montfaucon Côtes-du-Rhône Blanc
Top Pick!
Wine Spectator: "Delivers delicate, fresh green plum and fleshy melon flavors, with savory flint, citrus zest and apple blossom accents on a lithe frame. (KB, Web-2023)" K&L Notes: Just across the Rhône river from the esteemed vineyards of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this 88-acre estate is owned and operated by Rodolphe de Pins, a UC Davis graduate and former member of the winemaking staff at Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe. Montfaucon crafts their Côtes du Rhônes to express the intense fruit characteristics of the appellation, blending to achieve harmony and bala...

2005 Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Sauternes
Top Pick!
95 points James Suckling: "This is powerful and racy with lots of class. Full body, very sweet with lots of spicy botrytis character. Intense. Drink or hold. " (10/2012) 93 points The Wine Independent: "The 2005 Lafaurie-Peyraguey is medium lemon-gold in color. It is a little subdued to begin, giving way to notes of lemon marmalade, honey-coated nuts, and unsmoked cigars with touches of spice cake and Ceylon tea. The palate has soft acidity and bags of opulent, honey-laced stone fruit, finishing long and spicy. (LPB)" (12/2022) 93 points Wine Enthusi...

Château L’Avocat is from the small commune of Cérons, which is located just north of Barsac and Sauternes in the southern Graves appellation. I met Nicola Allison in Napa Valley at a small conference of Women from Bordeaux and Napa Valley. She followed my advice by sending her wines to our hotel in April to be tasted, and Clyde and I liked them. I followed up by visiting the estate almost eight weeks later and was given a tour of their gravelly vineyards by her husband Sean, who manages the vines.

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Getting a big “Wow” in my notes, the 2017 Chateau Rieussec is an extraordinary Sauternes that has everything. Awesome notes of orange zest, honeyed flowers, ripe pineapple, peach, and spice all soar from the glass, and this beauty is already complex, has full-bodied richness and power, a great mid-palate, and a beautiful spine of acidity. It's a brilliant, brilliant wine that can be enjoyed today or cellared for two decades or more" (02/2020) 97-98 points James Suckling: "This is very focused and an intense with so much spice an...

95 points Wine Advocate: "Tasted in Sauternes with Charles Chevalier, the 1988 Rieussec is a vintage that Chevalier himself claimed to be his favorite. I can understand why. It has an unerringly youthful bouquet with vibrant citrus fruit, wild honey, mandarin and mineral scents, a bouquet that seems to have electricity flowing through it. The same can be said for the palate that is full of tension and vigor, almost clinical in terms of focus with alluring viscosity and wonderful length. This bowled me over with its charm and breeding. Hunt a bottle down ...

95 points The Wine Independent: "Medium to deep straw-gold in color, the 2005 Coutet delivers alluring candied nut scents of praline and honey walnuts over a core of dried apricots and mangos with a touch of pineapple upside-down cake. Full-on hedonic in the mouth, it has opulent layers and just enough freshness, finishing long. (LPB)" (07/2022) 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Surprisingly dry, this has richness rather than sweetness, and intense, powerful botrytis. The honey is intensely perfumed, along with baked apples and spice. Certainly a long-aging ...

Decanter: "Green apple, pear and white peach aromas on the nose. The palate is bright and zesty, alive and vibrant with succulent but also softly sweet lemon flavours, assisted by quite mineral-edged apricot and peach. This has a cool element to it, the refreshing side really prominent. It's not too showy, but refined and easy to drink. (GH)" (03/2022) James Suckling: "This has aromas of lime zest, green mango, basil and white grapefruit. It’s medium-bodied with vibrant tropical and citrus fruit. Tasty fresh mango notes. " (12/2022) Vinous: "The 2021...

92 points Int'l Wine Cellar: "Complex, classy aromas of nectarine, apricot, smoke and roasted grain. Very rich and concentrated; full and sweet for Barsac but carrying no excess weight. Lovely pliant texture. Finishes very long, spicy and fresh. A very elegant wine with an impressively long, spicy aftertaste. " (07/2000) 92 points Vinous: "Complex, classy aromas of nectarine, apricot, smoke and roasted grain. Very rich and concentrated; full and sweet for Barsac but carrying no excess weight. 94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Extravagantly rich, this is dense and supersweet initially, just balanced with acidity. The botrytis dryness is really not here at this stage, but with its elegant creamy texture, wood flavors still very present. This is still at the very beginning of its development. (RV)" (06/2008) 93 points Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind at the 10-Year On Tasting in Sauternes. The 2005 Château La Tour Blanche has a complex nose with lemon sherbet, orange sorbet, honey and jasmine all soaring from the glass without a care in the world. The p...

93 points Decanter: "Bright and lively in the glass, tangy and sharp but so well balanced with intensity yet softness, getting the liveliness and energy but also complexity of flavour - lemon, pineapple, apricot and peach - sharp, almost sour, so tangy and zesty in the glass just shining brightly. This is extremely aromatic and flavourful with a persistence that lasts the whole way through. I also like the really soft honeyed lemon touch that runs underneath the more overt acidity. A solid effort. Tasted twice. (GH)" (03/2022) 93 points Jane Anson: "Th...

In 1855, château Romer du Hayot was awarded the rank of second cru classé, not long after the Hayot family took over the property in 1851. The du Hayot family is proud that their ownership of the estate predates the origin of Sauternes wines which were initially produced in the mid-19th century. The fifth generation, Catherine Boyer du Hayot carries on the family tradition, as the estate continues to craft wines of the finest quality.

1959 d'Yquem, Sauternes (high shoulder, soiled label)
Top Pick!
97 points John Gilman: " The 1959 Yquem is a great vintage and the wine is at its absolute zenith at the present time and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The utterly profound bouquet soars from the glass in a blaze of oranges, white cherries, honeyed nuts, crème brulée, new leather, great minerality, barley sugar and gentle topnotes of candied orange peel. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, long and very, very refined, with a rock solid core, impeccable balance, laser-like focus and simply stunning acidity for a nearly fifty year-o...

2001 d'Yquem, Sauternes
Top Pick!
100 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A brilliant sweet wine that tops out on my scale, the 2001 Château D'Yquem is now fully mature yet still vibrant and pure, with an incredible nose of honeyed marmalade, caramelized tropical fruits, rising bread, marzipan, and lavender. Incredibly complex, full-bodied, and unctuous on the palate, it's one of those rare wines that can deliver incredible richness and decadence while staying pure, light on its feet, and perfectly balanced. A wine that every wine lover should taste once in their life, it should be just about immortal....

91 points Decanter: "Another great Australian Viognier, this time from the Barossa. ‘Love child’ refers to an in-joke at the winery that it was winemaker Stephen Dew’s favourite variety. Less expressive on the nose than some wines in this selection, but opens up beautifully in the glass. A rich, barrel-fermented character, though it finishes bright and crisp. (FB)" (12/2020) 91 points Vinous: "Green-tinged straw. Fresh orchard and citrus fruit aromas are complemented by hints of violet and sweet butter. Sappy pear nectar and white peach flavors display...

98 points Decanter: "This stands out from the rest - white flowers, bitter orange, mandarin and smoked caramel are met at every step by lift and tension. A beautiful wine that keeps on delivering. (JA)" (03/2018) 97 points Vinous: "Gracious, light on its feet and positively sublime, the 2015 Climens is one of the wines of the vintage. Its airiness and grace are hard to capture with words. Lightly honeyed notes, chamomile and exotic flowers lead into orchard fruit and candied citrus in this impeccably polished, nuanced Barsac. I would prefer to cellar t...

96-97 points James Suckling: "This is really something. I have never tasted a Guiraud like this. This is full-bodied yet so fresh and incredibly crisp and lively. Spicy and energetic. Fantastic acidity!" (04/2016) 94-96 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is packed with dry botrytis flavor, but also a bright freshness. Together they give an obviously sweet wine good structure as well as ripeness. The tension between the fruit and the mineral texture will allow this wine to age for many years. (RV)" (04/2018) 93-95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Another rockstar Sauternes is the 2017 Château Guiraud, which has the freshness and purity of the vintage, yet ample depth and richness. Caramelized limes, citrus, and ample minerality all emerge from this full-bodied, impeccably balanced dessert wine. Its acidity is present yet integrated, and it has a great mid-palate and a big finish, ...

99 points Wine Spectator: "A lovely, creamy, tropical style, with mango, papaya and guava notes lending a caressing feel, while singed almond and warm piecrust accents blossom through the lush finish. Just when you think that's all there is, toasted coconut, fig, orange blossom and persimmon details kick in, lending length and dimension. The finish is ridiculously long. Best from 2020 through 2060. (JM)" (03/2014) 98 points Int'l Wine Cellar: "Luminous golden yellow. Cool, pure aromas of white peach, honeyed mango, guava nectar, white flowers and saffr...

"The first sorting occurred on September 16 and 17 to harvest the botrytis resulting from the thunderstorms of August 15," she told me. "The second and third passeage were organized quickly, as the climatic conditions were becoming unfavorable. The teams were ready to harvest within the hour, as soon as a weather window emerged. This second phase of harvest finally took place on September 23 before a thunderstorm that resulted in a cumulative rainfall of ...

98 points Decanter: "Befitting a glorious Sauternes vintage, the 2007 Yquem stood out in this tasting like a beacon. Sandrine Garbay notes that it was ‘a great year for noble rot and feels that, like 2001, 2007 is a “classic” expression of Yquem.’ Burnished hue in the glass, remarkably powerful and concentrated with endless layers of flavour. Aged in oak for 2.5 years, remarkably this could still benefit from further ageing and integration of oak. Despite the power and weight, the wine remains fresh and vibrant with driving acidity. Should improve for a ...

It has oyster shell, crushed stone and citrus peel character with racy acidity coming through, adding to its length and tension. Very long and firm at the end with a backbone of fine tannins for a white. 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon. 92 points Int'l Wine Cellar: "Captivating, tangy aromas of vineyard peach, pear, white flowers and curry powder. Supple and very concentrated; thick but lively thanks to perfectly integrated acidity. Fruit notes nicely complemented by spice tones. Conveys a tactile impression of extract. Long and strong on the back end. Still quite youthfully unevolved and built for long life. Long, with a vanilla-coconut tart finish. What a wine, voluptuous, sexy, and luscious. " (12/2011) 97 points Wine Spectator: "Squarely on the tropical side of the spectrum, with mango, papaya and pineapple fruit laced with a marmalade note. (03/2008) 91 points Wine & Spirits: "Scents of blood orange hint at the acidity that drives this wine; it moderates the proportions of the broad, rich flavor and finishes clean. (RV)" 94-95 points James Suckling: "Apricots, honeysuckle, lemons, mango crumble, earl grey and vanilla beans on the nose. Pretty spice notes that keep going, married with fresh zesty undertones. 97-99 points Jeb Dunnuck: "One of the finest Sauternes I've been lucky enough to taste in some time, the 2022 Château Suduiraut is 100% Sémillon that hit 13.9% natural alcohol, with 190 grams per liter of residual sugar. Still resting in 70% new barrels, this monster of a Sauternes offers a huge nose of honeyed citrus, orange marmalade, spice, brioche, and almond paste. Full-bodied, rich, and massively concentrated, nevertheless, it somehow stays flawlessly balanced, fresh, and light on its feet." (05/2023) 98-99 points James Suckling: "Wow. This is in...

" (04/2024) 94-96 points Vinous: "The 2023 Coutet has a tightly-wound bouquet that demands more coaxing than its peers.
