The legendary Probitas (Veritas in every other country) is finally upon us! This "extremely exciting" (a direct quote from K&L's spirit buyer) is a collaboration between the excellent Foursquare distillery in Barbados and the wonderful Hampden Estate in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica, where they are "rewriting the rules for rum." It begins with a base of molasses-based rum distilled expertly by Richard Seale on his famous Coffey still. These are mingled with two rare rums from Jamaica's most authentic distillery, are two "low-ester" rums from the OWH marque (O...

A combination of column and pot distillates Bounty Dark Rum packs a little more punch than it's golden brother. This blend of aged rums distilled from Coffey and pot stills was first bottled in 1999 to reflect the style of iconic St. Lucian rum. Notes from the producer: "Aged separately by batch and type of still in ex-Bourbon barrels, then blended and rested in oak vats for an additional six months. Average age of the blend is 5 years. Tasting Notes: Rich dark amber in color, typical pot still richness comes through the aromas carried by whiffs of cooked banana, caramelized fruits and spicy oak derived vanilla. A wellbalanced mid-palate provides structure around ...

For over 50 years the rum was sold only by draught, with local patrons bring in their own bottles to be filled. The rum continued to be sold exclusively out of the barrel until the First World War, when the company began filling champagne bottles rec...

The story from Mr. Ed Hamilton: "In the twenty years I lived on a yacht sailing the West Indies I really enjoyed drinking some great white rums. Back in the US, I missed that clean, fresh flavor of aged molasses-based rum that had been carbon-filtered to remove the color gained during a few years spent aging in oak barrels in the tropics. In addition to the fresh flavor of the rum there was also a slight coconut note generally attributed to the American oak barrels in which these rums were aged. Like so many things those rums that I enjoyed in the '90s a...

Bottled at 46% this is wonderfully smooth, rich, a touch funky, and astonishingly affordable. It's a slam dunk in your cocktail bar and a perfect summertime sipper on ice.
