Amrut 6 Year Old "K&L Exclusive" Ex-Oloroso Sherry Butt #3890 Unpeated Indian Barley Indian Single Malt Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
The award winning Amrut Distillery has been producing spirits in Bangalore since the 1940s, but it wasn't until 2004 that the Amrut Single Malt was properly launched. The main plant where Amrut is made was built in 1987 and eschews the use of automation and computerization in favor of hands on work. Production is very similar to Scottish single malt, save for the extreme climatic differences. The increased heat and humidity mean extremely fast maturation and high angel's share. For all that we love about the wonderful Amrut malts, our one complaint has b...

Amrut 8 Year Old "SCWC Exclusive" Ex-Port Pipe #4672 Unpeated Indian Barley Single Malt Barley (750ml)
Top Pick!
This unbelievable single cask was selected especially for the SoCal Whisky Club, but they've graciously allowed K&L to offer this exceptional barrel to our customers. The wonderful distillery in Bangalore has never before offered single casks in the US, so snagged this one at 8 full years of age was an absolute coop. 8 years in the heat in Bangalore is like 30+ in Scotland. This whisky, more so than even the Oloroso bottled exclusively for K&L, is reminiscent of the other great tropical malt producer, Kavalan. The sheer extraction that's been achieved, b...

Laphroaig 10 Year Old "Sherry Oak" Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
Laphroaig 10 is definitely in the running for Scotland's most iconic bottling. After years of pining for a sherried version - it's finally here. The 10 year Sherry Oak is finished in Oloroso casks providing a honeyed sweetness that perfectly compliments the salty smoke of Scotland's most richly flavored malt. While it's our hope that this will eventually be a staple on the shelves the initial release is extremely limited and will certainly sell out in minutes.

1998 Inchgower 22 Year Old "Sovereign" K&L Exclusive Single Sherry Butt Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
A Diageo blending workhorse, Inchgower is a principal component (along with Blair Athol) of the Bell’s blend which we sadly don’t see here in the United States. Due to a cloudy wort and a slightly unusual middle cut that runs from 70% all the way down to 55% in the spirits run, Inchgower tends towards the fuller spicier side of things and away from the high-toned fruits found early in the spirits run. Couple that with 22 years in a refill sherry butt and we’ve got a decadent spicy whisky on our hands with the mellowness of long aging. A wonderful combina...

2007 Glen Elgin 14 Year Old "Signatory K&L Exclusive" Hogshead Cask Strength Collection Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
While many distillery owners prefer shell-and-tube condensers because they are cheaper and easier to maintain, it is no secret that, for many great malts, a worm tub is critical to the final character. Glen Elgin is a classic worm tub distillery. Juicy fruit and palate weight are the major hallmarks of Glen Elgin, situated in Speyside's small hamlet of Fogwatt. The distillery has very long fermentation times (ranging from 80 to 120 hours) and an unusually clear wort. Combine that with very slow distillations and you have a vibrant fruity malt. Condense t...

1994 Tomatin 25 Year Old "Hunter Laing Old & Rare" Single Sherry Butt Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Top Pick!
Tomatin is a fascinating distillery with a unique history and many incarnations, from starting as a bulk blender and supplier and eventually shifting to a steadfast focus on quality single malt production. From the early 1900s through the mid '70s, Tomatin grew continuously. They added stills multiple times as demand for their product increased exponentially. By 1975, they were the largest single malt production facility in Scotland. Sadly due to market forces they never operated at their full capacity, and by the mid '80s the massive bust in the market ...

1988 Tormore 31 Year "Hunter Laing Old & Rare Heritage Platinum Selection" Single Sherry Butt Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Top Pick!
This lovely Oloroso Sherry butt from the Tormore Distillery was distilled in May of 1988 and bottled in 2019. A sister to the wonderful barrel we purchased last year, this time bottled in 700ml, it represents one of the best values in old, sherried malt available in Scotland today. The Tormore Distillery and its iconic copper roof is one of Speyside's newer distillers. Built in 1958, great care was taken with the design of the exterior, unlike at other distilleries of the period. The distillery was expanded in 1984 and can produce upward of 3.7 million l...

St. George "Baller" Single Malt Whiskey (750ml) (Previously $70) (Previously $70)
Top Pick!
Whisky Advocate: "Hugely floral and perfumed on the nose, with rose petals, violet candies, and dried orange peel. This is the Gewürztraminer of American single malts—sweet lychee, laced with sachet aromas that explode as if opening Grandma’s dresser drawer. The palate is more tropical; dried pineapple, canned peach syrup, and spice. This could be polarizing, but it’s utterly captivating and worth a try. (JL, Fall 2017)" K&L Notes: St. George's new single malt release is described by Master Distiller Lance Winters as a California take on Japanese Malt. ...

1988 Ardmore 31 Year "Hunter Laing Old & Rare Heritage Platinum Selection" Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Top Pick!
Only 60 bottles will be available of this intriguing, old Highland peater. Distilled in April 1998 and bottled in 2019 at 50.2% ABV without dilution or chill filtration, the Platinum Selection represents the very best of what Hunter Laing has to offer. These casks are the bottler's finest stocks and are selected not only for their exquisite rarity but also their unbelievable quality. Built in 1898 by William Teacher, the Ardmore Distillery is one of the Highlands' best kept secrets, offering only an extremely limited selection bottled by the distillery, ...

2000 Scapa 20 Year Old "Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseur's Choice" K&L Exclusive Cask #1098 Single Refill Sherry Hogshead Nonchillfiltered Cask Strength Orkney Island Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
Distilled May 2nd, 2000 and bottled on November 30th, 2020 at 56.2% ABV. Scapa is Orkney's "other distillery," sitting just half a mile south of its famous neighbor, but it deserves to be recognized in its own right as one of Scotland's great malts. An unusual still setup, water source, and island environs lend Scapa its unique character. The wash still is a Lomond still—one of only a handful of functional Lomond stills in Scotland. The spirit still is a more traditional onion bulb still. Unpeated and laden with Scapa's signature honey flavors, this choi...

Macallan 12 Year Old "Double Cask" Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Sip or mix this single malt, aged in American and European ex-sherry barrels. Mellow honey and smooth, nutty flavors taper off into a long fade that shows vanilla, citrus, sweet spices and a hint of cocoa. (KN)" (12/2017) 90 points Whisky Advocate: "Two oaks are better than one in this single malt, which marries whiskies matured in sherry-seasoned casks of both American and European oak. The sherry imparts aromas of raisins, figs, hazelnuts, blanched almonds, candied orange peel, and leather. A backbone of vanilla sweetness ...

2002 Linkwood 18 Year Old "Hepburn's Choice" K&L Exclusive Single Hogshead Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
The splendid Linkwood Distillery is truly the unsung hero of the Diageo portfolio. While we wonder desperately why they won't bother to sell it regularly as a single malt, we're constantly reminded that the core blends represent the vast majority of their profits and this is such a crucial element in those products that risking their integrity by marketing a single malt version is not good business. We luckily have access to the occasional barrel from our sources in Scotland and we rarely say no to Linkwood. The distillery was founded in 1821, but didn't...

Highland Park "Cask Strength" Release #2 Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
The always impressive Highland Park is one of Scotland's most reliable malts. The often awarded distillery is a favorite of many, yet has remained slightly in the shadows. One of the few things that the distillery lacked, despite countless unique and collectible bottlings, was a regular cask strength expression. Thankfully, someone was convinced that the quality level was a solid addition to the already excellent regular line up and even more impressively they've decided to offer small batch releases, so each time they bottle we'll get a different window...

Macallan "Edition No. 6" Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
Macallan's annual Edition releases serve as a study in cask influence. Edition No. 6 is the final release in this series, a fitting culmination to an innovative yet traditional whisky project. Distiller's notes: "The sixth and final release in the The Macallan Edition series, Edition No. 6 takes its inspiration from the natural wonders of the legendary River Spey and The Macallan Estate, where each and every cask of The Macallan is matured before being hand-selected for use by our expert whisky makers. All of the five distinct casks types used to create ...

Macallan 25 Year Old "Distillery Bottling" Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
Whisky Advocate: "An intense candy treat of a whisky that announces itself with rose petal, honey and hard candy on the nose. On the palate this cycles through a number of candied notes-fruity for the most part, with cherry character, but including butterscotch and a slight pine forest flavor. The long finish serves as another tour of the palate, with a nutty element. Sherry casks." (02/2011) K&L Notes: Extremely limited! Macallan's 25-year-old sherry casks are a modern classic. From the distillery: "The Macallan Sherry Oak 25 years old forms part of o...

2010 Glentauchers 10 Year Old "Sovereign" K&L Exclusive Single Wine Barrel Finished Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
Glentauchers has a long history as an integral component in many famous blends. First created to supply malt for Buchanans it developed into a key part of Teachers, and finally today it’s a workhorse for Ballantines. The sad result is we rarely have a chance to appreciate the malt on its own. This 10 year wine cask finished example is pleasantly fruity with floral and honey top notes and a lovely red fruit basket complexity from the cask. A superb daily drinker for those who appreciate having something fun and different around.

1992 Glentauchers 28 Year Old "Hart Brothers Finest Collection" Cask Strength Single Barrel Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)
Top Pick!
The Hart family have been licensed victuallers and publicans in Paisley on the outskirts of Glasgow since the 18th Century, but it was in 1964 that brothers Iain & Donald Hart incorporated the company as Wine & Spirit Wholesalers and Scotch Whisky Blenders. Alistair Hart, who still selects casks for this special line today, came on as Chief Blender in 1975. His charge at the time was to secure and select the finest casks of single malt that were not readily available to the market. Their commitment to excellence is second to none in the industry and they...

2010 Linkwood 11 Year Old "Signatory K&L Exclusive" Charred Wine Hogshead Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
Linkwood has been the blender's greatest secret for decades. A little bit of Linkwood used correctly takes a fine blended Scotch and amps it up to a very good or great blended Scotch. It's like salt to a chef for the whisky blender and it's this unique characteristic that makes it so rare as a single malt - it's too valuable for the blend. Fortunately for fans of great Single Malt, the independent bottling market has stepped in to fill this void. We've seen more and more casks come to market in the last 5-10 years, but most of those single casks don't co...

Ardbeg "Uigeadail" Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $73) (Previously $73)
Top Pick!
94 points Whisky Advocate: "Launched in 2003, Uigeadail remains one of Ardbeg’s core offerings. Matured in a mix of sherry and bourbon barrels and bottled at cask strength. Peppery peat, warm tar, coffee grounds, machine oil, and black pepper on the nose. The palate is complex and rich, offering orange segments sprinkled with sea salt, dark chocolate, malt, and ever-present sweet peat. Nicely balanced. Lengthy in the finish, with smoky caramel. Balcones K&L Exclusive Cask Strength Single Barrel #16584 Texas Single Malt Whiskey (750ml)
Top Pick!
Clocking in at a monsterous 130.8 proof, this K&L Exclusive barrel from Balcones is also among their oldest bottlings. Aged for 4 long Texas years in new European oak it packs an extraordinary amount of flavor. The huge and rapid temperature swings common to Waco, TX have penetrated that new oak in a way that feels a lot like Kentucky bourbon, but it is the 100% Scottish Golden Promise single malt barley distilled on Balcones' Scottish Forsyth stills that make this barrel a truly unique specimen.

Starward "K&L Exclusive" Single Barrel Cask Strength Australian Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

The Starward whiskies are a distinct expression of place - Melbourne, Australia. In the world famous Barossa Valley, Starward leverages more than just local grain and brewers yeast for their whisky. All of their whiskies are first aged in red wine barrels from this epic wine growing region. The big bold flavors of Barossa are perfectly suited to creating big bold whiskies. The Malts Festival bottlings of Glen Scotia have been an enormous hit the last several years, and this exquisite bottling is sure to be no different. Sold out instantly from the Glen Scotia website, we don't expect our small allocation to last long here in California either. The whiskey is made up exclusively of Glen Scotia's unpeated runs from 2009-2011 and aged in first fill Bourbon casks before a 5-month finish in first fill Bordeaux red wine casks. Hombo Shuzo Mars Tsunuki "The First" Single Malt Japanese Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
Hombo Shuzo has quietly been revolutionizing their Single Malt offerings over the last several years. This is the first from their release from their new distillery at the southern tip of Kyushu. Located 50 kilometers south of Kagoshima, in the same town where Hombo Shuzo was born. The goal of the distillery was not to increase production, but to allow for diversity of spirit through experimentation in a new terroir. The new distillery is in a starkly different climate than Mars Shinshu in Nagano. Both have access to excellent quality water, but the Tsun...

1989 Tullibardine 31 Year "Hunter Laing Old & Rare" K&L Exclusive Single Sherry Butt Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
Tullibardine sits in Blackford not far north of the border between Highlands and Lowlands. Historically, it produced a nutty malt that was generally filled into tired casks and sold off for blending. Their lack of a strong wood management program meant that single casks were a crapshoot. If you managed to get a great one, you could have a phenomenal spirit. If the cask was past its prime, the whisky was nothing to write home about. In 1994, the distillery was shut down. It wasn’t until new ownership took over in 2003 that the distillery reopened and saw ...

2005 Lagavulin "Distiller's Edition 2020" Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
The yearly Distiller's Edition from this excellent Islay classic malt is one of the years most hotly anticipated releases. Not because it's necessarily collectible or rare, but just simply that so many people find it so consistantly delicious. It starts with well aged smokey malt from the famous south shore distillery. The oily and richly peated whisky is filled into fresh Pedro Ximinez sherry casks for an additional aging of about a year. Drawn from the cask and bottled at 86 proof, it couples the wild intensity of Islay peat with the robust sweetness o...

Ardbeg 19 Year "Traigh Bhan - 2021 Release" Batch #3 Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
95 points Whisky Advocate: "The early nose offers hand-rolled tobacco, ginger, black pepper, and fragrant woodsmoke. Medicinal notes, brine, and lemon develop in time. Sweet peat smoke, tropical fruits, toffee, and aniseed on the palate, with smoked haddock and a suggestion of tar. Iodine, black pepper, and sea salt in the lengthy finish. (GS)" (02/2020) 90 points Wine Enthusiast: "Named for Islay's Traigh Bhan beach, where the 'Singing Sands' hide jagged rocks beneath, this single malt is by turns velvety and rugged. Each sip opens with soft smoke and...

Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry Oak Cask Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Look for a rich butterscotch scent and a hint of fresh apricot. On the palate, this Sherry-matured single malt layers on concentrated caramel, butterscotch and custard, finishing long and spiced on a hint of orange peel. *Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Spirits 2017* (KN)" (12/2017) K&L Notes: In his book Kindred Spirits, international whisky authority Paul Pacult describes the Macallan 12 as "simply the best 12 year old single malt around". GlenAllachie 10 Year Old "Batch 05" Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
GlenAllachie's 10 Year Old Cask Strength is the only such bottling in their lineup. Bottled at 55.9% ABV, the nose shows a seductive honey quality with accents of cinnamon, nutmeg, citrus peel, and a nutty character from the PX and Oloroso Sherry cask aging. These features are echoed on the palate for a surprisingly soft and approachable cask strength dram.

2009 Daftmill "Summer Batch Release" Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
The new release of Daftmill's wonderful single estate Lowland Malt. Francis and Ian Cuthbert are making the most compelling malts in all of Scotland. They are the only operational farm distillery committed to using exclusively their own grown malt with whisky to sell (more distilleries in this mold are in the works, but still too young). They began production in 2005 but didn't get cranking until 2006. During the farm's quiet periods in the mid-summer and the winter they fire up the stills and make whisky from their own harvest. The purity and intensity ...

Ardbeg 10 Year Old Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

92 points Whisky Advocate: "Classic ‘southern shores’ Islay from the onset: salty and medicinal on the nose, with smoked haddock, citrus fruits, and milk chocolate. The palate yields full-on hot peat, pipe tobacco, black coffee, licorice, and more chocolate. The finish is long and malty, with sweet smoke. Non-chill filtered. (GS, Fall 2018)" K&L Notes: Still holding our super low price on this classic Islay whisky, which was named World Whisky of the Year by Jim Murray in his 2008 edition of the Whisky Bible, making it easier for you, too, to fall in lo...

Westward K&L Exclusive Single Barrel #277 Cask Strength Single Barrel American Single Malt Whiskey (750ml)
Top Pick!
Westward has long been producing some of the finest American single malts available due to a few very intentional choices and Scottish-like climate. We've selected one of their oldest available casks and it's a classic. Westward only uses Pacific Northwest grown barley and it's all malted just 10 miles from the distillery at Great Western Maltings. This two-row barley is malted to spec—high color pale malt—which would be something akin to a medium or medium + coffee roast. This brings out an array of beautiful toasted flavors ranging from filberts, almon...

2011 Port Charlotte "PAC:01" Pauillac Wine Cask Finished Cask Strength Heavily Peated Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "Look for a tawny hue and a distinctly coconut-driven aroma. Add water to tame the alcohol intensity and the reward is orange and dark chocolate flavors, with hints of chipotle, charred oak and saline. The finish is long, complex and delicious. It was aged eight years and finished in red wine casks from Bordeaux." 92 points Whisky Advocate: " This year’s edition of the Port Charlotte Cask Exploration Series was aged in French oak red wine casks from Bordeaux’s Pauillac region. Sweet peat on the nose, honey, sugared banana slic...

Balvenie 12 Year Old "The Sweet Toast of American Oak" Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
According to the producer, Balvenie's apprentice malt master Kelsey McKechnie had the idea to import virgin oak barrels from Kentucky. After a deep toasting at the Balvenie cooperage the barrels are filled with Balvenie that had aged in ex-bourbon barrels. Tasting notes: "Lusciously malty with some sweet fudge, followed by citrusy and oak vanilla aromas with layers of spicy oak notes of ginger and cinnamon. Aromas of candied orange and lemon peel, vanilla toffee and butterscotch, layers of blossom honey, some melted brown sugar and oak spices at the end....

Auchentoshan American Oak Single Malt Scotch Whisky (1L)
Top Pick!
Whisky Advocate: "American Oak is new to the Auchentoshan core range in 2014 and is the first release from this Lowland distillery to be matured solely in first-fill bourbon casks. An initial note of rosewater, then Madeira, vanilla, developing musky peaches, and icing sugar. Spicy fresh fruit on the palate, chili notes, and more Madeira and vanilla. The finish is medium in length, and spicy to the end. (GS, Winter 2014)"

1995 Glenburgie 25 Year Old "Signatory" Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
This is the second cask of Glenburgie we've grabbed from the Signatory warehouse and it's another winner. The whisky is nothing flashy or wildly exotic, just smooth, rich, and delicious from front to back. Glenburgie is known more for its role in Ballantine's blended than it is as a stand-alone single malt, but these single casks should help change that perception. Once again we've got creamy malt flavor on the palate, a rich layer of oak from the two decades in wood, and a lovely finish of baked apples and other Highland fruit flavors. The 57.1% ABV lif...

It’s powerful, with a thick, buttery feel and a long finish of lip-smacking spice cake and sea brine notes. (KN)" (12/2015) Whisky Advocate: "Somehow this 12 year old—a mix of sherry and American oak—is overlooked by malt lovers heading straight to the mental world of a’Bunadh. This is Aberlour at a crucial point in its growth: you’ve lost the maltiness of the 10 year old, but there’s n...

Hombo Shuzo Mars Shinshu Komagatake "Tsunuki Aging 2020 Release" Single Malt Japanese Whisky (750ml)
Top Pick!
The Tsunuki Aging malts are a compelling project by Mars, operator of the Shinshu and Tsunuki distilleries. The distilleries sit in very different climates and the whisky expresses its location of aging beautifully. Shinshu is Japan's highest distillery resting at 2,600 feet above sea level where Japan's Southern Alps meet the Central Alps in Southern Nagano. This bottling was distilled at Shinshu and aged at Tsunuki—the new distillery built in 2016 which sits at sea level in a very humid climate.

It has a golden hue and bold fresh apple and honey scent. The palate is light, fresh and lively, a core of custard and vanilla cookie is accented with lemon peel and ginger.
